So :P to you guys.

Nice job on the report, it's not often someone can make me sit through and read a whole report unless it's image heavy(I have a fairly short attention span). I like the little "post-it note" tips. Good idea.

Thanks, I got the post-it notes idea from the "Dummies Guide to..." things. Just out of curiousity, which came first: the "Dummies Guide" series or the "Complete Idiot's Guide"? Heh.

These "first-comment" things are getting kinda old :-b. I have a better challenge for you: Try to be the first person to comment, but with something actually USEFUL (i.e. related to the content in the BR, proving that you've read at least a few sentences of it :-) ) in your comment.

Another high quality production by Shock. If I remember correctly, about a year and a half ago you posted some sort of daily unit use strat on the S&T forum? I still remember the one about battle cruisers =]

Highly informative as always, and a close look at a meta game style strat. Great work Shock. 9!

Great report, informative and well organized. Just one question...what's with all of the "e.g."'s?
#29 shockwave[26058]
exchange1.sensable.com
I like using "e.g." in various situations, e.g. in instances where you're making broad sweeping tactical claims (e.g. when you're talking about late-game strats, (e.g. when I recommend using carriers as Toss (e.g. on island maps where they're most powerful, (e.g. like Dire straits)))) but want your audience to also be able to draw specific application (e.g. in the eg above, if you want to explain how to use carriers against e.g. marines), then you can use e.g.'s. But that's just an e.g.

Heh. Seriously, though, I've learned to communicate at various "levels of detail", this is great when you're e.g. (heh) trying to write about a project you're working on when you know that it'll be read both by fellow technicians as well as your supervisary and marketting staff. The reason Dummy's and Idiot's guides have been successful is because they explain things very broadly so simple people can understand, but also use specific instances and technical jargon that is easily dileneated but are useful to geeks like me who might also be reading.

So in summary, using examples is an easy way to talk at different levels of details (so are the captions that appear in the BR; you can pretty much ignore them and still get a sense of the flow of the BR).

Heh, now you know why people RARELY come up to me and say, "Hey Shock, I have a simple question..." ;-).

#30 Fractal_Wave[26059]
24.65.24.97.bc.wave.home.com
Hey, Shock, I have a simple question...a few, actually.

When are we gonna play again?! Wave Family Reunion Round 2!!

More importantly, why is it so key to pop a Zerg's hive? In late-game FFA, you can assume that he already has his Greater Spire, Defiler Mound, Ultra Den, and Nydus's out the bum. The Hive is just window dressing....Kill any Nydus, then Spire, then Mound, then Den...then you can pop the hive, then the Queen's nest....ect, back on down.

Although, if you hit a Zerg base with 12 BC's, 6 SV's and a dropship-o-fun, the zerg might as well lie down and die....

All the best,

hey shock, very informative and stuff :)

one question tho: why do spore colonies 6 damage to 0/3 BCs? dont they do normal damage? if so it should be 9 (15-3-3)

exchange1.sensable.com
Hey FW, I'm happy to play you anytime. You can usually find me on really late at night, although I'm more a fan of 2on2's these days. Last competitive 1on1 I played, I got called "cheap" (which is true) because I had to resort to carriers to win the game, that's how low I've sunk :-b.

About taking out hive, the nice part is that it automatically prevents him from rebuilding his structs. If I take out his mound, he'll just build another. I'll take out the hive if I have a chance, then work on the other structs afterward. But yeah, just yamato-ing the hive and then not following up isn't too sound (although it's demoralizing), in that case just yamato the greater spire and get outta there :-).

#35 shockwave[26064]
exchange1.sensable.com
Hey Necro,
Well, if you take into account rate of fire with spores as opposed to other defensive structures, as well as cost-performance analysis, you'll find that a simple damage-armor approach does not accurately capture the actual damage that a spore does to a BC.

Or maybe they actually do 9 against 0/3 BC's but I can't subtract right :-b. Man, I should get a 5 on the report just for that...

Hehehe, Ronin(the one with the ~) and I played a long series of late night public 2v2s last week and this was our main strat when we drew terran, credit to ~ of course. The only difference is we usually skipped the early attack units, tanks, and bunkers and just went straight up for BCs. You only really need to start making marines if your attacked and that doesn't happen to often in pubbies I guess.

seriously, when using this strat you need very good recon. the limiting factor is usually gas, which leaves you with alot of minerals. what i like to do [if i give a sh@t about thegame] is to turret up the islands like crazy, this costs no supply and only minerals leaving you open for upgrades and BC's. aside from that this strat does work in 2v2 if your partner can stay alive for more than 3 minutes, luv ya whoop

I feel as though this was written just for me. No details were spared, even the most basic, so that a moron like me can learn something. But the problem is, I won't learn anything. If I ever get around to transferring my files from my old computer, I might start playing SC online, but I'll suck it up big time. I'll know to build the CCs I want to float close to the expansions, but I won't. Probably because I'll be too busy watching my SCVs harvest to do anything. But hey, it was a good read :)

Very good report there (bah, saying that isn't so wonderful after it's been repeated 45 times :( )

One thing that bugged me was the idea of winning an ffa. Basicly, you need to stay back, become an econ hog, then, as shock put it, use your FoG.

