sweet, first. and i actually read the report, too.
fun read, although not much happened. i was disappointed you didn't detail the battle with the harpies more, but with only a kryss the battle couldn't have been very complicated. if you can get me a working version of uo again (i stopped playing since that shard update broke my version) i might join you on your quest towards greatness, though i don't know how much time i can spare.
as for the additional skill, resisting spells would probably be the best, but that depends on if you can gm it with no money, ship, or friends to cast spells on you for hours. was parrying ever useful or is that just a waste of time? if all else fails, wrestling's disarm ability is probably the funniest for pvp fighting :D |

This is awesome. I used to play this game a looong time ago and I still think that it was the best MMO ever made. Well, maybe two years after launch it was the best.

micro: OSI started putting the whole UO: ML client up on their website for download. go here:

and follow the instructions. you don't even have to patch or anything, it's surprisingly easy to get on.
i wanted to stay away from the descriptions like "i killed the harpy, then looted it. i killed another, then looted it. i healed myself." i'm not very innovative so it's difficult to think of a way to make grinding harpies interesting, so i just skipped the battle and told you the outcome.
i figured out yesterday that there isn't any skill cap on this server. i don't know if i'm happy about that or not. i know for a fact that it's going to make pvp very difficult because i have no idea what to expect from someone. however, it's great for pvm. there are literally unlimited combinations except for necromancy and chivalry - can't really have them both because they rely on karma. also, i bought a boat yesterday (spent almost all of my money) and i'm gonna see what i can do in the way of macroing.
parrying is broken on steve's shard, i think. i could not gain a single .1 no matter what i tried. i might pick it up here and see if it's any good. you should definitely try to play a little bit, it's a good server so far.
krael: i've played WoW and UO and i love UO because it's a bit more open-ended. you have more freedom with your character and it doesn't become as numbingly repetitive. and i am definitely planning to do more of this.

got everything up and running, works like a charm.
unlike your friend's shard, i was able to start with a prefabricated ninja with a number of decent skills. you should have mentioned that abc-uo has those "skill balls": brilliant idea, kudos to whoever designed them. making a smith and poison chemist on this shard should be a cinch.
i don't know where to grind, so i guess creating a character is all i can do for now. i'll try to be on aim sometime so we can get together :O |

| I'll be on tonight. The new player dungeon is a good place to start because it has spearmen that are basically invincible training dummies. Keep in mind that you only get 3 skill balls per account, not per character, so use them wisely. |

I bought this game and thought it was cool, but never played it much. This was like 9 yrs ago. Entertaining and well-written report as you would expect from Mattz. For the quality and ending the BR drought I give it a 9.
Does UO require a monthly fee still? |

JV: I told myself I would change that title before I submitted it. :-( Fixed it now. The server I play on is free, but the official shards still do. They don't really go after the free shards in a legal sense, probably because the game is so ancient they're just happy anyone is playing it at all. Not to mention that there are hundreds and hundreds of free servers, and taking them down would be nearly impossible.
wak: it is a pretty absorbing game, but this server makes it pretty easy to get up to a playable level and not have to grind for hours. it's very newbie-friendly. go ahead and try it! The more BR.comers get on and play, the more entertaining the reports will be, I'm sure. :-P |

Very very nice. I played a little UO back in the day but did not become to absorbed with it, i think i had being horrible at starcraft to worry about at the time.

| I actually logged onto the server you're on and messed around a bit. I had no idea what I was doing, made an archer, started in the middle city, got killed by a Winged Familiar, revived and recovered my corpse, then kill some random animals before logging off. |

I have to say, that this report really did it for me. I have been looking at this site for...a couple of years but i never posted a comment or verified myself. This report did it for me. You are the man, i always thought that reporting MMORPG's would be very hard. BUT YOU MAKE IT LOOK EASY!

Very nice report. The help buttons were a nice touch, and the report on a whole was very informational, but I felt it was sorely lacking in actual action. I'm really hoping there are more parts to this series upcoming so I can see more.

Urmmm someone said the game was free up their, i dont think it is cause i checked out the website a while a go and they had a massive revamp, now its a bit expensive i think. But their is a 14-day trial.

I've always wanted to do a report on an MMO and I never knew how it would turn out. I guess it went pretty well except, as maar said, it is decidedly void of action. New characters don't see a terrible lot of that, trust me. Since I've written this only a month or so ago, I've gotten about 15 more folders of screenshots of about 100 shots each. You would be amazed at the progress I (we ;-) have made. And anyone that plays with me currently.. don't spoil anything! :-) There's plenty of action and some great reporting material, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
maar - you addressed my biggest concern with this report, like I said before. I swear to flying spaghetti monster that all will be better in the next one.

Follow the instructions there. The official UO website technically only offers a 14-day trial if you play on their servers. If you play on ABCUO like me, you just have the download the client itself. DON'T use fileplanet though. They are notorious for being big bags of penis when it comes to downloading shit through them. Download through FTP, install UO but don't run it, then DL/install Razor. Run Razor, put the server info in, and you're off. It's really really easy.
