| Feel free to comment on the game, the crappy pictures, or anything you feel like. But I would especially welcome your comments on the report writing itself and the beige background. I also considered skyblue and white when formatting the report. I went with beige because it seemed unobtrusive and easier on the eyes than white. |

Awesomeness. I say 10.
"The next turn, a few cities enter We Love The King Day, a celebration hat occurs when your people are very happy you’re the ruler. This rarely happens to me, so I’m immediately suspicious. It turns out I’ve left the luxury allocation at 30% since the rioting about the Fourth Persian War. The miser in me immediately turns the luxury allocation back down to 20% and regrets the lost revenue. We Love The King Day promptly disappears."

the creamish beige color gives the report a more refined look than the previous one had (just black on white), but next time i recommend making it a liiiiiiittle bit darker, 'cause it'd match the pics more and be a tiny bit less stressful on the eyes. but the color is generally good =]
i'm biased about the length of reports, naturally, but civ3 needs to be long for it to work. i wont lie to you, i didn't read all of it, but what i did read i found it hard to keep my interest. don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, i just found myself skimming a lot more than i should. it might be that i have a short attention span, or that i've never played (or cared much) for civ3 before.. but it also might be the giant hurricane currently sodomizing my community with its giant airborne penis.
either way, it was a really good report ;D |

Hey man, way to crank this one out in record time!
I'm just checking in, using my mom's computer here. I'm about to go out, but I did manage to read the first 1/4 of the report.
I thought your talk about the crowded continent in the early game was masterful. All the speculation over who would attack who, etc.. was very interesting, and far more thought than I ever give to my Civ3 games.
When I return from my trip, I'm going to fire up Civ 3. You and Raider have been a killer 1-2 punch as of late. Civ 3 is a perfect game to battle report and I hope to see more in the future.

hey praetor i have a few questions. good report by the way, your report, in conjunction with raiders, made me download (i mean buy) civ3 and see how fun it was. That being said
1) How do you trade dyes? I noticed you can't do it in the trade menu. Do i need to make a road from my capital city to theirs? if so that would require a rite of passage no?
2) How do you make an embassy. I know when you research writing it gives you the option, but if u decline (cuz of not enough gold ) i cant figure out how to recreate one.
3) i just noticed that when i trade stuff, theres an advisor in the top right telling me if the ally will accept the trade. Is this advisor always true or simply estimative?
4) when you trade with someone, then realize they have nothing good to trade, and you terminate it, does that decrease relations?
5) on unprosperous lands, can I somehow improve food amount or alleviate storage?
6) and how is it that in for example praetor's game, he was able to research so fast? I've set scientific research to usually over my per turn income, putting me in negatives, YET i am in 700 AD and barely starting the middle ages. Is this normal?
7) and what would you argue is most improtant. Going for democracy, an advanced military? etc?
Thanks for answering in advance. |

o yeah one last question :D
how do you trade by sea? I built galley's but can't figure out how. Also anyone who can answer these questions by all means please do :D |
| #24 Red6[152085] |
| p4.Kiewit.dartmouth.edu |
Err.....two last questions. I promise they are teh last :(
1) my foreign advisor menu doesn't include all the countries when i play with more than 9 other countries. I'm not sure if this is a bug in my downloaded, i mean bought version, or maybe just a problem with civ3. I have the original, no expansion set.
2) scientists. how do they work? does making one increase the speed of research? i notice sometimes they revert back to workers; is this because the scientists starved to death? |
| #25 Red6[152088] |
| p4.Kiewit.dartmouth.edu |
| .....:( and when you build a colony overseas with a galley and settler, do you need a harbor on that colony to do overseas trade? do you need galleys to do so? |

| Ehh, yes you need a road from your capital to their capital to trade with them. You also need a road connecting the resource to your capital. Harbours also work to link cities into the trading network once navigation is researched, as do airports. |
| #30 I_am_Nitros[152094] |
| h64-141-27-82.sunwave.net |
Once writing is researched you can press the little E button in the bottom right to access the espionage screen, from which you can establish embassies.
No closing the trading screen doesn't affect relations.
In vanilla civ3 there's a bug where you cannot view more than 8 civilizations. In PTW and Conquests there's a little button in the top left of the foreign advisor screen that let's you switch civs around.
The main way to acquire alot of tech is to trade technology with the computer... ALOT. Research generally acounts for all of 3-5 techs in most of my games, and I mean by the end of the game when everything is researched. By that time just steal it from comps who are ahead of you. Of course I always play on deity, so on easier difficulties comps might not be ahead of you.. eh.
If you intend to do alot of warring late game go for Communism and ESPECIALLY grab that Longetivity wonder. Grows lots of extra people to be pressed into forced labour :D.
If you want to be an economic powerhouse then democracy is your government.
Scientists work by making one of your citizens stop working in the city screen(he'll turn into an entertainer), then click on the entertainer twice to turn him into first a tax collector, then a scientist.

