Stan? I thought you were dead! BTW, your numerical handle is really lame, you should go back to str8Balla.
This is part 1 of 3.. The phenomena is in conjunction with the upcoming portion, which deals with the behavior of paper-geniuses, IE: yourself. One of which will be the paper-genius's tendency to judge a piece without having read all of it first.
Thanks for really driving the whole thing home. |

| I guess if someone having a little fun at the expense of the people that point out everyone else's flaws is doing the same thing as those people, then yes, that is exactly what I am doing. However, I look at it as a bit of a reality check for the the overly-large amount of people on this website who take an unhealthy amount of pleasure in going through every submission with a fine-toothed comb, and then posting all of the typos, grammatical errors, sentence structure mistakes etc.. in the comment area. |
| #14 Lost[135381] |
| GAU42-09.labs.uidaho.edu |
In my opinion, the comment area should be for comments on the ideas put forth in the article, or any praise or constructive criticisms one might have. There is absolutely no point in attacking a submission because of the person's writing style, or their diction, and the kind of person that does such things is who my article is aimed at. Tell me how many times you have seen "I counted 4 typos in the first paragraph, so I just stopped reading" or "around the middle of the page you used their instead of there, wtf?"
To expect perfection, you must of course be perfect yourself, and none of the paper-geniuses that call this site home can claim that. By shoving their flaws into their faces for once, I am basically telling them to shut the hell up, and having a little fun while doing it. |

Point out an instance, on any website, that I have ever derided someone on their grammer, sentence structure, diction, punctuation, typos etc. and you will have a point.
Obviously since you will be unable to do so, you don't have a point, and are showing a lack of understanding.
You are mistaking the fact that I am criticising a group of people's actions for me criticising that same group of people for their personal short-comings. I am sure if you take a moment and ponder the situation, you will come to the realization that it is not at all the same thing. |

| adsl-67-39-3-229.dsl.dytnoh.ameritech.net |
| So grammatical inability isn't a short coming? Arn't grammar fiends just pointing out someone else's shortcomings? You're being awfully narrow sighted for someone who thinks they have the insight to point out other peoples' problems via gross generalizations. |

I read that wrong :O
I'm just continuing the circle of "pointing fingers at the pointer of fingers" in an attempt to show you nobody is going to listen to you who hasn't already come to the same conclusion just like you're not listening to me. |

You're being awfully touchy about me pointing out how paper geniuses are self-inflated windbags. Hit a little close to home?
For the last time, I realize that by pointing out that paper geniuses are useless I myself am being somewhat hypocritical, as I am pointing out flaws while criticizing them for what appears to be on the surface the same thing. However, the fact remains that if you throw mud, you had better be prepared to get a little dirty, and I feel it's high time that someone pointed out their flaws, as they have been doing it for so long unopposed. If you have a problem with it... dang?

Also, if someone gets their point acrost, and is able to express their unique idea in a way in which it can be understood, who cares about their grammar and sentence structure? Who really gives a damn if they had a run on sentence, or forgot some punctuation? Are they getting paid to publish entertainment for you to read, or are they doing it out of their love for the art? What gives you the right to criticize someone for doing what they like to do? Do you tell every little kid that's just learning how to play basketball everything they're doing wrong, just to make yourself feel like you're better at basketball than they are?

| #21 Lost[135388] |

The whole point is, nit-picking someone's work to death doesn't do anyone any good. Its time that a few people realized that, and did something else to make them feel high and mighty. A writer should be respected for making the effort to write, not looked down upon for not providing a perfect example of sentence structure and grammar.
If you can't understand what I mean, then don't bother reading anything else I write, because I'm afraid it's all just a bit over your head. |

