That report was quite querolous. THe information was uneeded and he tried to make the report more voluminous by using excessive unneeded pics. Basically im saying he should have put some meaning into the report so be extra harsh to him when you write a comment.

Often times, people create rumors to spread about other people simply to degrade that person or decrease their popularity. These rumors are often created to hurt someones feelings, but this is not the case. I feel truly honored that you have pitted me up one of the most powerful immobile offensive contraptions in this game, and have given the world a true testament of my utter power. Not only can we take down structures that hurly plasma grenades at our very being, but we can also extract minerals to create powerful new units, thank you.

actually, sometimes I just toy with the computer after I've won the game by killing him off w. my drones and just drones... so don't knock this BR (actually, I don't think it even was much of a battle)
but seriously... the only thing that could have been worse is perhaps:
'me and my brother were playing $$$PHAT CASH$$$ Blood Bath and we promised not to fight w. each other for 1/2 hour...
then I broke out of my 8 bunker, 23 siege tank defense with 24 D-matrixed Battlecruisers...
he had 24 scouts and 12 carriers with a few arbiters though and I couldn't see his guys so I lost :(' |

THOSE SCVS KICKED SOME SERIOUS ASS!!
The cannons only killed a meager 184/200 scvs. Although next time you should face 25 carriers vs 200 Scvs, the outcome is very breathtaking. BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW SCVS>ALL.

The Iraqi troops never really had a numbers advantage, weren't particularly screaming, were on terrain unsuitable to such an attack, and their military was not organized around a mass concept.
Now take the Iran-Iraq war, and you can go either way. |

Allow me to explain the principle of maneuver warfare.
Maneuver warfare is based upon the deployment of well trained, well motivated infantry (and neccessary support units) to doggedly strike the enemies weaknesses regardless of weather, hour, or terrain. Maneuver warfare means you don't sent in a battalion unless the battalion 50 kilometers north of you is gonna keep reinforcements from crawling all over your ass. Maneuver warfare means you get in, do the job, then get out without dickin' around.
Maneuver warfare is military doctrine in Western (or Western influenced) nations. The truth is that Canadian/British/Israeli/American infantryman will easily handle up to 3x their number in WW2 era trained troops (i.e. the Russians, Chinese, Iraqis, etc.). We're better trained, better equipped, and within 200 yards, we're money. Our ammunition is also 1/2 as light, so we can bomb twice as often (disabling the enemy twice as often) as some troop carrying an AK-47 whose ammo weighs a friggin' ton. We also employ proper fireteam movement, so we don't get shot as often.
Please quote where you acquired your "Law of Light Infantry". I'd really like to know.

I didn't say the Law of Light Infantry was the smart way of doing things, did I? In fact, it's about the dumbest way there is. That was sort of my point--you can kill anything (or at least anything on the ground) if you charge it with enough SCVs at once. It doesn't really prove anything about the studliness of the SCV to say that it can take out photon cannons.
The phrase was something that came out of my days playing Warlords (Warlords I), way back when. The weakest unit in the game was Light Infantry, and the Law of Light Infantry was what my friends and I used to describe an attempt to overwhelm an enemy through sheer numbers.
What you refer to as maneuver warfare is standard practice in strategy games like Starcraft just as much as it is in real war, and I use it all the time--I'd never win a game otherwise. Mutalisk raiding is a perfect example. Dart in with the mutas, slaughter the workers, and fly out before the enemy can bring troops in to hit back. |

Light Infantry ALONE cannot take a well fortified position.
They require artillery support, aerial reconnassaince, armoured support, etc. Given that the world's population is finite, as is the number of infantrymen, it is absolutely possible to create an obstacle using impassable terrain, layered artillery fire, biological weapons, minefields, machinegun fire, mustard gas, etc., which would be impossible for any number of infantryman to overcome. Your Law as you stated it seems more like a "law of physical saturation" as it could be applied to any actual material like, say, dog shit. Throw enough dog shit on the objective and it will be yours, and not an actual law concerning Light Infantry. |
| #43 AnOnymOu5[37236] |
| ABD2A6E9.ipt.aol.com |
About the "Law of Light Infantry":
You could throw a million soldiers with assault rifles (light infantry) at an Abrams tank, and as long as the Abrams had ammo for it's machine guns or even fuel to run the light infantry over it would be impervious. And as far as I know, the light infantry wouldn't be able to open up the tank once it had run out of fuel/ammo, they'd have to starve the tank crew out.
Now, saturation tactics do work, but it requires more than just light infantry. Current Chinese military doctrine counts on overwhelming numbers to meet an objective. They would gladly sacrifice twenty Mig 21s to down a single F-22, saturation only works however, if the weapon you satruate is capable of killing the target (light infantry cannot kill many things, and are more useful for tactical strikes on vunerable positions).
Soviet cold war doctrine called for having a 5-1 troop ratio with Western forces before any invasion could be mounted. Simulations said that the Ah-1 Cobra Attack Helicopter would kill 13 tanks before being shot down (very cost effective), one of the main reasons there was no attempted invasion of Western Europe, the Soviets couldn't keep the numbers they needed for victory (because of flaws in Communist industry, but that is a different debate).

I think Casper has the general idea here. Dog shit is, after all, the quintessential crap unit. :)
The "Law of Light Infantry" is partly a joke, and, as I said in my earlier post, the name was inspired by a game and not by actual, real-world light infantry. I suppose it should be amended to say, "Throw enough crap units capable of scratching the target at something and it will die." It doesn't have quite the same feel to it, though.
I was certainly not proposing this as any sort of realistic military doctrine, though, as Anon points out, saturation tactics do work if you have the numbers and at least some attack capability.
And light infantry can take down a tank, though it may take millions. If nothing else, they run it out of ammo and fuel, then dig a big hole, bury the thing, and let the crew suffocate. Silly? Yes. Ridiculous? Yes. Nothing any military commander in his right mind would ever contemplate for a minute? Yes. But, given that I'm commenting on a report about 400 SCVs attacking 19 photon cannons, ridiculousness is sort of inevitable. |

| moola.tcom.purdue.edu |
Please note that I heroically refrained from putting in my two cents about Communist (or, properly speaking, socialist totalitarian) economy and the Cold War. This debate is long enough without that... though, I must say, it's amazing how many well-informed, detailed, and interesting responses you can get by saying something silly. Maybe I should invent a "Law of Soviet Economy" and see what Starcraft-playing economics professors I can scare up.
Law of Soviet Economy: Put enough workers on a job and it will get done badly.