Tremendous battlereport, the past three civ3 brs have really been great - perhaps the best stuff released this year. Since everyone else will congratulate you on the quality of your writing and format, I'll just stick to what I *didn't* like as much, so as to explain the 9 I'm about to give ;).
The images took a hell of a long time to load for me, personally, and I have a cable modem. I'm not sure what it was, perhaps the format, but it took about 5-10 minutes for me to load those pics, and even then they didn't show fully - and I tried three times.
Frankly, that's about it. I was expecting to have more, but, surprise surprise, I don't. This was a damn good report. I'm anticipating a flurry of 10's, but personally I think this should get a 9.6 or so - it didn't have that truly epic, historical feel I got when I was reading Raider's report ( well, at least not quite to the same extent ), and I thought that should have gotten a 9.7 or so. Reports this good are really hard to rate, I do wish we had a decibal system!
9 for now, but anticipate higher ;). |

thanks for the help. I'm currently in a game on chieftain, around 1280 AD or so. I have around 12 cities maybe, the highest 3 have around 12 population. Unfortunately I'm missing foreign trade, and I seem to be "technologically backward" according to my advisor. I don't have much gold in the bank and most of the other countries are ahead of me technologically
What should I do? How do I steal technology? How do I improve resources while not having a horribly war weary population (hence maybe not democracy). Should I just build more cities? The people love me, but that doesn't help when I have 20 gold in the treasury and am raking in maybe 5 gold a turn because I'm spending 50 or so % on scientific spending and losing the rest due to maintainence and corruption costs. (btw I have a republic government right now) |

Desert Demon - I found that funny after re-reading it myself :).
Johnny - Someone needs to appreciate the strategic thinking, I'm glad you enjoyed it. And speaking of killer, this report kind of felt like a 1-2 punch to my free time.
Wakiki - sorry, never really like color coding that much. Guess it's hard to tell who's city is who's if you're not a history guy.
I_am_Nitros - The naval combat that did go on was important, if not raging. I didn't lose a single land unit in a galley, and I think the Iroquois lost probably 8-10.
Dagomar - trust me, I'm flattered. I enjoy high ratings like anyone, but I'm not looking for a 10. I privately think that The Tao of FFA ~OR~ Free For All Axioms is my all-time best report. I don't know if I'll ever really achieve that standard again. Dunno what's up with the images. They're pretty big .png's. |

Red 6 - 1) Open up the trade menu, in the bottom right you can see the civilizations you have contact sorted by whether or not you can trade with them. Double-clicking will open up diplomatic relations where you can initiate a trade. This is also a way around talking to someone you can't see in the diplo screen in a large game. 2) Lots of people have trouble with that one. I did. Double click on the star next to your capitol. 3) The advisor is pretty much dead on. Once I got the AI to accept a deal when the advisor only said we were close. 4)No. Demanding stuff and threatening them can decrease relations. 5) Granaries halve the amount of food lost upon growth, Irrigation can increase food supply, though often not in despotism. Railorading irrigated squares further does so. No food caravans like Civ2. 6)Normal for beginners. Also, I didn't research fast. Raider did mostly through conning the AI in negotiation. See civfanatics.com strategy section. 7)Depends on your starting position. Don't invest too much into wonders.
Trading by sea is important to reach everyone later, especially during war. You both have to have a harbor connected to your capitol by road. A ship has to be able to sail between the harbors with no danger (like I can't trade with Greece, etc, in my game yet since a galley would be in danger in roughs seas). Foreign advisor, yeah sucks, I always use trade screen to intiate diplomacy. Vanilla problem. Scientists give you one total science, like taxmen. Not that useful, unless you use that one for minimum research. Specialists are the first to starve, and depending on the patch they are sometimes reassigned when cities grow.
A city won't have a resource unless it's connected by road or road-harbor combo, like capitols for trading. P.S. Workers can walk through other people's lands for road-building. Just ignore the request to leave.
As for your game, well try stopping research and buying techs from other civs (establish embassies to improve relations). That is unless you're much smaller. Then try getting an army and extorting techs. |

