Wow! Cool! Bang, pow, zowee!
Now, this was a very original, very novel report! But it had two major issues:
1.) Not enough explanation about the game. You did explain, but it needed more. Perhaps a seperate Guide to Freelancer (see mine for ideas. =]) will help, since it seems to be different entirely, in style, feel and composition, from anything else featured here.
2.) The pictures were huge, dark and confusing. As before, they needed a lot of explanation -- what's this, that and the other thing -- and they didn't really show much to the brainless layman. Perhaps some diagrams would help.
However, the writing was good and the entire report was just plain cool. Definetly on the edge of my seat for the second one.
I'm going to give this a nine, but if those two problems didn't exist, it would easily be a ten. |

Dag BR. The universe is safe again.
The report wasn't quite as good as I'd have liked it though, which took some consideration because I'm usually orgasmic about anything you write.
First small hassle is the screenshots. I couldn't really make out... anything except for the odd ship. Of course this is 100% due to the fact that I haven't seen the game, but I'm sure that's true for the majority of us (might recitfy that later, sounds like a cool game).
Some of the action seemed repetitive (lemme count the number of time you said ambush :-), but was elegantly lifted by the final , close, encounter.
But I guess it's the nature of the eary stages of this game - EV:N was much similar - who cares about people carrying 10 tons of assorted origami from A to B.
Still, a great BR nonetheless, and thus the 8. |

woot, thanks for the feedback.
I'm very confused about the pictures, I must admit - they look perfectly lit and clear on my computer. Weird . . . I'll increase the brightness next time. Also, the pictures are a good deal better for the second br, but I still think they're alright here :).
Regarding explanation: I thought it was all rather straightforward, with regards to the pictures - after all, you don't really need a completely thurough, in depth explanation of every icon. However, I'll try and improve on that for the next installment.
Ah well, disappointing rating but, what can you do :D |

Dag, I understand that when you own and play the game, it seems so simple, so childishly simple, that eight paragraphs should be sufficient, indeed, generously enough, to explain it.
However.
As much as it makes sense to you, it may not make sense to others in the same way. So next time, elaborate, and talk as though you were explaining to someone who had never touched a computer; say, an Amish man. |

Wow! Nice report Dag. I actually did not have trouble understading any of it. It might have been because I have played a similar game (Privateer 2) in the past, but whatever the case, I had not trouble following the game.
The pictures were somewhat disappointing: too dark. It might be because of the computer I am using. My gf's dad has not up upgrade his in over 6 years, and the monitor is OOOLD! If, however, you do have a problem with the pictures, you might want to try and set the quality higher (if you are using Photoshop). I have noticed that as you decrease quality, the jpegs get much darker.
Outside of the picture, I absolutrely loved this. I used to be a great space sim fan, and this just reminded me of those days. I might actually buy the game. How's its simgle player btw? And what are systerm reqs?
Thanks in advance for answering my questions.

As Dag's wing leader, cabana boy, and attorney at law, I feel obliged to answer in his stead (and to inflate his comments):
You control thrust and strafe with the WASD combo, afterburners are tab, and the mouse controls your pitch and yaw (no roll control whatsoever). It's a very intuitive setup, and no need for a joystick.
With regards to the screen shots, freelancer does a horrible job of capturing them, I think it leaves out gamma altogether when saving them to 24-bit bitmaps (rather than factoring it in during the *long* saving period of like 1 full second).
Even fraps, a third party program that captures screens, saves them too dark. It's just necessary to brighten them a bit before using them in a report. Fraps, though, takes screenshots without a drop in framerate. |

But I did get a little confused about the structure a little bit...it seems like you HAVE to get to these various gates in order to go to different planets / systems, is that true? And getting ambushed after entering a gate? I'm trying to relate this to EV:N; is it like starting a jump then getting attacked, except, unlike EV:N, you get interrupted or something? I got fairly confused about that. |

The hopping twixt names kinda confused me for a bit, but not to the point where I couldn't follow along. Took me a while to remember who "Dan" was at times ._.
I can see the pictures fine myself...a couple are kind of unclear, and more quality would be nice (does FL just output screens at this quality or was it editing stuff?) but on the whole I could follow between the writing and the pics.
Like a few other people, I got confused by the game mechanics...I'm still not particularly sure how it works. Maybe because the last space sim I played (beyond my abysmal performance in EV:N) was Ares Rising, which was out of date when I bought it like eight years ago.

I didn't have any trouble actually seeing the screen shots, but I didn't really understand most of them, most likely because I've never seen the game. Despite that, the writing was great, and in my opinion, it, coupled with the dialogue, more than made up for the semi-confusing pictures.

