I agree with mark, I'm sure this will happen, or at least be attempted. I've read so many tom clancy books that I'm now paranoid about terrorisim. This kinda got me thinkin about The Sum of All Fears and how those terrorists get hold of a nuke. I'm scared now, thx.
P.S. you got me dreaming of SC2 now as well. my friend said that when he went to buy brood war about a month ago, the guy at the counter told him its official that there's gonna be a sc2. is this true? or would i have heard this on the forum? |

China doesn't sell thousands of pounds of Heavy Water every year just for medicinal use. Nuclear components are not purchased to sit on a shelf, they are purchased to be used to manufacture nuclear weapons, its as simple as that.
The thing is, a nuclear war is winnable. It would take a SUBSTANTIAL amount of war to "destroy" the earth. Its been estimated that Russia is capable of launching 300 Megatons at us. I'm pretty sure we're under a "Mutual destruction" policy right now where we'd launch back another 300 Megatons, given our silos were functional. Mark, have you guys gotten any new field manuals lately, talking about reacting to this kind of stuff, given our new circumstances? |

But I'm sure I've not been privvy to all the information. : ) |

Call me cynical, but I think, although it would be unthinkable in December 2005, the whole incident would just be lodged in memory in 2055. 100 years later, people might not even know about it. I suspect the same thing will happen with Sept11.
Here's an example: In 1871, there was a fire in Chicago. A big fire. 100,000s went homeless, 200-300 were killed, some 2000000 dollars were lost. People adapted. You don't hear people going around mourning every October 8th. |

Another example: Black death wiped out somewhere around 1/3 of Europe's population. You know about it, sure, but do you think about it everyday? Are you constantly depressed thinking about the terrible number of people that died of the plague? People adapt.
Humans adapt. As much as you and I may feel that it would be right to go about thinking about Sept11 always, it's not going to happen. This is what bugs me about the news media. They're constantly searching for stories, coming up with headlines about how Sept11 was actually losing its grip on the populace (imagine that, people are acting like people again, never would've guessed) and such. Meanwhile, by constantly displaying images of the attacks on TV, they are inflaming the condition those who got PTSD from the attacks, and desensitizing others to the tragedy.

Mr Mediocre, 300 Megatons is nothing. The USA has 10,000 nuclear warheads right now, Russia has 9000.
A single Russian nuclear missile of the SS 11 class, I believe, carries a 20 megaton warhead. Their other missiles carry multiple warheads, as do all current US missiles ( which are substancially more sophisticated and far less likely to be downed by any anti ballistic missile system ). In the event of a nuclear war, we'd win if we struck first with complete operational secrecy, given the ability of our stealth bombers to penetrate their territory and launch nukes at their silos before they even knew what was going on. Then there'd still be the remaining nuclear silos and whatever submarine launched missiles they can muster ( which are a far cry from our submarine fleet, given the fact that they never really were able to perfect this technology ). With unimaginable loss, we would win.
The question is, who would want to win such a war. |
| #30 |]agomar[112456] |
| StCatherines-ppp109228.sympatico.ca |
| BTW, future nuclear terrorist strikes would probably occur in the manner of carry a nuclear bomb in a van or something, parking it in the middle of a city, and setting it off. Who needs a missile anymore. |

| Dag, it only takes 500 Megatons, detonated above the surface, to create enough fallout and debris to send us into a short nuclear winter. I would venture to guess that 1000's upon 1000's of megatons would most definitely kill every living thing on the planet. |

I think the "500 megatons causing a nuclear winter" is true only with a very generous definition of nuclear winter (ie the average temperature of the earth drops a couple degrees, which is definitely bad I agree). But it wouldn't wipe out all life or even all human life.
I think a typical estimate for energy from the asteroid impact that killed the dinosaurs is 100 million megatons, tens of thousands of times more energy than the entire human nuclear arsenal put together. And that impact didn't destroy all life.
Don't worry, the cockroaches will always survive. :-) |

NotDefault, the difference between then and now is our media. No one remembers the chicago fire, because it was a fire. But everyone remembers Pearl Harbor, because it's war. Same thing with 9-11 attacks. It's terrorist attack, not some fire caused by a horse, or some plague in a 14th century european country.
But anyway, the story was great. And ya know, they'll probably never release SC2.