I usually don't spend much time thinking because I wanna finish my games in one sitting and click through everything as fast as I can (probably why I play prince and king instead of deity). I read Texcoco as Texaco and wondered why there were gas stations in Civ3.
I read it as Texaco, and figured that's where they got the name for the gas station from until I was reading more and saw it again. Don't feel bad.
Once again it was great. I don't understand a lot of this game, but the more I read of your reports, the more I begin to get and the easier my games are. I can't agree with Ling though. It did feel just as, if not more, epic than Raiders (sorry Raider :D). This could almost be a text only, and even if it was, I would still probably know what you were talking about. Sweet report. I enjoyed it. I know many people expected mad naval combat, but it was too early in the game for that.
As always nice writing, good detail, and a very interesting game for me because I rarely play archipellago type maps. This report makes me want to try them out more.
And in case you did not see the comment I posted about Conquests expansion under my report, the problem with the Forbidden Palace was fixed in one of the patches. Another thing you will like imo is the new elements that come in very handy in island play. For example, the new governments, Feudalism and Fascism rock on those maps. Feudalism especially is great for small island nations that have not built aqueducts yet and have small size cities. Fascism...man get two islands, palace on one and FP on the other, and you become nearly unstoppable late game.
Anyway, I kind of got off topic here, so here is the recap:
-I loved the report, and it made me want to play island maps.
-Issue with FP that Conquests had is fixed now, just make sure you have the latest patch.
-I really loved the report. It's cool to see a different way of doing civ3 report where you do a summary rather than a timeline. 9.5 |

A few points to asnwer the questions you asked in the first comment. I liked the background--beige works well with civ3 colors. Definitely not white. Sky blue could work if you made it really light and edited your images to fit that color scheme (add borders, etc.) Imo beige is the best choice of those three though.
The only drawbacks were some spelling errors (wrong words rather since I am guessing you used a spell check) and in some instances I wanted some map updates to keep track of your conquest of cities with weird names ;) Not that it was not easy to follow, just that pictures would have been an additional tool to use.
But like I said above, overall, a great read, and I loved it. |

Ok I spent an hour to read the last 3/4 of the report. I would say this is better writing than the first one, and also you included more screenshots with useful captions.
I give it a 10 instead of a 9 like your last one, as your images were better, and this report was easier for me to follow thanks to your frequent "progress updates".
I really enjoyed the level of detail you provided in regards to your strategic thinking.
You and Raider have as I mentioned, forced me to start playing Civ 3 again. I'm not a Civ3 god though so I play on Monarch. I tried Archipelego but got stuck on a skinny peninsula with no Iron. So I restarted and am doing a bit better. Anyway, the trading strategies I have learned from the recent Civ 3 reports have really helped me out.
Nice report, can't wait for the rest of the story! |