No video CB, just video capture for those moments when it's too busy or too distracting to keep pounding the "print screen" key. And I *will* be filtering out the size for the final product... i have three gig's of pictures and videos from just a two hour session. Bandwidth conservatism has always been a main point for my reports.
As badass as these movies look, they take up approximately 2 mb/second to record when compressed. Of course there's codecs I could use, but I don't know of any. Probably no video.
Probably. No 130kb pictures though. Maybe.

Since you're new to Freelancer, I can give you some advice if you'd like it Dagomar... If you don't, skip ahead to the next comment.
When you are targeting an enemy ship, it will calculate where you need to shoot based on the speed of your gun's projectiles and where the enemy is headed. The problem is that if you have projectiles that move at different speeds, it throws this off. It averages the speed! Lasers move at 750 m/s. Plasma moves at 500 m/s. With that much of a difference I'm surprised you can hit anything at all beyond extreme point blank range. It is ABSOLUTELY VITAL that all your guns move at the same speed or as close together as you can possibly get.
In other words, ditch the lasers if you want plasma.
If you don't have single player campaign missions, then the only thing you're going to face that is a threat is other ships. Other ships always have shields. Therefore the best weapon combo is one stunpulse gun and the rest lasers. The stunpulse gun does EXTREME damage to shields but almost no damage to the hull. Add one of them in and shields will disappear almost instantly. Very good strategy.
Missiles work great if shot in vollies. In order to make one missile launcher work, you have to get very expensive missiles. If you pop three missile launchers on your freighter you will be a god, even if they are the cheapest thing you can find. Remember that missiles do very poorly against shields. Charge the enemy head on, shoot the shields to nothing with stunpulse, and drop a three pack of missiles at him at point blank range so he doesn't have time to hit the countermeasures. The enemy will go from full health to instantly dead, and if they are another player they won't have time to use the nanobots! Very effective.
Hope this helps. Can't wait for the next battlereport. Good hunting! |

Landon_Fox's strategies are good; however, you will still have trouble with the heavy-hitters. You know... the ships that tear you a new one when you charge them? If you spiral toward them, they will fire in circles around you. Once you get to close range, take them down. I did not try the freighter in the demo, but if its handling is bad, the spiral approach will not help.
When I played Privateer (the first one), I found the turret mode to be nearly useless. You are basically a sitting duck while you try to fire at highly maneuverable enemies with your fixed-firing arc weapons. While this exercise in futility is going on, your primary weapons array is idle. You may find that a super-heavy fighter is more economical than a freighter (even a beefy one). |
#58 [150880] |
| CPE00080d371d83-CM00080d371c83.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com |
| I think turret fire is meant to cover your butt while you retreat; freighters aren't meant for all-out combat anyway - they're mostly used for running trade routes or carrying away loot, while fighters protect them. |

Hey I got the game and playing single player now. Thanks for the projectile speed advice.
As for the turret mode, here is the deal. The difference between a turret and a gun is that a turret can turn full 360 degrees, which means it can fire forward and backward. The guns can only fire forward because their rotation is limited (if I had to guess, I'd say 70-80 degrees). When you are in turret mode you still control all the weapons (guns and turrets) but your view is not confined to that from your cockpit. The fact that you control all the guns and turrets means that when you shoot, all of them that can shoot there will. For example, you use turret mode to shoot forward, all guns and turrets will fire. You shoot back, only turrets will fire. You shoot up, only the guns and turrets on the top of your ship will fire. Hope this helps. |

there was a message from the server asking if anyone wanted 200k, personally i didn't want any cash but next thing i know we were both kicked and returned with an extra 200k, deciding that being given all that money would ruin alot of the game, we decided to get rid of it the easiest way we knew how, buy ripper mines (very expensive) and jettison them. thats what made the whole dag slamming a mine into my ship really suck, because when i jettisoned the mines i lost my shields, and thus dags mine ripped through half of my hull.
so no, if a cheat was enabled it most certainly wasn't done by us |