Nice story, man. I agree with you on neutralizing terrorism, but I would take it a step further, destroying the entire religion of Islam. I'm tired of this shit we hear about it being a "religion of peace." If people would bother looking into the history of Islam, they would see that the religion is founded on, propagated by, and defended by acts of violence, nothing else. The Koran is packed full of violence, vengeance and totalitarianism, and anyone who calls themself a "peaceful Muslim" has no idea what they're talking about. You may as well call yourself a "Jesus-lovin' Satanist". I'm all for tolerating other people's beliefs, but not at the expense of every other culture.

In response to 28, there's not nearly enough radioactivity in the arsenal to make the entire planet unlivable. Hell, not even Hiroshima itself, ground zero for a bomb, is unlivable.
I agree with 45. We should destroy Islam. We should also destroy Christianity, since Christians were responsible for the Crusades and the Inquisition, along with pretty much exterminating the Native Americans. And we should destroy Hinduism too, for the caste system. And we should destroy Buddhism, because Buddhists tortured Christian missionaries. And we should destroy all athiests, since athiest rulers such as Stalin are responsible for more deaths than anyone else in history. |

As far as what i would do if something like that happened, I'd just try to keep living like always, just with a new and scary conversation topic- after all, you can't really do anything to protect yourself against something like that, and crumpling up into a ball isn't going to make your remaining days any better :/

Mr. Mediocre, I assure you I've researched this inside and out for far too many projects, and I've discovered that the Russian nuclear bite is rather unimpressive. The only thing I feel like mentioning here is that due to chronic underfunding and maintanance, their actual response time to even initiate a nuclear strike at maximum readiness is 30 minutes.
Of course, Russian nuclear capacity is the only thing even keeping them in "great power" status. Wheras the US military budget is at $400 billion, that of the Russians is at $50 billion. China's is at $20 billion. |

Well u fuckers just hope Russia and China doesnt form into one country or we're dead. Its a rumor that China if they go well for about 5 or 6 years they'll have enough money to do anything (except getting aliens =) And USA knows that if they sent out mass nukes nothing but trouble will happen and according to history the pattern of empire destructions shows that force will not do much, u have to remember satisfying citizens is difficult once u use force than most citizens will complain of "over-used force" and rebellions will happen then civil wars so the best way is to just talk or make wise decisions. Also America is that big and powerful mostly owns it all to China if China DID invade europe there would b no USA. The reason is because China got super high tech at that time much greater than any country at that time ancient China can use only 1/4 population and train them into soldiers with a few smart generals that'll b enough to capture almsot every country.

The terrorists wouldnt be able to get there hands on a big nuke. They would probably only be able to get a 12-20 kiloton bomb, if they made it. In order for them to get a 2-statge thermonuclear bomb, they would have to steal it, because it would take then 15 years to figuer out how to make it, and even then, they would probably only get a 200kiloton yeild. Getting a 3 megaton bomb isnt easy........
but 13 kilos in central park would kill <200,000 people.

to 46:
What the fuck are you talking about?! Have you read the Koran? Jesus Christ dude, all they talk about is conversion through war. It's basically a training manual for terrorism. Sure it has some good principles buried down inside, but this is completely overshadowed by the bloodthirsty ravings of the rest of the book.
and 47:
I appreciate your attempt at sarcasm (God knows I'm the king of dry humor), but your reasoning is a bit off. While all belief systems, religious or otherwise, have some skeletons in their closet, none embody a lifestyle of hatred and violence quite like Islam. Sins committed by Christians or Buddhists are not a reflection of the religion, they are a creation of the people, whereas Islam is completely centered around violence. Thats the distinction.
Also, keep in mind I'm not proposing KILLING all the people, just destroying the religion itself. We could use those flashy things from Men In Black or something, no murder needed.
