Very nice report. The writing flowed well and was easy to follow. I was very pleased with the pics, not flashy or overly showy just simple demonstrate the action you've been writing about. Just my personal preference but I greatly prefer the simple images over the highly photoshopped ones (sorry DD ;p).

As for the games, I'm not much of a 2v2 player and I admit most of the nuances of the game escape me. Therefore I wasn't nearly as enthralled, at least not for the first game, as I would have been for a 1v1. But again, that is personal and 2v2 reports are a nice spice in the BW reports soup. But I will speak a little about how I felt about the games from the report.

Both games sounded like good, for the most part competitive games. I found it somewhat difficult to get through the first game, I'm not sure if it was just because I didn't know the players and don't play the matchup or if the game really didn't interest me or not. I don't think it was the writing though I do believe some more strategy focused information would have been better (though if you don't have that knowledge to impart that's fine). I don't think it was implied in any way in the writing but I felt like the zerg were ahead and going to win for most of the game and it seemed like a big letdown when there was no big swing of momentum. Maybe I'm just too intuned with the "dual Z in 2v2 = auto win" myth.

The second game had me excited and interested until after I knew the outcome. Those last few paragraphs were just not very enjoyable to me and I just sort of wanted it to be over with. Maybe finding a way to bridge the gap between the actual end and the end of legitimate hope would have been better. Or maybe you could have used that time to introduce some more humor or some insight, I'm really not sure.

The writing, as usual, was quite well done. I especially liked:

"A newly completed barracks lights up, indicating that a marine has started playing pinball inside. It's only a matter of time before mYm.Raven takes his balls away and sends him to the front lines."

I cracked up at that. The alt-text overall was nice. I can't really remember any particular point where it greatly helped the report flow or aided the meaning of an image but I somehow thing the report wouldn't have been as good without it. Which is what I always go for with alt-text, anyway.

Now, on to the actual rating. The format was nice, quite pleasing. The games were good, especially the second one. The writing was well done. It all worked together quite well. I'm really torn between giving this an 8 or a 9. I can't find anything really wrong with it that would take it down to an 8, so despite my gut feeling I'm going to give it a 9. Most likely somebody will rate it down anyway and get it to around where I feel it deserves (I'd give it about an 8.7 if we could give tenths).

Now, as for the "rant." You've pretty much said there everything I can think of that needs to be said. I agree wholeheartedly. Thanks for your submissions, your activity, your attitude, and your candor. You've reminded me of why I visit this site and what it's meant to me, and that's a pretty important thing. Hopefully this will put a spark in at least some people (whether new or former reporters) to start writing, and at least as importantly remind people that without comments there would be no reporters.

I tried to read it, but it's 10pm and the background really bothers my eyes. Bright purple? Come on! It looks like a great report, but there is no way imma stare at that color for 30 min :(

Oh, Mr Maar, that would be dishonest.

Sorry, Raider. Bright purple? Is there something wrong with your monitor? I'll change it if other people start complaining, but it looked fine to me.

Tenth on my tenth. Woot!

Nice report! Been a while since the last double header. Still wondering about that first game though - where exactly did the Terran lose control? Zerg were all defend defend defend and suddenly it's over and the Zerg won. Oversimplified, I know.

I actually liked the background, was just an extra touch. 9.

I liked it. Good writing supplemented the meagre pics, and I literally laughed out loud in some parts. Not only that, but when I finished the first game and was composing a comment in my head, bam, a second game followed. Quite a pleasant surprise ;)

9

thought the first game was more of a ramble.

i found myself skipping 3 paragraphs at a time, when you kept putting all those gay political/nerdy jokes inbetween everything. couldnt stand it

2nd game was a lot better in every way(writing, actual game, etc)

ill give you a 7.9.

8 if it had a different color scheme...was kinda hard to look at

At least it was better than that last piece of garbage you paraded here as a "battle report." Then again, that isn't saying much. At least you're improving, though.

Wow, newbeye is getting way more shit in these comments than can possibly appear around a report of this quality. I'm in the process of reading it now, will post more once I'm done.

Ok done reading now. The background was annoying, but I got through it :)

The games themselves looked great, but the flow of action kept getting interrupted by constant humorous inserts. The jokes themselves did not really appeal to me because they broke up the flow of action in very interesting games. I know a lot of reporters on this site believe that a report is not possible without attempts a humor, but I believe that when you are dealing with high level games, the action is more important than the writer's humor. A few jokes here and there are fine, especially when the situation warrants it, but in this report there were jokes for their own sake, which quickly got tedious to me.

9, but constant attempts at humor and purple background bring it down to 7.5 for me.

Ok, I guess I didn't really compensate for the negative feedback, so hopefully you take my comments as constructive criticism. This really was a high-level work, but I did not enjoy it as much as I could have due the aforementioned facts.

