Many of you will probably have been groaning in despaired resignation when you saw my name flash up on the 'last ten reporters' list. I am ashamed to admit that I have been foolish enough to have garnered myself the reputation as a self-righteous 'flamer' in my previous reports. However, I swear that if anyone disagrees with my report, I will not launch abuse at them, and if this report receives a poor rating I will not pout and drown the forum in threads about the "injustice" of the mark. In my last reports I have acted in a juvenile and immature manner, and I deeply apologise for the slurs I have tarred other with- I've grown from that miserable and ignominous station now, and I hope that I can be accepted again.

I also admit there to be one flaw in my report- some of the alttexts for the pictures are too long to read in one view, and it can become awkward to continually having to place the mouse over the image several times to peruse it. However, I felt that if I placed the comments in the main body of the text itself, they would detract too far from the object of the report. Apologies if it's caused anyone an annoyance...

On the contrary, seeing your name in the report list made me WANT to click it, since I liked your earlier reports. It's past midnight now when I saw this so I'll read it tomorrow, but it looks good and I think the "theme" is nice too. I like reading about the world wars. I could write a report about the Battle of Britain maybe, I've read tons about it and done two school papers on it...kek.

Pics did't load. The alt-text destroys the format of your report. You have to either fix the pic links or put the alt-text into regular text. I'm using 1024 x 768 and the report is 3.3 screens wide. Just too inconvenient too read.

wow, THAT was a good report. And i didn't have troubles at all with the pics or the table outline. During the load time the table was about 2 screens wide, but that settled when everything was loaded.

| I'm using 1024*768 too, and it shows up just fine. Your problem is that the report hasn't finnished loading or doesn't load as it should in your browser. Try refreshing or something. It's not an error in the report itself, it client side :) |

The report looks good, only read bits and pieces, alt-text, and looked at pics.
But for those that don't know, for long alt-texts like in this BR, just drag the mouse slowly along the picture and the alt-text never goes away, unless you move off the pic.
ill read the whole thing next time im online and sober, at the same time. (I'm thinking 2 months from now)

This was very informative, and contained interesting and plausible analysis. I enjoyed it. The pictures added a lot too, and I really liked the home front angle--the attention to government spin control, recruitment posters, and the impact on Germany of having to begin conscription. The one thing about the report I didn't like was that the writing style is quite overdone. Your attempts at vivid prose, in most cases, just made it awkward, and there were many instances where you used words incorrectly. If you plan to write more on history, a simpler, less affected writing style would be a big improvement.
I should probably add that I've taught college-level history and composition classes, and am working on the dissertation for a PhD in a related field. Hopefully this gives my comments some credence. :)

I agree with the above poster; while I enjoyed reading it, it often felt as if you wrote with a thesaurus beside you. It just makes things harder to read, especially when you do use some words that don't seem to make perfect sense, or the sense would be better achieved with simpler words. Too many mixed metaphors as well.
Great detail though, I enjoyed it. |

I thought some of the metaphors and description leaned towards the corny side, but otherwise I thought this was a great article.
I also thought the attempt at the end to find any kind of rectification in such a stupendously stupid display of militant nationalism was weak at best...but considering the battle you had to work with you did alright. |

Good thing I scrolled down the news section to see that bit about a new and different kind of report.
Very well written and nice job with all those supporting images and alt text. I am very sure you spent a lot of time writing this and for the fact that you were trying to analyze whether this battle was a good thing or not. Instead of just reporting the event. The reading flowed pretty well and I didn't seem to see any mistakes in my first read.
Another 2 non SC reports I remember reading that was very good here, was the Chess one and the paintball reports. Forgot who wrote them :P |

However the only thing I can think of that was bad was that especially in the beginning section, you used too much metaphors. Although it was nice, sometimes if you read about military history, the best writers seemed to make it more interesting to read when they just report it as is rather then putting too much Ernest Hemingway in their book. Anyways for myself, I think it is just a little easier of a read if I don't have to dissect through all those metaphors to get to what you are trying to say. But I am not trying to critize strongly on this report, I though it was a very good read and I was able to read the whole thing without falling asleep :))
Critics can sometimes be truly nasty here :)) but that is what BR.com is all about (kind of like the audience of Apollo). Good thing there were more people who were able to appreciate this kind of report.

Some miner points however:
1st JULY not June
No 'Civilian Towns' in No Mans Land - some villages, farms, woods and a windmill had been fortified by the Germans. Have you been?
Razorwire wasn't invented then. It was good old-fashioned barbed wire.
The British detonated 9 mines at 7.20 am. A tenth, the ona at Kasino Point, failed to go off on time. It was then detonated at 7.32, right underneath advancing British troops.

The orders for not running over no-mans land came from Rawlinson, Haig suggested that this was a bad idea but could be citicised for not exercising his authority and insisting that the men be allowed to charge. On the French sector where German positions were rushed, some good gains were made with fewer casualties. The actual order was that the men should advance in open formation at a pace of 100 yards every two minutes, about 2 miles per hour. They should carry there rifles 'at the port' and not stop to help wounded colleagues. Nice!

Hey, I hate to break it to all of you people who probably spent a great deal of time looking for all of these pictures but the picture with the soldiers going acrooss the barbed wire is fake. It was made during the re-enchament of the Battle of the Somme shot by filmakers and allowed by the British Government because they wanted to have some "patriotic images" to show the British public in order to boost morale for the war.
For that matter, most of the films in World War One that showed the actual battle taking place instead of the men in the trenches are also fake....

| Check out some of your Somme photos. One of them is a fake set up for the 1916 War office film, 'The Battle of the Somme'. It is the photo showing British troops running ahead of a fallen comrade on the barbed wire. The Imperial War Museum have long publicised this fact. Interesting site. keep it up. |