Now, that is a good way to win, but how fun would an ffa be if all of the players took that route? The action would never happen till late game and it would look like the first 2 minutes of bunker command; the first people to go hunting for players to kill being the first to die by someone who lurked by them (luckily, afterward, everyone is too disjointed to do anything that sneaky, so the play gets hectic). Suddenly I see why people no longer like FFAs, and why Mark4 made the 'revenge, not winning' quote.

Oh well, as long as people don't know the way to win in ffas, there will always be action in it :).

Hmm, btw, I wonder if it is possible to 4 pool in a 6 way ffa and WIN it :P

BC and Vessels is good combo but truly the ultimate combo is BC/Vessel/Tanks Just have 4 drop ships 1 with scvs and 3 with tanks. Tanks just take down bases soooo fast while the BC absorb the damage.

Hehehehehe, don't play w/ me on a 3 way FFA shock. I just did a one helluva bad ass move here in a LAN game.

I duked it out with another protoss (i being protoss as well) until i wiped his main clear. Suddenly the terran cruisers arrived, knowing that my single carrier and few goons and reavers can't possibly scratch 'em. I immediately surrendered :))

The terran won, but damn no fun on his part :P

Its like i've played a 1on1 all through out, and as for the terran player it was like "sim city" for him.

Fantastic report! You've really shown how important effort on the writing, instead of images, can make an entertaining, enjoyable, and top-rated report! I'm always impressed by BR writers who take the time to make the writing as polished as the images. (Although YRM/fancy image reports still rule too =] ). What sucks is fancy images, with typos and no text detail - those BR's should have stayed in the draft phase.

Keep writing, I look forward to more of your reports!

Good idea on the CC floating. I'm wondering how you manage to save 800 minerals without someone wiping you out? Once you have the islands secured, do you use hotkeys for each base? I'm fairly new at this game and have trouble keeping up with everything that is going on. I find it difficult to keep up with one base let alone three at once.
#57 shockwave[26173]
exchange1.sensable.com
Cracykirk: You save up 800 because it's a FFA and you take the risk that nobody will attack you early; or in a 2on2, you hope they'll attack your partner. Seriously, though, remember that bunker defenses in early game are super super cost effective, so most people will not attack you once they see you have a sealed in bunker: not in a 2on2, not on a FFA. Also, CC's give 10 supply each, so you can forgo supply depots and that saves you 100/0 per CC.
Yep, I hotkey all my CCs. I queue up a ton of SCVs for each. Whenever I get the "SCV good to go" msg, I hit SPACE and assign the SCV to mining, this ensures that I can manage all 3 bases efficiently.
#58 CrayzKirk[26316]
207.247.141.239
Shockwave: Thanks for the info. Actually, since I've been reading these reports, my play has gotten much better. I like to random since it will make me a more rounded player. I usually go 2nd Hatch before pool in 2v2 since the people I play with love to play turtling terrans! I basically never scout them since they always do the same thing. This does lead to bad habits against others players. Is there a good quick expansion with protoss? I always seem to have trouble getting them going quickly enough. It is hard to build a wall of buildings as a defensive encampment. Should I get a forge, build a pylon, a battery and a couple of cannons at my choke? Getting to be the first one to the supply limit seems like an almost guaranteed victory. I do have problems with Zerg in BroodWar; Terran Goliaths have the same range and the bunker, tank, turret, sci-ves makes it tough to get a defiler in to plague/dark swarm. I guess I'm a bit off subject here, oh well... worth a shot to get better so I can wipe out my friends... Thanks again!!
#59 CrayzKirk[26319]
207.247.141.239
Oops... Left out the Guardian part... I mean Goliaths have the same range as Guardians, maybe I need a few queens in the mix to broodling the Goliaths and Tanks before the plague/swarm. Read something else about attacking that makes sense; air units go full speed to up to attack range, they do obey laws of physics and coast a bit before stopping. Now I know why my queens get too close or Guards die to turrets...
#60 Raistloaf[26322]
ti11a61-0159.dialup.online.no
Interesting read.

But do you really think protoss is most cost effective in a FFA ?

I think that terran are the best, especially when resources are tight. Medics and repairing SCV's is the reason, not to mention bunkers.

Protoss have lots of advantages, like shield batteries/regeneration, but they are not nearly as moveable as the terran "healers".

Well, thats just my humle opinion.

Anyway, a really strategic and good report =]
#61 shockwave[26384]
h00a024cc6600.ne.mediaone.net
Raistlof: I think it all boils down to a matter of preference. I can tell you advantages of Toss in FFAs, but there are undoubtedly unique benefits from each race. This kind of extended discussion might be best handled in a forum so we can keep it ongoing. But in any case, one of the big Terran weaknesses is in supply. You need supply just to build your static ground D (bunkers), whereas you can just plop down tons of photons if you have spare mins in late game Toss FFAs (which you inevitably have).

yep, "The report was great!!" :)

as to Barage.. his comment on FFA's is true in all but one instance.. when each and every player goes after the one to his right or the like.. funniest game I have ever seen is when 4 people who built up all game pulled the FoG against different people so every persons main base and tech was destroyed :) just think about that for a bit.. 4 huge armies, billions of lil bases with basic starting game tech and the hope you dont get found and eliminated..
