nice, I really like those kinds of RPG back in the days hehe. Games such as FF3 for SuperNES, Zelda 1, those were classic games, Nice introduction of what the game is, and how the battles are like. I have heard of this game, (its for Sega Genesis right?) but never got to play it.

Sue me, but I always hated Japanese RPGs. Why? Well to me, a "role playing game" doesn't involve a 99.6% linear storyline where you can't even pick your friggin characters.
I loved the old AD&D Pool of Radience, Pool of Darkness, up until Baldur's Gate type of games. In fact, I almost bought Baldur's Gate and it's sequel at Dragonscroll, but I am waiting for Diablo II.
Don't get me wrong... the Final Fantasies are taking steps towards freeing the player, and the graphics kick, but I just like to have more control.
Anyway... to SuperGeneral, good work, if you are going to report on an unfamilier game, this is a good, explanatory way to do it. Fine job! |

YOU CAN'T EVEN VARY HIS WEAPON STYLE? This person has guns... this guy can only use axes... this lady heals and uses staves. I can just go watch a movie if I want my only freedom in a game to be... DIE? or follow their pattern and WIN. |

Are you planning on doing the whole game?!!?! That would be something...I played almost to the end (it was so long ago I can't even remember what part I was at but i remember that Phoenix was kicking some serious ass for me). This was, in my opinion, the best rpg for the "old-school" systems besides ff2/3 (4 or 6 for you japanese freaks) I can't decide which i liked better, I liked the story in 2/4 a bit better than 3/6 but the gameplay and the infinite uses of accesesories made 3/6 really fun to play(kefka did crack me up tho, i think he was the only character that made me laugh, out loud, at a video game) Great report!

I was looking through the other section and happened to stumble upon this. It was a great idea, would've been cool if more were done with it, I love Shining Force. I have the opposite opinion of YRM- I can't stand American rpgs because there is no character or storyline development, and all it really seems to be is just getting your character leveled up until you are strong enough to beat the game. (i.e. Diablo.)
With Japanese rpgs you get immersed into the entire affairs of fantasy worlds, and see real personality in the characters- to me Japanese rpgs are the most entertaining type of games, although they did used to be more like American rpgs back in the eighties and early nineties. 3/23/00 |

| Get all the old good stuff on roms. Breath of Fire 1 and 2 are good as is FF5 which you can get for playstation now. I don't know how good the translations are but you can get final fantasy 2 and 3 as well. I played these old roms for a while then went back to Starcraft. |
