Again, another battle report without pictures, but grabbing pictures in the middle of an intense battle is the last thing on my mind. Plus, I have horrible computer skills.
My opponent tonight was a korean by the name of lee!lee, a player ranked about 1090 at the start of our match. I had spent a while looking for someone who wasnt 2-0 and rated 1085 (a sure sign of somebody damn good or a hacker), or one of the top 10 from last season on their way to the top (I recognized his name, and he was 10-0/3-0 rated 1095, and no way was I gonna be victim #4!). So, I was pleased to find lee!lee whose record made it seem that he deserved his 1090 rating. Lee!lee picked protoss and spawed at 6, Judge~Holden (me!!) picked terran and spawned at 9. Thess are, without question, my favorite positions for battling toss on Temple.
My bo was as follows:
8: Depot
10: Rax
11: Refinery
14: Depot
18: Factory
19: Factory
And yes, this did mean halting SCV production to speed up factories, but I wanted to test the impact this had on the game. Lee scouted my at about supply 17, and I held off on building the factory till his probe had returned home (no point in giving away my intentions).
My own scouting probe revealed a standard bo for a DT/techer: pylon, gateway, assimilator, core. A quick return trip about a minute later confirmed his plans: a citadel was warping in. Basically, I knew it would be a rush to mine the chokes before his DT began their rampage. My first 6 vultures mined his choke thoroughly, then went into his base to see what was what. They managed to kill 2 zealots before dying, but gave me a valuable piece of recon: the far side of his mineral line was unprotected...
I couldnt take advantage of this just yet though... back at home, a single DT had slipped through, and was attacking my SCVs. I had 3 vultures sitting around, and with a bit of careful micro (and after having moved my SCVs away!) I laid some mines, sacrificing a vulture to kill the DT.
Next, it was time to give those boys on bikes some extra go juice: I began the speed upgrade. When I had 8 vultures, I remined his choke (some enterprising zealots had thought they would get free run of my base... until the minefield changed their tiny protoss minds). Then moved to the weakspot at the far left of his peon line. I stuck my vultures on hold, and let them do their thing. They killed about 10 probes before a combination of psi storm and zealots killed them off.
I thought I had the upper hand at this point, so I expanded naked (trusting in mines to halt any land advances) to my natural, build a starport, another factory, an armory, and 4 more vultures. I started to research seige too, and sent the 4 vultures to the canyon between our bases. Just as the canyon started to narrow, they laid 8 mines, then took up position outside his choke, on the friendly side of the minefield, in a "hold" position. 2 scvs also went to the canyon to build a depot and an ebay.
This is the reason why I like this starting position so much for terran: I sent 4 tanks to the canyon, floated the ebay for sight, and then began pounding on his tech. A continuous supply of tanks from my factories, and a single dropship, allowed me to set about 8 tanks onto his plateau, supported by the four tanks below. The combination of the mines, the depot wall in, and 2 turrets, makes this position pretty much unapproachable by toss.
He may have been korean, but he knew one english word: "fuck!". He must have realized his base was in big trouble. A pair of psi storms killed 2 tanks on his plateau, but more were on the way. I a fit of desparation, he set his entire army against my naked expansion: 6 goons, 6-7 zealots, and 3 temps. Mines killed all but one goon, 2 zealots, and 1 templar. I love my mines. His love for my mines was probably not as great at this point...
I ordered a few tanks to attack move towards his choke, and this finished off the remainder of his forces. I ended up with ten tanks in his base, and they made quick work of the rest of his base.
Lee confirmed (for me) that most koreans are pretty good guys. As the last of his building were being destroyed, he said "good". I quickly replied (didnt want to piss him off and get a disc...): "me chobo". Lee said, "no, good"... then, as his last building died, "you gosu".
Another victory for terran vs. toss on temple! Strangely, I am starting to fear this matchup less than playing against zerg. (I just hate terran vs. terran.) This victory moved me to 1118, with a record of 6-1.
Lessons learned:
- Mine a lot. No such thing as too many mines. I think I made about 20 vultures in that game, and laid 3x that many mines. I killed a ton of his units with mines... maybe 10 zealots, 2 temps, 6 goons, and 1 DT? Mines are your friend. Use them profusely. Lay them in bunches. When they are detonated, go lay some more!
- The canyon based tank climb rocks. It is very very very difficult for toss to stop. They key is mines before a depot wall in, 2 turrets, and a floating ebay for sight.
- Once again, I built nothing at my choke... Heartcutter may feel differently, but for me, I am more comfortable not walling in my choke with depots and a rax... I just like to build everything right close to my cc.
As always, please resond with your comments and suggestions on the strategies and tactics of myself and my opponent.
