Setting

Once more, somewhat disappointed I went in and out of several different channels, looking for a game to observe. And, again, I found mothing. Besides I was in the mood for a little more action. I mean, sure, observing games is fun, but it's just not exciting as the thrill of actually experiencing the fight.

I created a game called "Newbie needs a lesson" in hopes that I might get a more experienced player. I can tell you now, be careful what you wish for. A rather good player entered. As I remember his ladder rating was somewhere are 1300. It's too bad that mine is 1020. Thank god I chose this to be a melee game.

We chatted for a minute or two before the game, rather rare considering most Battle.Net junkies are pretty rude. He was even polite enough to say "Gl and Hf" before we began.

Early Build Orders

With the trusted denizens of Auir under my command I started a rather normal build order. I sent my 7th Probe to warp in a Pylon and the scout for the enemy. My 9th servant from Auir built a Gateway, the 10th an Assimilator followed soon after by a Cybernetics Core as soon as the first Gateway popped into play.

By now my scout had found the enemy who had let his fate be determined by luck and the telltale sign of the purplish creep told me that my opponent had randomed to zerg. I saw that his second Hatchery, a Spawning Pool, and an extractor were already morphed in, and that a Hydralisk Den was being mutated at that moment and several Drones were busily clawing at the tough mineral structures. The Probe however was not fast enough to escape and was killed by some previously burrowed Zerglings.

I had seen about 5-6 Zerglings had un-burrowed to attack my Probe and I thought that I could perhaps get an easy win by attacking quickly. I sent 5 well-armed and completely loyal Zealots toward his base and I grouped them at his choke point. I charged forward only to run into about 12 Zerglings and I didn't think it was too bad. However, he had some Zerglings that were burrowed at his choke and I was surrounded and, sadly, the Zealots had no hope.

I left them for dead since I could not get them out of there due to the fact that they were surrounded. I concentrated my efforts back home and soon a second Gateway, and a Citadel of Adun were warping in and were quickly followed by a Templar Archives where the research needed to cast Psi Storm was available. Soon I had a few Zealots, several Dragoons, and 3 High Templar ready to crush all those that opposed the Protoss.

I also decided about this time that I was strong enough and ready to expand. I moved a probe down to my natural and started warping in a Nexus, and 2 Pylons. My probe was accompanied by a High Templar, and 4 Dragoons until I has some Photon Cannons warped in. That fact reminded me that I had better put of a forge. DOH!!! I quickly warped one in and when finished I dotted my main and expansion with well placed Cannons.

I remembered from a previous game the weakness that I had learned about the Zerg. They were truly defenseless against splash damage since they usually traveled in large numbers. A Robotics Facility soon warped in along with a Robotics Suppory Bay for upgrades.

Another brave Probe decided to try his luck to see what the Zerg were up to. I ran quickly to his expansion and saw the Drones working quickly to gather their resources and it was guarded by a Queen, several Mutalisks and probably several burrowed units, some of them were Lurkers, as my second dead Probe soon found out. Needless to say an Observatory was quickly produced.

Into a speed-upgraded Shuttle went a Dragoon, a High Templar, and a Probe, because I decided that a little more cash would be advisable. I took off toward the south-east island, and thought it wouldn't be found because it was off the beaten path. I warped in a Nexus, a couple of Pylons, and an Assimilator, and when the Pylons were done 3 cannons joined in for defense. My Shuttle decided to go scouting and found a fairly well established base at the 6:00 position and I noticed a full wing of Mutalisks (which just happened to kill my Shuttle) and several hydralisks standing guard.

After seeing so much air at his 2 expansions I decided that some A couple Stargates would be nice so I warped 2 of them in, one at my main and another at my expansion and pretty soon I was producing Dragoons, High Templar, Scouts, and Corsairs in bulk.

After I decided that I was pretty well off I decided to amuse myself by placing a matrix of Photon Cannons on the cliff overlooking his natural and my High Templar had fun by Psi Storming all the drones they could reach. My fun soon ended however when the High Templar was killed by Spawn Broodling and three Overlords filled with Hydralisks attacked. I did however come out on top in that resource battle. I decided that I had maybe killed about 7-8 Drones and I had brought in another High Templar to Psi Storm the incoming Hydralisks and Overlords and I saw that I had killed about 9 of them with 3 well placed Psi Storms. I thought that 3 Photon Cannons, 1 Pylon and 2 High Templar was worth killing 7-8 Drones, about that number in Hydralisks and a bonus Overlord.

I was totally unprepared for what happened next. I had my defense mostly concentrated at my main base and a little less at my natural. However, my second expansion at the island only had a Dragoon, a High Templar and 3 photon cannons. I heard that my base was under attack and quickly tapped the space bar. About thirty or so Mutalisks were screaming into my base and they had targeted and killed my High Templar before I had even arrived on the scene. He was definately going to pay for this.

I knew at this time that I was setback a little more on minerals than he was, so I decided to expand to 9:00. I transported 4 Probes, 2 High Templar, and 6 Dragoons to this spot was well as a full fleet of mixed Scouts and Corsairs for a little air support on the way over. That expansion was quickly up and running.

After I had more minerals and vespene coming in I decided that it was well time for a full fledged attack. I grouped outside his base with 18 Dragoons, a full wing of Scouts, about 8 zealots and some High Templar support with a couple observers to look for borrowed units as well as lurkers. I quickly ran in using hotkeys with my army and his natural was quickly demolished. I thought, geez this guy is 1300 too. I went up to his main and ran into about 3 groups of Hydralisks and several Ultralisks. The most devastating part of the whole thing was, I saw about 40 or so Mutalisks attacking my 9:00 expansion.

I swore several times and disengaged my army from his base but they fleeing units were pummled by Hydralisk Spines and there were deep rents in their armor and shields from the Ultralisk blades. I was quickly destroyed.

At my 9:00 expansion I had managed to kill about 12 of the Mutalisks with Psi Storm quickly before I told my army to retreat. It was right here, when I knew that my opponent was owning me.

Shortly after my 9:00 base fell all the Mutalisks he had been attacking with charged into my natural and I fought them as best as I could. I used Psi Storm, Corsairs, Reavers and Dragoons on the Hydralisks that were pouring in but there were just too many. My natural fell and they army was soon pouring into my main. I decided not to be cheesy and try to hid pylons and I conceded defeat and left the game. Congratulations to the guy who beat me (can't remeber his name just a bunch of ASCII characters)

There wasn't much in the way of lessons learned in this game. Mostly I just needed to protect myself from the Mutalisks that he had and a good strategy for Zerg: If you have part of your forces inside your base where the enemy can see them it works great when used with burrowed units that pop up from behind to surround them so they can't run away. My beginning Zealots and also most of the rest of my forces from my major attack were pummeled this way. Once again GG to my opponent. And I tell you anothe thing, This newbie sure learned his lesson.
