Approved, will rate later. Glancing through it looks like a silver to me. You do seem to have real potential though.

thank you kindly^^

I would have thought about having pictures too, but I'm not sure how to take screenshots from my PSP x_x; (Is that even supported on any handheld besides N-Gage?)

Do you know if the HTML editor supports monospaced type? I actually composed everything except the first paragraph with the <tt>/</tt> tags around it, but it didn't seem to work properly when I copy-pasted it into the submission screen x_x;
The <center> tag didn't seem to work either, so I just used an ellipsis instead of my three centered asterisks that I had posted in my LJ version of it.

It's interesting, but the 1337-speak really annoyed me. I could follow what was going on, but I'd really prefer a short guide in the report itself.

i'd rate it a 10, but then again, i just read the Eugenioso/Chileno report(s) so i'm a bit (scratch that.. really) biased =
=....convider says it all -.-

Hiya everyone again ^^;
I guess I should reply to all the new comments, but they seem to have three main topics. I'll reply to them in the reverse order--

Regarding the (lack of) pictures: I don't at the moment have the understanding to post pictures of the things in the report. All of the blue links go to places on the official Coded Arms website with pictures and explanations, if you wanted to look at something while reading it. Also, if anyone knows how to take screenshots in Coded Arms on PSP, please elucidate me and I'll gladly play that scenerio some more and try to get some which apply to the story. And what *is* the use of a book without pictures.. -__-..

Regarding the Leet Speak: I actually thought for a while before putting the leet speak into the report. I had originally written the entire story in normal text, but I couldn't think of a good way to convey the debilitating effects of the virus infection without resorting to some kind of textual gimmick. When playing the game, if your character is infected by a virus, you see that the screen on the PSP gets corrupted in a strange way. To try to reproduce the infected effect that the game uses, I resorted to modifying the actual text of the story. Unfortunately, I wanted to be sure everyone on the internet could actually read it, so I used (mostly)standard 1337. I did my best to tone it down as much as I felt comfortable doing when the in-game effect was easier to ignore (while I was actually playing the last part of the scenerio), but the level of distortion represented in the story at the peak of the leet speak section still leaves the text (much) less corrupted than the virus made my gameplay experience. So I made it an integral part of the story on purpose. I'd be glad to revise it not to include any leet if you can suggest some other way to heavily corrupt the text within standard HTML while still keeping it in character with the Konami game as well as understandable by everyone.

Regarding the short length: Hacker only survived for about three mintues and five seconds before dying on the escape platform when the level was formatted. Most of that was the unwritten action scene which would have been dull to write out if I was actually following exactly what happened in the game, as I did in the rest of the story. Also, it would have to have been in leet, which seemed to be the least favorite property of the story of most who commented, as I worried it might. Since the game playtime was so short, I computed that the report needed to be as well, or else it would be false to the actual battle.

I'm totally glad to hear back from all of you about my first published BR. It's cool that you are all so nice about grading it for me. At first I wasn't sure why there were numbers after everyone's comments.. x__X;

Until next time-- *waves goodbye, then goes back to dreaming*

Interesting indeed...the 1337 adds a really nice touch to it, but I think you could replace it with a weird font type, such as...txt

1337 as a textual gimmick...
sounds good on paper, but its annoying as hell in writing.

txt is one of those obscure fonts that are almost impossible to find. It has a very nice corrupted look to it.

If you want the file, I guess I could email it to you or something.

I believe the font display is based on what's available on the reader's computer, so unless we've all got that font installed, the effect's lost.

If you really, really have to parallel the virus effect in your writing:
- randomly italicise/bold/underline (pain to code by hand/probably annoying to read)
- vary the shading of the text a little bit (pain to code by hand)
- slur your words where it won't hinder understanding too much
- use ellipses/dashes
- or just typeset the entire sequence differently from normal

As for pictures, get yourself a digital camera :)

MidnightGladius - Please do; my address is vaaleron@hot[no spam please]mail.com

NewbEye - I guess I can run some experiments with the different suggestions.. Would you like to readtest the different versions before I post anything again, since this version was so disliked?

Alternatively, do you think a two-column version with a standard writing translation to one side and a preface would be better received?

(I'm not sure how I could push the shutter while my other two hands are busy with the game controls... and my current digital camera isn't the sort that can take pictures of screens that look anything but extremely crappy -_-)

Hey,

When you format your text in alternating caps like this:

"Trying to brEathe stEAdily, to coNcentraTe.. the haZe of noiSe diminishes sliGhtly, and suddenly, numbers cut throuGh Hacker's consciousness like a hot knife throUgh butter,"

it somewhat diminishes the effect of your actual writing. Having read the comments section, I realize it was intentional and mirrored a certain effect, but it nonetheless has the tendency to make your writing (which is good) seem poorer than it is.

I look forward to your future reports!
