Long ago I expected the first Civ III report to come from Drefsab. Years later, and it's a giant text by .Praetor. Quite a great game, too.
For some reason I really enjoyed this report. Quite as good as they can come without some overkill photoshopping skills. You are still the master, Prae.

Exceptional writing, interesting game, and clear screenshots. Graphically this report was lacking a little - don't get me wrong, while it was clear in all respects the format and sheer quality of the graphics wasn't the best. It sounds a little ironic for me to be saying this, as a reporter who has relied on writing at the expense, sometimes, of images, but still it didn't immediately scream "10!" after I was done reading it. Nevertheless, an excellent work.
I'd say 9.4 - rating a 9. |

At first, I thought it didn't have enough pictures. And at first, I thought, oh good, its another .praetor report, given a 9.5, time to congratulate, say it was good, and not actually read the thing.
But I really did read it. And I really liked it. The writing kept me interested in a game that I have never played and heard very bad things about (Want to play one full game? Kiss your weekend goodbye is what they say.) I think that's the most difficult thing for reporters to do; make people interested in reports about games they haven't played.
In any case, I had one thing bad to say about this, which is probably just a personal thing. It wasn't professional enough for me; its like I saw too much random thought in a few parts.
9.5, as is. |

Wow. My first thought was, "wtf I'm not gonna sit here long enough to read this". Next thing I knew, it was a half hour, two glasses of water, a piss, and a bag of microwave popcorn later, and I was left wanting more. The writing drew me in, even though I haven't played civ3 (I played civ2 like a fanatic for a couple of years) and I seriously think it could have been 10 times longer and I would not have quit reading until I was done. Here's to hoping the next installment is posted when I wake up tomorrow. :)

The original Civ was a fucking classic. I used to play it in elementary school. The wonders of 2d graphics and horribly pixelated unit drawings!
But I digress, excellent writing! Very detailed and what-not. Though I must admit, all that text gave me a headache. But then again, it's rather late. :)

Thanks for the kind comments. Chris and Decay in particular made me laugh and feel good.
To those who commented on the pictures, I know they weren't of the highest quality. However, I felt they were necessary for a Civ3 report. They provide a view of the terrain being fought over and the city locations that can't be efficiently described by words.
To anyone who noticed the last minimap - all will be revealed in the next installment (sigh, more pictures to edit). Actually, I just finished the next installment and saved the raw screenshots.
Thanks for the compliments on the writing. It's not perfect, because I would have to spend a few days forgetting the report and several more hours to hold myself to that standard and then still miss something. I still counted about 10 errors after posting and LuckyNewbie and mattzarella pointed out a few more on b.net when I stopped in tonight.
Compliments and thank yous to Johnny Vegas and Brad the sever guy, because I forgot to mention them in the report. And thanks for all the comments, they're why I write BRs. Keep 'em coming :). |

Holy smokes a .Praetor report.
But it's a .Praetor report on Civilization 3! NOOOOOOO!!! Heh, I'm disgruntled about that because I detest Civ3, and because I have a Civ 2 report in the works and it's going to seem like I'm copying you, haha. Anyway.
The writing is fantastic, with a few errors (The biggest one was, "A newly produced Legion was produced") but nothing major. You still got style.
About the pictures. They were fine -- not good, but fine. They did what you wanted. If you DO want them to be gorgeous eye-candy, just let ZerG~LinG, me or Dialtone_ know. Or somebody else.
I'm going to give this a 9. Was it a perfect 10? I didn't feel so, but it was very very awesome. |

This is what I call a comeback - looooooooong and detailed. I liked the few screenshots btw - so much that I'd really like to see a few more so provide a break in the long slabs of text. They really do provide great value, especially in a game like this.
There's nothing like a good old case of world domination - can't wait for next installment.
Things I would love to see: Bigger font size, please :o And a slightly larger line height wouldn't hurt either. More pictures that show good overviews would also be nice.

My favorite thing about this site is the surprise reports that you don't expect, that come out of nowhere. Civ3 is probably my favorite game. I have played far more Starcraft and it was definitely my favorite at the time, and favorite multi-player game of all time. Civ3 however has such rich strategy, and a great historical context.
I especially liked the writing in the early game. Late game my mind started getting a little buggy trying to follow the action, with all the units and city names and such. I would have appreciated some more images to help me follow what was going on. Also the images that you did take needed to be zoomed in, as I guess my old eyes have a hard time seeing the detail in a 1024x768 image whose width is reduced by 50%.
I think that if you had taken this same report, and gotten a little help from one of the gfx wizards here, it would have been a 10 easy.
But for now I say a 9, with eager anticipation for the next installment!! |

