Hello. I'm a newbie, both in AOE2 and in writing BRs.
Hope this game can bring you fun. But if you really don't
have much time, skip this BR. :) Present tense is used
in most parts of this BR to simplify the writing.
After some team game that used by my friends and I as
a way to pratice together, I start a 1 on 1(computer)
game to examine my improvement. The major settings are:
random map, hardest level, standard resources and victory
condition, normal map view, 200 population limit. Knowing
that AI likes rush, I chose Teuton, which is one of the only
two races that defined as defensive civilization in the
game.
The Game:
In my practice with my friends, we usually choose high
resources to quickly get into mid-game. This time, I have
to slow down the steps. With the given scout cavalry, I find
luckily the map is island style. As a builder style player,
I concentrate on peasants and food. I advance to Feudal Age
immediately after I get 500 food. This enables me to
defend with towers, but the island is too large to be fully
secured with towers, so I begin to invest on navy(later
I find out that fleet in early stage is very difficult to
stop transports), while preparing for Castle Age.
After I get two galleys, I begin to search enemy coast line.
To my surprise, it has only a few fishing boats, although
it has towers on the shore to prevent harassment from
sea. When I almost finish the around-island scout, the
warning bell rings, enemy has already landed! Fortunately,
only five infantrymen come(later, from the record I get to
know that it has dozens of these but few transport), and
they just attack my house(I feel the AI is not bad for such
a complicate game, at least computer usually attack
peasants first) instead of peasants. I quickly build up
a tower and stop the raid with the help of garrisoned
town center. Although I noticed when it advanced to Feudal
Age, this skirmish shows I'm still ill-prepared for landing
attack.
Several towers are soon set up, and galleys are called back.
As expected, enemy's transports never stop coming from
that time. A forest near shore proves to be a key factor
that minimized my casualty, the enemy's attention is drawn
by my coastal guard ships, and invades fail soon one after
another.
During the combat I've collected quite some resources and
advance to Castle Age. I found a relic on shore at enemy's
island, so a monk is sent to steal it. A bad move is that
I use "landing" command of transport and then busy doing
other things. When I see that monk again, he has already
become a corpse surrounded by near 30 enemy soldiors,
near the relic. To stop invades, I build a castle at the
point that enemy come every time(it's strange that AI
is smart to land from behind, but likes to use the same
point every time). This is quite effective and no transport
was able to put off troops after that, although many comes.
Since I'm quite safe now. I advance to Imperial Age without
any delay. After 5 cannon galleons and 10 galleons
are built, I feel I've won, it's just a matter of time.
I bombard the coast until nothing is within my fire range.
Soon, two trebuchets landed, backed by my fleet. It's
surprising that many infantrymen appear and my trebuchets
are almost destroyed before the enemy wave ceases.
To give my trebuchet more protection, some hand cannoneers
are trained and sent out.
These hand cannoneers work quite well, until they fall
down before numerous enemy troops. Four trebuchts are also
destroyed in the turmoil. I suddenly find I have lots of
stone at that time, so I order many peasants to quit their
work and build a castle near the enemy town. This method
is very cost-effective and the game is virtually over
after the castle is set up, although it still takes me
quite some time to wipe off the remanent enemy.
Finally, I win my first 1 on 1(computer, hardest) game of
AOE2.
Post-game:
I watched the record of the game and get some points.
1. build barrack early and build at least a medium size infantry if not on island map. AI likes to build non-stop
militia in the beginning, that's why they usually don't
advance to Feudal Age quickly.
2. AI likes to land at the same point some where at your
back every time.
3. Unlike some other games, tower takes long time to
build and can't attack adjacent enemy in early game, and
peasants will run away from their work if enemy attacks
them, even when they are building tower or wall!
4. Cannon galleons are very powerful and have a very long
range.
OK, this is my first BR, hope it's not too bad.
