Ahh, X-COM my dear old friend. The reason I started playing LSN was because it was made by the same people who made X-COM (its not the same though).

An interesting report though somewhat disorganized. I realize this was a faster, looser report but the game mechanics and statistics could've been separated for style. Pics were a bit haphazard too.

The tactical considerations that explained your actions were intriguing to read. Brought back good memories of past games.

I'll give this one an 8.

Gamewise I did agree with a lot of what you said but I did disagree with other parts but I'll put it in my non-rater post since they are opinions. =)

Bah, I lied. I'll just write this really faster, sloppier, and forget a whole lot of things. Here's some things that I thought you missed saying or just wanted to discuss (you probably know them anyway).

I'm pretty sure only units that have battle combat can get promoted but quality doesn't seem to matter as much. Units that only fought once might be able to get promoted over others that fight a lot. Units only get promoted 1 level at a time after a mission so units sitting at a base can get promoted. The amount of promotions gained are based on the amount of soldiers you had overall.

Promotions are important because they boost the base stats of soldiers with every promotion. The stats are boosted in areas the soldier used the most in combat. Snipers gain increased accuaracy, Grenadiers get more strength/throwing accuracy, Heavy weapons get strength/stamina, etc. Higher ranking officers on missions also means that the death of low ranking units has less of an effect on moral. The death of a high ranking unit does affect moral greater than usual though.

Reactions: Higher reactions affects what happens during both friendly and enemy turns. Basically when the 2 sides encounter each other, any order stops and the faster reacting unit goes first. If the alien has faster reactions and sufficient time to shoot, he will shoot first during your turn. Vice versa during the aliens turn. Once the faster unit uses up its Time Units (TU) the other unit may then act and then the turn proceeds as normal.

In this way sending in an unit with high reactions first in an attack may be good since he may shoot the alien first before it can respond. If he fails to hit the target though, cannon fodder first may be a better option.

When you said you didn't use TU reserves that surprised me a lot. Opportunity fire during the alien turn can be a huge advantage, I typically saved at least enough for a Snap Shot (least accurate shot). Usually I saved enough for an Autoshot, which is why I used rifles preferentially instead of pistols during the early game. The only times I didn't reserve time was when their was an enemy to shoot in front of me.

I used a different choice when attacking small ships like this though. The safe (and cowardly) way of sitting outside and waiting for the aliens to come out and get shot. Usually I'd also use a proximity grenade (explodes when ANY UNIT comes close). I usually ran in to carryoff valuable corpses/items before using another one which would destroy them however. I like selling stuff to buy lots more things. =)

Proximity grenades are a hugely useful weapon through most of the game but the Collector's edition of X-COM made them buggy (broke them completely?). Proxy grenades could be used as cheap sentries near doorways to let you know if anything was moving from that way. Sometimes the best weapon during base assaults. Just don't use them at terror sites so some stupid civlians don't kill themselves (and get you the blame).

My primary assault force was typically composed of 2 Rocket Tanks (RT) and 6 Soldiers. The RT could level almost anything nearby immediately after leaving the ship and the soldiers could support them. Once the landing area was secure the RTs could serve as scouts/mobile firepower while the soldiers provided more accurate cover fire and scouted less dangerous areas. I typically fielded 3-4 riflemen, 1-2 heavy weapons (At least 1 Autocannon), and frequently 1 Rocketeer.

I typically didn't use many cannon fodder troops and instead used weaponry liberally. Rockets and grenades to take down building fronts/hedges. Demolition charges thrown into buildings which blew open the structures. Laser rifles with autoshot and their infinite ammo could rip buildings apart for no cost.

Nighttime was usually not a problem for me. Incindinary/high explosive ammo for the infantry heavy weapons/rocketeer could start fires that lit up the night for my units to see by. I used rockets and especially the Autocannon to light up the map. The Autocannon could put out a lot of light cheaply (per shot) and was very useful.

Economic-wise I had my Engineers constructing something at all times. I would be selling stuff as it was completed which turned me a tidy profit and could even pay for the Engineers salaries if they worked enough.

I can't seem to remember anymore of what I posted so I'll end here.

Yeah, I knew that about promotions, but when I said I didn't use the TU reserve buttons I didn't mean that I didn't use opportunity shots, just that I didn't trust the AI to do it for me. Never used Proxy grenades -- might have to try those.

Two HWPs? That's another four soldiers you aren't going to be able to use. Furthermore, as I said, HWPs never improve as soldiers -- as soon as you get Heavy Plasma your men are going to be doing significantly more damage. Since the RT has 70 TUs and the Hover Plasma 100, as well as a lot of armor, it's great as a spotter for your men.

I only use Cannon Fodder up until I get personal armor, because at that point they're really no longer neccesary.

Night can be a severe problem on Terror missions. Especially with Crysshalids. You remember those, yes? Hard to forget. I once lost an entire squad to one Crysshalid because I didn't see it coming until it was, as they say, too late.

An engineer producing something in the hand is worth two not producing something in the bush.

Great report :) I once played this game (longgg time ago) but forgot where to get it :( maybe I´ll start playing it again now, "EldritchEvil, I want to fight aliens in XCOM! Make me a soldier. Please try and give me SC classification." or something with good reflexes :p

Wow looks like an excellent report on a classic game that everyone played and loved from days past. I never got into X-Com but I used to go to a friend's house and watch him play it sometimes.

Very cool I will read it later, can't right now.

Hah, nice one. I loved this game back in the day, I played it obsessively. I got really attached to my squad and certain members became real characters. I hated it when they died. I usually had a base squad of 10 guys or so and then 3 or 4 rookies that cycled in and out as they died. I never used tanks because rookies were cheaper for scouting and about as effective. Plus if they live you might get a decent unit out of it.

It's also really fun to get a guy with ridiculous sniping ability and sit him on a building by the landing, then use other units to spot for him so he can unload from miles away.

I'm looking forward to the inevitable encounter with chrysalids.

About 4 years ago I started writing a fanfiction using people from my squad (including elaborate backstory), but it never really got off the ground.

Anyway, good job.

Hehe, by the time I had Plasma Hovertanks and Flying Armor with Heavy Plasma I changed my loadout to 3 HWPs and 2 soldiers. HWPs may be more expensive but they're immune to psychic attacks. Most of the time you don't need more than 6 soldiers on the small missions with the extras mainly sitting around (At least the way I played. I didn't take casualties very often). Of course for Terror missions you do need more soldiers than that but I'd either change the crew or use the Avenger when available.

On UFO crashes and some terror missions you can hold off the landing by your force until daytime so you don't have to fight at night.

Crysshalids, who can forget those fellows. Heavy armor and fast. They were probably the most dangerous terror unit because they can reproduce especially during terror missions with juicy civilians. Last year I was talking to Serephina about the flying blob things that supported the Mutons I think. Can't remember much about them other than they could really get around.

Your tables are slightly ugly. The italics text is hard to read.

But you have a very exciting report.