I think you're really gonna love this. I'm probably gonna add about 10 comments on this report asking questions about the game.
I own the original Civ (despite how much I love Starcraft, Civ 1 is the best game ever created for my money), and Civ:Call to Power (not made by Sid Meier but still has a good feel to me). I've been pondering getting Civ 3, and by the end of this report I'll probably be convinced to do so.
My question is, in the Civ games I've played before a trade of Alphabet for Bronze Working would be advantageous. Is it less so in Civ 3 or were you just concerned about giving any tech to the Persians? |

| pool-68-236-153-52.alb.east.verizon.net |

Civ3 is actually pretty different from the previous two, as far as what units are pretty good, Maareek. For instance in Civ2 archers were the way to go. Now, they suck compared to swordsmen and horsemen. I didn't want to give the Persians any techs at that time, because if there was a third civ they had met and I hadn't, they would trade my techs away, and I could only deal with one rather than 2 civs.
Answer more later, gotta go. |

The Great Library gives free techs when two people you have contact with know a gech. However, it is rendered obsolete the turn after YOU discover Education. I think in civ 2, it's when anyone discovers education or something. Been awhile. So if you stay isolationist, you can gain a whole bunch of post-Education techs (as long as you get them the same turn as Education, since Great Library will be obsolete the next turn). That's the best I can explain it.
Thanks Maareek, thanks Johnny. I'll try to include a mix of zoomed-in and zoomed-out screenshots next time. I didn't really intend for you to read what every city is producing on the zoomed out ones, just show national borders :).
Thanks hidden. I don't know if you've read previous comment sections... but that made me laugh. Zerg~Ling, I may now draft you again to provide me with adequate font and line height tags.
Now that 5 people have rated the report (was fast, lots of new raters...), I feel fine mentioning I'd have briefly considered giving the report an 8 before hitting myself in the head and giving it a 9. |

Great stuff, I don't think extra pictures were neccessary due to the small area being fought over; with the odd pic you included and your good writing I knew where everything was.
It's also interesting to hear you explaining the many little things you have to ''micromanage'' to do well at Civ3. I have only played the game at it's low levels (e.g chieftain/the rank above that), and am now interested in trying the higher levels of the game.

Personally, I'd like it if you added "letter-spacing: 1;" to that CSS. It may just be spoiled from my latest writings but the letters were closer than I would like. Personally, I like the black on white it was a lot easier on my eyes for this report (which I don't think is as long as Tao of FFA so the length is nothing to bitch about for me).
Yeah .Praetor, having got a little farther I see what you're saying about giving that tech. And LameJoker, thanks for the response but I was asking about the trade giving alphabet for bronze working. I have never, ever traded Bronze working away in any Civ game regardless of who it is.
And as far as the pics, I kind of liked em better like they were. Fancier pics would have just called for fancier formatting to go with them. Though I am tempted to start pulling out parts of comment sections about .Praetor using pics, but I won't...I don't think.

Ok, you have all convinced me to experiment with more wacky HTML. I'm sure it won't be a complete and total disaster (remembers a certain bold tag).
Tal, if you want to try higher difficulties, I highly recommened going to civfanatics.com and reading the article on jumping from Monarch to Emperor level. It includes a whole bunch of stuff I learned the hard way. (Don't do Deity, it's just insane.)

About barbarians, do they set up their own cities in civ 3? I noticed you speaking about a "barbarian encampment" but I was wondering whether it was captured our founded by the barbarians themselves.

| Wow! I don't read very many battlereports, especially battlereports similar in length to this report. But after I read the first paragraph of your report, I was hooked till the end. The writing was captivating; I especially liked reading about the different tactics and strategies you used throughout the game. My only complaint would be that the writing toward the end of the report seemed rushed compared to the writing at the report's beginning. Nevertheless, an excellent job! I await the sequels with anticipation. |
| #60 .Praetor[151363] |
| c-67-172-163-127.client.comcast.net |
Drintr, yeah, the writing at the end was a bit rushed. It seems hard to make a long war interesting (x legions next to y city, z legions lost taking it. six times...) when the end isn't really in doubt. So I was trying to hurry through it.
Maareek, barbs can't have cities like in Civ2. They set up little barb-specific camps (kind of like the opposite of a goody hut) in unexplored territory that send out the occasional 2-hp warrior, horseman (when someone discovers Horseback Riding), and galley (when someone discovers Map Making). On Deity, there's no bonus for fighting barbs. If you disperse a camp (because they might set up another one nearby or when the area reverts to fog of war), you get to loot 25 gold. The computer likes to hunt these camps, so they're not that much of a problem. But they'll sometimes send out 'massive uprisings' when people enter the middle ages, with camps generating stacks of like 25 horsemen or so.
Those can be a real pain, but barbs can't take or destroy cities and they disappear after sacking one. I think they should be able to destroy size 1 cities, but they'll only kill off population, take some gold, destroy buildings, or destroy what you're working on if they get through your defense. So if you have uprising problems, most players just use up their gold in diplomacy, and set up a sacrificial city to be reduced to an unimproved size 1. |

