Not as easy a game to follow... but the colored pictures were nice. Were the pictures always in line with the text?

The pictures are accurate... But the best way to enjoy a chess report is actually to play the game on a chessboard. I understand people in here won't make the effort to do it, that's why I put a lot of pics. Maybe I should have drawn arrows on the pics to help, or something like this.

Nice report! I was able to follow the entire match and enjoyed your commentary! Keep it up!

Wow. The white player gave up everything and still pulled it out. If this was SC I would call it pure new school =]

Hehe, I like chess, but I think Internet Chess takes the real fun of it away. It's much nicer when you can truly interact with the board itself and looks from all angles.

Wow PHEBen, each game you report gives me more insight into the game. Another excellent game that I very much enjoyed reading about.

I liked the point you made of black having a huge material advantage and being unable to capitlize on it because of white positioning his pieces to attack while at the same time threatening black so that black couldn't develop a counter until it was too late. To make another SC parallel, it kind of shows the importance in SC AND chess of continually putting pressure on your opponent so that he's so busy defending that he doesn't have time to counter.

I also liked the comparison you made between this game and the tank push / hydra drop. White's strategy was very much like a tank push. He slowly pushed his way forward and black didn't have the pieces or the positioning to take him out, so he did an end around trying to take him out from the rear.

Excellent analyzing of the game and Excellent report. Keep up the good work.

Cheers,
Dref

BTW, when I said this wasn't as easy a game to follow, I meant as easy as the first chess report, not comparing chess to SC =).

Never bet against Anderssen. (except when he played Morphy) As a relatively good chess player and relatively bad SC player, I keep trying to come up with crossover tactics which will help me improve, but right now it seems to me that the two games are just too dissimilar. Maybe I'm not playing hypermodern enough....

Well, I have to say that i absolutely LOVED this report =) It was easy to follow (esp. for such an advanced game) The pictures were clean, appropriate, and helpful and you described it perfectly. Chess is one of my favorite games, and its very difficult to realize that chess isn't just a game of "taking pieces." I have never seen such excellent positioning or someone come back from such a disproportionate material advantage (as you pointed out) Man what I'd give to be able to think like that... =)
Keep the reports coming!
Ciao!

I know how cool getting nice replies feels, so:

I logged onto BR.com today expecting to see a few new reports, hopefully a couple would be good so I'd be able to feed my strategy addiction just that little bit more... I saw your name on the new reports section and hoped like hell you'd written another chess report. Thanks, these rock so much!

The thing that makes these reports great is your reporting style: short, informative and to the point, but you also analyse the strategy behind various moves which adds that extra something special.

I don't know if arrows on the chessboard would help, maybe an animated gif would do the trick... Besides, if you read the moves before the image, you get an exact feel for what's going on.

Please write some more, I love reading them!

P.S. I tried out some of the concepts from the last game you reported at my local skatepark (Skatepark?! Yeh, we play chess there... You try skating in 38 degree (C) heat! Someone brought a chess set along and the rest is history...) and I didn't lose once.

Ow, this game's really awesome. I didn't see that checkmate come, truely. I always thought that 2 knights and a bishop vs 2 knights, a bishop, TWO ROOKS AND A QUEEN !! was a bad-thing™.
"Both white rooks are threatened now (...)Anderssen doesn't care", huhu i love this one ^_^
Keep on reporting PHben !

yes, arrows would help, but remember.

plz plz plz plz! put an image for each and every move, and make sure you color code the movement codes so it shows whos turn it is. BTW, i will next time play it out on my own board.

Thanks for the comments guys ! I'll keep the reports coming.
General : if you play the game on a chessboard you don't need any pictures, because I wrote down the moves.

Hey Pheben,
I came to BR to read SC reports, and after reading the title I still
wasn't expecting to see an actual chess game. More like some
SC game which exhibited some chess characteristics or
comparisons... and was massively impressed by this report!
Haven't played chess for ages but used to be somewhat of a
regional school champ (embarrassing but true). I'm still not sure
how a chess report finds its way into the list of SC reports but
I definitely didn't mind this little surprise. What an impressive game,
the clear thinking that went into it from Anderssen blows your mind.
Ciao,
'System