I like the rant. I can't possibly start writing reports (well, I wrote one once), but I'll be sure to comment on them!

As for the first game in this report, the problem I had was that it was a surprise when the momentum shifted. It sounds it happened because the Zerg in the top right wasnever really attacked and did a good job conserving his air force, but when the terrans were suddenly losing I was like WTF?

Great reports overall, however.

Re: the background. Thanks for the feedback. Though it wasn't by any means unanimous, I'll keep darker colours in mind for the future.

Re: the games. I started out with the goal of reporting a 2v2, but I really couldn't find anything that was totally outstanding. PGTour, WGTour, GosuGamers, TeamLiquid, YaoYuan... "Good" replays (that are what I feel to be a sufficient length) are all pretty much 1v1 on the sites I know about.

In my opinion, the momentum shift in game 1 was very gradual, not sudden at all. Maybe it didn't come out well in the writing, but the terrans' attacks (I thought) were getting less and less successful over time.

Re: the humour. Dang. I knew I should've learned some DHTML so I could insert a button for the user to hide my pathetic jokes :P Good point about the humour in more professional games, Raider. I guess injecting jokes into that kind of match could be taken as a minor insult to the players. Since I lack expertise in strategy, I try to make up for it by making things funnier. It's a pity more experienced SC players aren't reporting. (That was a big hint to all you lapsed SC reporters!)

Well, we've got Psyonic_Reaver threatening to report, and Agent_of_Sol threatening to comment. If we could get a few more site lurkers to unburrow, we might just get out of this slump...

I have been a Starcraft fan for many years now. I lurk this site whenever I can. I even wrote a fan fic a few years back. This is the only place on the whole internet that you can see SC action without having the game disk handy. WHich means I can read at work. :)
I would battle report, but I don't play against humans. I only play against my computer and reporting on computer games is strictly verbotten.

I still lurk here every once and a while too, and your message is well received. The community is fizzling right now, and that is really too bad, considering that this site was a wonderful source of entertainment for me for so long. Perhaps I will make another report... Really, its the least any of us can do for such a great place.

Also, I thought the reports were great. Professional games or not, I am certainly not a pro, and have no chance to become one, so the humor makes it that much more enjoyable for me. Without it, BRs would seem rather dry, imo. But then again, I was always a fan of the newbie bashing or ffgay type games anyway, which are much more prone to the humor aspect anyway. In any case, well done! Certainly deserving of the 9. :]

when i first visited this site i didn't realize how fortunate br.com really was. i was searching for starcraft porn or something when i came to a link (probably to a report with the words "porn" and "starcraft" in it, so basically it could have been anything) and i read the report but for some reason i was IP banned from the main page and the forums. turns out my parental controls were on since I was using AOL but after reading that one report i was completely hooked on the idea of writing a report on starcraft.

after i got back to my home comp i went to the site and started fanatically reading everything i could. some of it was really bad, but a lot of it was really good and some awesome people were writing and beginning to write back then. i just happened to have SC so i installed it and after a long time searching for the channel, i found it and became an NHer. unfortunately since then i have only done six reports and probably pushed away more regular visitors than anything else.

everything you said was completely true though. all you have to do is stick your head out and try a report, on anything at all, and chances are good that you'll be well recepted since the majority of people who will call you an idiot only go to a subforum of this site anyway. practice makes perfect and you have to actually attempt to write something to get good at it.

Honestly you guys give him way too much shit. His report was quite good. Granted, if it had been a year or two ago when BR.com was much more popular then maybe it would've only gotten an 8, but given the relative lack of good reports now I think this qualified as a 9.

I didn't have a problem with the background. It definitely wasn't bright purple for me and I have the brightness on my monitor jacked up a lot. I actually liked the humor a lot, it was witty and it wasn't all "political/nerdy jokes" as one person put it. However since that one person was "skipping 3 paragraphs at a time" I can understand that if all he saw were those jokes then he wouldn't like it.

It was good

Currently reading reports in reverse order, check what is new occasionally. Great report, this is the first time I have left a comment. You are right about less posts. I have been reading reports from December of 1999, there are four dates on the screen 12/14 12/15 12/16 12/17. The newest reports span almost a year on the screen. If Blizzard releases some new Starcraft game, with new units or control capablities, the interest in reporting may spike again. Thanks to everyone who wrote any report. I have enjoyed most of the ones I have read.

Well, when I first saw the pink/purple lay-out I thought I had to skip another infantile read. But lo and behold! I really enjoyed the first report (haven't finished the second one yet). A very interesting game, I actually like how the balance slowly turned to the Zerg players. A definite 9 in my opinion.
As for the rant: I have been lurking this site for some years now and I must thank it for quite a lot pleasant hours and some internet friends (www.warsmith.org). I tried my hands once on a report and I know how hard it is and how much work to write one. Which makes me appreciate all the more a good report when I see one.