Playing on "Deity" alone should give this report a 10! Awesome br. Reading it is like reading history holding 2 pom-poms cheering for the Romans. I can imagine the frustration when your 2nd Persian War fell flat.
I don't think you need a lot of screenies as the civ game is just a map with little animation. I didn't get lost on the action at all. Oh, by the way, I only played Classic Civ and it's frustrating enough on King level. Now I have to find out what an Immortal looks like. Maybe a closeup pic or two of the main units in the next br will help. Cheers! |

heh praetor.. i'm so different with you. I'm an old school Civ2 HP Fanboy. And since when aren't phalanx good defensive units?
Oh well. It just seems a lot more random to me, and that isn't a good thing. Also, there is the legendary spearman>tank problems.
But then again, whatever floats your boat. |

I prefer to play the russians on a pangea type large map personaly, cossacs absolutely rule the middle ages until your opponents get the first salpenter based defenders, and even then they're a force to be reconed with, plus you can hold multiple fronts with their speed and defense.
As for the report, i really liked the strategic insights into the battle plans, taking your time to plan attacks is half the fun in the game. More screenshots with arrows pointing important cities and movement of armies would have helped hugely for people that dont know much about the game imo.
Civ is a time black hole. |

| Non gun armed units had 10, gun armed units had 20. Metal Ships/Tanks and Mech Infantry had 30, Aircraft Carriers and Battleships had 40. |

| Nevermind the spearman >> tank problems.. the good old Man'O'War > Submarine is a gem. Not entirely sure how a Man'O'War ATTACKS a submarine.. but eh. |

| Heh. Perhaps I didn't patch my old, gimp version of Civ2. But my phalanxes all had 10 hp, while my archers and legions had 20. And I had to dig in the civlopedia for that kind of info. It was teh suck, as all these kids say today. |

| Allthough aside from their gay ability to kill submarines, Man'O'Wars have to be the worst special unit in the game. They're obsolete one tech after they become available and they suck =/. |
| #79 .Praetor[151600] |
| c-67-172-163-127.client.comcast.net |
| It's a close race with the F-15 to be sure. Man'O'Wars at least come about at a good point to have a golden age. Other notable stinkers would be Musketeers (bonus on attack for a defensive unit) or the War Elephant (takes a resource shortage to be useful). |

| I mean, if you and a scientific nation research them at the same time THEY INSTANTLY GET IRONCLADS. GAYEST THING EVER. |

| h64-141-27-82.sunwave.net |
(More gay triple posting ?:[)
I've always found it very gay how India can't be cut off from horses and iron and lose their main offensive force early medieval age. The War Elephant is definately a better asset than the Man'O'War.
I'd say the order of worst units goes:(worst to horrible)
Man'O'War
F-15
That mongol horse archer thingy(expansion set only)
Musketeer
H'wacha(Expansion set only)
Jaguar Warriors

| I like jaguar warriors. It's a pain, but you can conquer like 6 cities before Iron Working if you really pump them out. I remember one capitol on hills behind a river with 4 spearmen... took like 20 J warriors :). |
| #86 I_am_Nitros[151756] |
| h64-141-27-82.sunwave.net |
| Eh, I still find the Jaguar warriors to be pretty useless, if they build a few more spearmen and hold on you're in trouble. Or if they're greece/carthage then your warriors can get screwed over. |

| Wow, this was great. God I love this game. I just finished a game of Civ II yesterday (which I think is better in a lot of ways) and this makes me want to play another which is always the sign of a good report in my book. |

| About the unique units you guys are describing, you are playing pre-conquests it looks like. In Conquests, Ironclads are a non-required seperate tech, which almost never gets reserach, so Frigates and Man-O-War stay useful much longer (plus in Conquests they are MUCH faster than Ironclads, 5 to 3 movement points). Musketeers are now 2.5.1 and have defensive bombard of 2. And War Elephants now have an extra HP, which is a pretty big deal imo. |

| pcp02066469pcs.11thav01.fl.comcast.net |
| Yeah, Conquests actually did a great job at making the game better and more fun to play. Definitely more balanced in terms of UUs. Worth buying imo, unlike Play the World. |

Yeah I bought conquests instead of play the world, as I heard conquests gives you everything play the world does, but more.
Interesting to hear about the play balances, I didn't realize they adjusted the stats of the unique units. Man if I was in high school again I'd play the hell out of this game.
Civ 3 team has been great about balancing. Can't wait to reinstall it, and download the latest patch and rekindle the Civ 3 flame.
(Jesus what am I saying? NOOO!!) |

| Well unlucky me I bought play the world when it came out, and now have no money for conquests =/. But heck it's still damn fun. |

| The computer is so hilarious. I get one of them to sign a military alliance against this tiny little nation and they nuke it silly. So the rest of the computers declare war on the computer using the nukes and nuke them and they all declare war on eachother for using nukes so now the whole world is a free for all with nukes flying every which way while I look on and reap the benefits of peace. |