| oh a question, I've never used the Great Library, can you explain the exact mechanics of how it works? I assumed that it just always worked--any time any other 2 civs you had contact with got a tech, you got it too automatically. What was all that about saving up your contact to maximise the effect of the library? It's a one time deal? |
| #58 .Praetor[152278] |
| dhcp201.des.ucdavis.edu |
| You're right about how it works. I was just keeping my foreign contacts under 1 - to neutralize the Great Library. Then when I finally made contact with the rest of the world, I gained technologies past Education - the tech that makes the Great Library obsolete. |
#59 [152279] |
| 68.79.174.39 |
| Prae are you saying that the Great Library's function depends on how many civs you have contact with? Explain. |
| #60 .Praetor[152280] |
| dhcp201.des.ucdavis.edu |
Gargh!!! Last time. If I can't explain it, stop asking me.
Great Library gives a technology to you the turn after two civlizations YOU HAVE CONTACT WITH also know a technology. It becomes obsolete after EDUCATION is researched BY YOU. If you never have contact with TWO civilizations, you can't get EDUCATION from the Great Library.
Then, when contact finally happens the Great Library comes into effect. Since you just got contact with these new civilizations, you get ALL the technologies that at least two civilizations know the next turn. Including techs that come after Education. |
| #61 .Praetor[152281] |
| dhcp201.des.ucdavis.edu |
And I know that explanation didn't work, because two years from now people will be asking me how the Great Library trick works, and never ever think to look it up on a civilization fansite. So here's two other examples:
THE NORMAL WAY
You build Great Library, and happily know all your neighbors. They research techs. You get free techs. Two of them research Education. You get Education from Great Library. Great Library becomes obsolete (stops working). You have to research Astronomy on your own.
THE NEVER-USE-IN-A-BR WAY
You build Great Library, and keep away from your neighbors like they have the plague. They research techs. You sit there. Two of them research Education, but they've never heard of you. You sit there. Two of them research Astronomy (after Education). You finally make contact, you get all the techs two of them know - including Astronomy - on the next turn. Great Library goes obsolete (stops working). |
| #62 .Praetor[152283] |
| dhcp201.des.ucdavis.edu |
| I'm now going to ignore all questions or references that have anything to do with the Great Library. I get the sinking feeling that every time I try to explain this stupid trick, 30 people get a different wrong idea of what's happening. |
#63 [152286] |
| 68.79.174.39 |
Prae thanks for finally clearing that up, crystal clear now!
So what happens if someone conquers the city with Great Library in it, you get Education, then conquer it back?

I actually did not know it worked that way, so that was cool to learn. |

All right, when I think about it, there are just tons of little details about the game that I picked up somewhere and have no idea how I know it works that way. And probably some details I don't know. Sorry I got irked, but it felt like I was trying to explain spamming the 'stop' button to keep burrowed lurkers from firing till the marines are right on top of them. Lots of times.
But there are a whole lot of valid questions. JV's joke question was probably valid in the Civ3 beta... And there are other things like (in my version of vanilla at least) if the city with your Forbidden Palace gets conquered, you have to re-take the city (or raze it to the ground) before you can rebuild your FP. Why? Who knows. But it happened to me one game. I was really worried that once I'd lost the forbidden palace, it was gone forever. Like that for other small wonders... dunno.
Apparently, way back when it used to be if you destroyed the city with Manhatten Project no one could build nukes anymore. Never saw it happen myself... |

| Yeah, some thing are just difficult to explain when both people aren't sitting in front of the same computer screen looking at the game. |

| Ok, official word on Tales of the Flesh. I actually have the next three or four parts written. But it could very easily be a disaster AGAIN, so I'm not touching it publicially till the whole thing is finished (if it ever is). |

| can someone tell me why on earth anyone would want to build an army in civ3 |

| To build Heroic Epic when you can't rush a wonder because they're all built right now. Actually, I hear in Conquests they're much more powerful. They can also be useful in the Industrial age as well, as lead attackers to take out difficult defenders in big cities without massive losses. |

| they'd better be more powerful in conquests, as in vanilla civ3 they can actually be worse since you can only attack once with one |

| armies are godly in conquests. You can singlehandedly turn a game around with them. They can attack 3 times, as 3 normal units can in Conquests, they can heal instantly with a barracks even if they have 1 out of 15 hp (godly!) and they basically never lose a fight. If you're in a tough war that you can't win and you can't end peacefully, the army is your solution. Once when I was on the ropes getting fucked by 4 ai's, I used an army to singlehandedly take one out. That army killed at least 50 enemy units and conquered 7 cities. It was insane. After that I was able to get peace with 2 other ai's and take my army and a buttload of other units to conquer the last one, switching me from least to most powerful in about 50 turns. |

Impressive Napoleic. I've never had an army be THAT good for me, but they are very powerful. I recall a made an army once of 3 elite knights that trounced everything.
I got a scientific leader recently that I used to rush one of my wonders. Thought of starting the "age of science" but I figured it was a waste since my Civ was pretty bad scientifically anyway. |

You know, I really thought someone would start talking about Tales of the Flesh alot earlier, like comment 4 or so on your last one. But I knew it was coming!
As for this report, fan-freaking-tastic. Just plain loved it, as usual.
Continuing on to comment 100!...maybe. |

No, I finished it quite a while back but didn't comment. And since .Prae added about 10 comments on my last report, I figured I needed to.
Omg! I see I was right to avoid reading Tales of the Flesh...uncompleted series are the bane of people like me :(. |