In response to your post on #18...
Why? What is the point of trying to "show you nobody is going to listen to you who hasn't already come to the same conclusion."
Frankly, I think everyone that reads that is going to "listen to me." Whether they agree with me or not is of course up in the air, but to say no one is going to listen to me that doesn't already have the same though tendencies as I do is rather presumptuous, don't you think? |

| Wow, I didn't read this report, instead I skipped to the comment section. I will say that this is something which badly needed to be written, and for the sake of this website. I hope what you have written DOES "hit home" for some of the people on this website. Also, criticizing someone for being a pretentious windbag is justifiable, and doesn't make you a hypocrite by lowering yourself to their level or any such nonsense. Anyways, maybe I will check out this report, it seems like it could be a good read. |

| An interesting read, although I am not sure the first paper genius was much like Stan myself. Obviously some people lie over the internet (being a great basketball player in this instance), but I don't see what that has to do with being a paper genius. They simply do it to feel better about themselves, because their lives are probably sorely lacking in some respect. I must say your writing in this case was immaculate, and left open very little to criticism. Unfortunate, that some wouldn't consider your post otherwise. I would paint a different picture of "Sam" rather as someone a few years older and "wiser" then the group of his peers and feels the need to flaunt his superiority by pointing out their mistakes. Not much different from your Average Joe, IMO. |

| In an interesting(or not) related story, I recently made a post on a different website and was immediately flamed and had my intelligence insulted for misreading someone's post in typical fashion. The irony was that the "moron" flaming me had in fact misread my post as some sort of insult, when in fact it did not contain or hint anything of the sort. Funny how often that happens on the web, when people stretch to put other people down with little consequence, just to enjoy what they can get away with, and enjoy the feeling of superiority which they crave so much, but enjoy hardly often enough. Sorry about that run-on sentance, BTW. |

Before I get involved in this discussion, which I think I'll enjoy despite a certain degree of hostility, I'd like to make clear what I understand of what you're trying to say.
So here goes: Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I perceive a paper genius as someone who not only insists on perfect grammar but also uses advanced english that may not be understood by certain readers. This is my conception of your term 'paper-genius', and it is the definition that I will keep in mind while portraying my opinion/argrument. |
| #34 [135425] |
| 128warp179.newtel.com |
I don't think it's a bad thing to employ perfect grammar when submitting a comment or a peice of writing to those who frequent the net. It's an excellent method in ensuring that everyone understand the content. Nor do I, however, think it a crime for someone to make grammatical errors. As long as a person is coherrent in their writing, anything beyond a polite reminder to use proper grammar is unnecessary.
You say that paper geniuses use unnecessarily advanced language when they write. If this is true, then I fear I am a paper genius. I'm always excercising my vocabulary, not only when typing messages on the internet but also when speaking with others. I find I am able to express myself in more accurate ways than when I employ basic words. |

| I think a good example of a paper genius made himself present in the comment section in Kaos' recent story. Infact I believe Kaos' comment section was the main factor in your reasoning when posting this. That comment section went a little over the edge, didn't it? Let me ask you a question. Do you consider myself to fit the definition of a paper genius? I won't resent your opinion either way, I'm truly interested. I believe the manner in which I've posted on this site considers all point of views and has had an overall benefit to the demeanor of this site's posters. That's my opinion. I'd like to hear yours. Do you see me as a problem or part of the solution? |

#27, I can relate to your experience. All too often do people randomly flame others without getting their facts straight. This is why I ask anyone who plans on reading and responding to this comment to read it carefully and answer in a considerate manner. I'm looking for an intelligent disussion here, perhaps one in which we can all reach agreements that will solve some problems here on battlereports.com. Let us hold a council of reporters and viewers, raters and commenters. Let us all agree to stop the pointless flaming and start providing constructive criticism. Let us arrive at a conclusion that satisfies everyone's needs. Thanks for reading, and reply with care.

Actually I'm afraid you misunderstood something, as of course I would not say that someone who uses advanced language is being a pompous idiot, IE: a paper genius. If you have the vocabulary and the command of the language, then of course you should be able to use it without any fear of retribution.
I recently submitted the second segment of this article, in which I listed a few of the traits of the breed which I have labeled the paper genius. Perhaps that will clear a few things up for you.
P.S. The comment section that you referred to was indeed a large contributor to my motivation to write this, although I have had these feelings for a while now. |