Actually, that's not entirely true Raider. The difference between guns and turrents is that guns are facing directly forward and turrents aren't. This is especially noticable with the Bretonian Freighter "Clydesdale" because one of the turrents can't shoot forward.
Oh, and Kalibaal... The freighter _IS_ the heavy hitter in Freelancer. They have eight weapon slots compared to six for a heavy fighter. And before you bring up the lower gun levels allowed, check out how little damage you gain by getting a gun one level higher. Those two extra guns are more powerful and cheaper too. Add in shields that are 20% to 25% stronger and you've got a hands down winner for brute force slugging power. That's why I recommend charging. Assuming equal level, the freight will win the slugging match every time. The last thing you want to do is get into dogfight where they can abuse your slow turn radius and lower power supply.
Personally, I just like the way light fighters handle... |
| #65 Raider[150912] |
| pcp01551300pcs.11thav01.fl.comcast.net |
Hey, by the way, for those of you who have played Freelancer, how do you use mines? I know they are homing, but they can't relly chase down a fighter, but some of them are definitely made as anti-fighter since they have such low damage output. Do you drop a bunch of them and set up a minefield or drop them when an enemy is close to you? What do you do with them?
Also, how you go about being a pirate in single player? With a fighter, you can't haul all that much cargo. With a freighter, you need fighter cover, or are freighters fine in dog fights (I've not flown a freighter yet, just heavy and light fighters). |
#66 [150915] |
| wc01.wlfdle.rnc.net.cable.rogers.com |
Alright, here's my take on all this:
Freighters are not great combat ships, no matter what. The best of the lot, the Humpback, has 5600 armour, 6 turrets and 3 guns. Impressive, huh? Not really. It's slow as hell, which makes it impossible to hit ANY fighter at all - even the super heavy ones - and its armour pales in comparison to a really great fighter. In addition, the maximum level of weaponry carried by freighters can't compare with the maximum level carried by the best fighters. Freighters can't ever come close to competing with the best fighters - chances are they won't even knock down its shields before they die.
That's my take, anyway.
With regards to mines, I haven't played the game longer than a couple weeks, but I've certainly had my uses for them. Use them to take out a slower freighter or cover your ass in case of a retreat, or even ambush unsuspecting vessels.
With regards to me not being back at my old level: I like this report, tt. It's not as good as my last StarCraft report, and it won't be nearly as good as my next br, but it was a fun little thing to make and I hope it was just as fun to read ;)

| I managed it, but only by doing the gay cruise-until-your-shields-restore-then-shoot (repeat as needed). --;; Any easier way? |

Goldrush, what ship are you in? If you're still in the first ship, you may want to upgrade before the mission.
What guns are you using? Are they all the same type of gun such as laser or plasma? If they aren't you're not going to be able to hit jack. Also, make sure you have the best guns on your ship that you can get.
Don't forget to max out on Nanobots and Shield batteries. They help a lot.
If you're in a light fighter, don't go head to head. Dodge! That's what the light fighter is for. Whenever you start to take damage, turn in random directions, use your strafing, and adjust your speed.
Use your afterburner. The only time you should be going under 200 speed units is when you're making a tight turn, dodging bullets, or letting it recharge after prolonged use.
If you still have trouble, don't take the mission and get more cash for upgrades. |

| There's afterburn? Son of a bitch... So that's why I'm getting hit so much. =/ I got to Mission 7 now; most of the recent missions require at least a couple of reloads. I usually survive the first fight, but it leaves me so drained that I'm dead meat in the next. I'm using someone's advice, with an Adv. Stunpulse and a Ripper for guns, and dual Slingshot missile launchers. |

| Holy shit, does afterburn make a difference. That and a normal Drone Mine launcher let me clear out the fleet shockingly easily. |

Freelancer, eh? Not bad, I'm a single player veteran myself (hit lvl 35 before I started doing other things) unfortunately my connection is too sucky to allow me to play multiplayer decently D:.
The drop-shields-then-point-blank-missile technique is VERY effective again AI opponents, and you really don't need more than 1 missile launcher. 1 strong missile to the cockpit will more often than not take their hull down to 25%ish if there's no shields in the way, making it easy enough to come around for a finishing strafe. Higher level missiles get VERY expensive, so you want to conserve them, especially on extended journeys through systems that don't have tradelanes. In those cases you can expect to be attacked over half a dozen times going from one jumphole to the next.
Also, it's often a good idea to get in good with the factions that most often fly in the systems you want to go too so that they aren't attacking you all the time. Your Reputation guages show you how friendly or hostile you are to every group you've encountered, and certain NPCs can hack your Rep for a price, which can get steep if you're really hated by somebody. You can also alter your Rep the hard way by helping out the people you want to be friendly with by attacking factions who are their enemies. For example, if you want to be Friendly with the Liberty Rogues, you need to be attacking Liberty Police, Liberty Navy, and Xenos ships, either on your own iniative or via Missions.
GL, HF. And try using the Nav Map menu to give yourself personal Waypoints. That will help keep you from getting lost. :) |

Awesome report Dag! The writing had me smiling most of the way through, and at the same time wove a great, detailed story. The image of you fighting alone while Lucky was on the phone and Keanu was battling popups had me laughing out loud. The screenshots were fine brightness wise, but I've never played the game so I knew next to nothing about what I was seeing. Still, your report made me want to try out the game.

Dagomar! You promised yourself you wouldn't do these anymore, lol.
I knew you would when you got your new computah though. I'll be sure to display these reports to mass amounts of people at the most inopportune moments.
Peace out...see you soon! |
