Sorry for no pics, but I was too busy playing to take them. :)
So I'm looking through the join list again, wondering whether or not a filter is worth it, and just decide that if I want a game, I should make it. I make on Pinwheel, the "take the center or die" map.
So I make what I hope to be a 2v2, but only two other people join. One of them, in all rarity, happens to be female.
Our Hero: Terran, bottom left
Female Opponent: Terran, top left
Male Opponent: Zerg, top right
Now, as I saw the records, I realized that my male opponent was probably a good deal more proficient than my female opponent. I saw an early SCV come my way, and I said "oh okay, he's scoutin, I better make a bunker to stop any rushes", so I do, on my ramp choke. I continue making more marines, and go to tanks, all the while expecting a ground rush from the stronger terran.
I look around, see the bottom right undefended, and say "hell with it, might as well grab it", and I do, making a bunker along with my CC. I get scouted by zerglings a couple of times in the process, but I figure after I bring a tank there, the expand is safe.
Now, as the title declared, I can't spend money. So I've got one starport, a couple of rax, and I have 7000 minerals in the bank. I still haven't been attacked. I make another expansion to the middle-south, and discover that the zerg has two expasions, middle-left and middle-north. I strategically place tanks near my expansion, ready to shoot whatever comes out of the zerg western. They shortly do, blowing quite a few Hydras straight to hell.
The Terran still hasn't expanded and I figure what plots he could be concocting in there. I make a nuke, and expertly bomb all of the zerg's drones at the western expansion into oblivion with a matrixed ghost. I'm feeling pretty good, yeah, I have this one in the bag...
And then Murphy's Law kicks in. An assload of mutas and guardians decides to say hello to my mid-south expansion!
"OH SHIT!!!", I scream, as I click the ally button, and find my assumptions about the identities of the enemy were wrong - the female is the terran and the guy is the zerg!! Crap, no wonder..
I frantically try to make enough wraiths and marines to deal with the threat. After his huge force decimates my first expansion, he razes the second one, I send some wraiths, and they kill a couple of devs, an OL, and some guardians before the inevitable happens- the expansion is razed. During the attack, he appears to be swearing at the other terran. Naturally, I'm cheering her on with "KILL HIM!!!" and assorted other variants.
Then he goes to my main and razes all of it. All of it- my ghosts, marines, and couple of wraiths just have no hope. I build some supply depots around, find the middle-left expansion now vacant (must have been what that zerg was swearing about) hoping the terran will take mercy on me; I share vision with her. Since I have so much money, I decide "might as well", and expand to middle left, trying to make as many buildings as is possible. I actually have a fair-sized town going, and I start making tanks and goliaths like crazy. If I'm going to die, no one is going to have an easy time of it. I also try to take middle south, an expansion that dies fairly quickly. (I forget to what, but I think both of them attacked it at some point.)
The terran walks some Goliaths past my base, and laughing, kills my command center before she is convinced to go kill the zerg. I comsat middle-north at a good time - she is razing the hatchery there. Around this time, the zerg gives up and shares vision with both of us.
I continue to make guys like mad. Tanks, upgrades, missile turrets, everything. I put a bunker outside my choke, and then try to expand in the middle near my base, and build a nuke silo near it.
The terran, of course, freaks out, and blows it up with wraiths. I have some Goliaths, and manage to kill a few of them, but I can't get them there fast enough and I don't have enough comsat. Pissed off, I make a command center and nuclear silo in my own base, and the nuke comes none too soon - she's sieging me with more tanks than I have. I drop a nuke on them and then try to distract her with "there goes your main", but she saw it first. It didn't matter; the nuke dropped as her tanks were unsieging. There goes that threat. I scout for expansions, and the only one she has is middle south. Middle right and bottom right are both still empty.
I take middle again, this time making turrets and adding plenty of tank support. The battle is sure to be long and drawn-out, when she finally says "this game has gone on way too long!" I figure she's going to do something smart, like LEAVING, and I wait a few minutes when she finally does it.
Six dropships fly into my base near my peon line. This is a mistake for three simple reasons.
1. My upgraded tanks are in perfect range to blow away whatever lands.
2. I build a tight base, and other things can also easily shoot at what's coming down.
3. I have Ghosts.
I lock down two of the dropships before she is even able to drop their cargo. When she drops the other four, they are obliterated. Nothing of hers survives, and nothing of mine dies. "Typical female decision", wisecracks the zerg. I'm laughing my head off.
After harassing her expansion with a tank for a while, and still building up and getting 3000 minerals, she says "I'm out of minerals." I sigh in relief, and both of us have fun razing her base after I take out the zerg.
Lessons:
1. DON'T give up.
2. Spend your goddamn money, for fuck's sake!!
3. Pinwheel is a whore of a map for land, and expanding anywhere on it takes serious D.
4. Don't be afraid to manipulate people for wins.
5. Don't drop in tank range, and especially not on someone with Lockdown.
6. Ask for mercy, but don't ever show it. |
