Prologue:

Clan Nightbreed has recently recruited me. As usual in such ventures, I was required to change my name. I changed it to ~Nb~Grimjack (Grimjack being a long gone comic book hero I particularly admired). Just as AQD3 is reporting his adventures on the ladder, I have decided to report my adventures within the clan.

Mainly a Vanilla SC clan, they recruited me thanks to a 2v2 game I played with a guy named ~Nb~StarDawg. Recruiting Officer Countess Ash gave me the lowly rank of squire after a brief interview and off I was sent. My first mission is to gain 10 wins to get the rank of foot soldier.

First Blood:

Map: Challenger

Players:

~Nb~Grimjack randomed as brown zerg at the northern position
Neiltrain chose blue Terran at the southern position

Spawning in, I immediately called for a drone and cloned my drones to separate mineral patches. I send my overlord to hover over my choke to provide proximity alert in case of cheese builds or off bunkers (both very real possibilities on challenger). I first scout with the extractor trick drone finding a barracks and depot. I decide mass lings would be nice so I get a pool and second hatchery.

My drone scout, which I had kept near his choke for a later second pass, comes under fire as my pool comes up. He dies, but not before advising me of two bunkers being built at the choke. I begin to doubt my ling idea and start considering hydras however I already have lings morphing so...

A flash of blue in the mini-map tells me my overlord has spotted enemy scouts: Only 2 marines. The lings make short work of them. I put a sunken close to my mineral line for some defense and send my control group of lings over to his choke. I plan is to burrow them to delay any troop movement while I tech to what has now become my main strategy… The Hydra drop.

As I morph the two Hatcheries to lairs, the lings notice that the enemy has 2 bunkers but no supply depots in front and some space in between. Famished, they beg me for a chance at SCV meat and I agree. Bypassing the bunkers, 6-7 lings managed to make it to the mineral line where they feasted unmolested on SCV flesh until he got over his surprise and emptied his bunkers to kill the lings.

The lings had not died in vain, I knew I had bitten and bitten deep. I got a den and started pumping out hydras while researching both ventral sacs and pneumatic. I sent 2 lings to his choke and this time I did burrow them in order to keep an eye on him.

“Evolution complete!”

Grinning from ear to ear as I load up 4 overlords worth of hydras, I morphed some more for defense in case of a drop of his own and loaded and drone into the another Overlord to expand on the island on my right. My overlords closely follow the right edge of the map as they make their way down to the enemy base. I unbury one of the lings and send him against the choke defense. He is greeted only by marine fire. Good, he is late on tanks.

Skirting the right edge of his base, the overlords spot no danger. I then typed “GG” and send my Lords on a mass unload straight in the mineral line.

The rest of the game consists of me running around the map to kill his floating buildings.

Lessons:
1) You get up and go for coffee when you hydra drop.
2) Bypass bunkers if he has bad build placement.
3)Protecting your choke is good but only if your mineral line is relatively safe. best bet for terran is an early wall in followed alter by choke defense when things become serious
4)Keep it short, bloody and to the point. Mass hydras at his choke would have just dragged on the fight.
5)SCVs is good eating…

Cheers,
Grimjack/MrFurious
