PART 3: PHOENIX
Prologue
I had not played in awhile. My ISP was giving me some serious bad service and I was getting a intolerable number of disconnects. I decided to change service providers and in the interim played a lot of single-player Rainbow six instead.
Upon my return, I was surprised to discover that we had been at war with clan Dark Trinity and are allied with the Pirate Militia (PM). I got my tenth win, thus rising to the level of foot soldier, in a 3 v 2 game on alcatraz where me (~Nb~Grimjack in the clan) and ~Nb~Zappata stood up to ~Nb~Ash, ~Nb~Puppydawg and Silent-PM.
Relaxing in the allied forces channel, I was challenged by CaptNemo-PM to 1 v 1 on BGH. Being the challenged I exercised my right to choose the field of battle and I chose….. The Lost Temple.
Game info:
Map:
The Lost temple
Players:
~Nb~Grimjack (Myself) randomed as protoss at 9:00
CaptNemo-PM chose protoss at the 12:00 positon
Special rules:
As we are in allied clans, we must ally at the end when one person says uncle.
Warping in.
As mentioned in the game info, I got the 9:00 position. I went for a pylon on seventh and scouted with the same probe in clockwise fashion.
I found him before I had even warped in my first gate.
I was able to get a good look at his base and saw 2 gates warping in he started attacking me with a probes so I left. I parked my probe near his natural to make a second run later on, but his first zeal ran down the ramp and finished my probe off.
I have to tell you guys I had a sinking feeling this guy could out produce me. So, I stayed with a single gate and went instead for a cy-core then a rob fac. My early units stood guard at the ramp (One zeal on hold flanked by two goons).
That's when I made my first mistake.
I built a shuttle but forgot to build the support bay until the shuttle was almost there. I cursed and compensated by warping in more goons and sending them to my choke.
My reaver finally comes online and I load him up along with a goon in the shuttle which I had been using a scout. My worst fears were confirmed as I saw the number of zealots he had in his possession. I send the shuttle in by an west side of his base and I begin producing a shuttle back at base as well as a Citadel of adun as I know that only templar can save me from the sheer number of units he has.
My reaver lands with the goon and starts delivering his cargo. Zealots start coming in like there is no tomorrow so I just pop my units back into the shuttle go to the other side, rinse and repeat. Eventually however his goons start coming out and pose a real threat to my shuttle so I bugged out.

Meanwhile, I had been busy at my base. I built a forge and had expanded to the west island. Why not my natural? Because I realized I couldn't wage a ground war with him. My goal was to get extra income to fight him off giving him the impression of a win while a super-secret air force facility was being built and would hopefully surprise him. I built my templar archive there as well just in case my main bought it.
I must be psychic.
Downfall
His first attack came in mixed goons and zeals. He had a lot, however the high ground and my templars gave me a fighting chance and I held my ground and routed him.
I took what force I had left (around 8 goons+ temp) to his choke and lost that force to masses of goons. At this point I am wondering if he has expanded so I send a shuttle with 2 reavers looking around for an expansion I also send hallucinated shuttles in his main to see what's up. I found an expansion at the 3:00. My reavers killed all his probes and demolished his nexus and assim. He made no move to defend it so that must mean…
My ramp was under attack.
This time the high ground proved to be no advantage at all and I realized he must have an observer to help him spot for his goons. My troops fought valiantly, and templars stormed all but in the end he just bowled over me with sheer numbers.
I had my shuttle with the reavers but I knew it was no use, I let my main fall, really happy that my expansion was going full tilt.
Rising from the ashes
Now at my island, I had the beginning of my super secret fleet, 8 scouts. I already had the speed upgrade and +1 weapons, however putting a cy-core on this tight island meant loss of space and I decided to forego further upgrades until I had resettled.
My strategy was clear, I had to keep him from expanding since my hallucinated shuttles had seen he had mined out his main. So I send my scouts on constant patrols looking for signs of economic activity. I tried to expand myself but I could see the blur of the observers following my shuttle. I resigned myself to using only air and settled on eastern bottom island.
It would be only a matter of time before he expanded and If i couldn't stop him he would get air units and shuttles pretty soon and that would be it. My scouts find a nexus and a handful of drones at the 6:00 start. Now I know he has lot of goons left because I saw them whenever I skirted his main so I am wondering why there is no defense here, at least 5-6 goons. Anyway i start killing his probes when he says <>I"Please don't, I have no money left. I need the money otherwise I can't kill you and it will be a draw". After downing his nexus my scouts go on a rampage. He has no money to buy another nexus so I fly by his ramp and just stalk any probes that leave to mine the natural and return to his nexus. Soon he has no probes left.
Thats when my 2 carriers began attacking his westside. He saw that I had two expasnions, and that pretty soon these two carriers would become 6, then 8, then 12. So he conceded the game and we allied up as per rules.
Lessons.
1) when going for early reaver, the build order must be tight and fast, without that support bay blunder I would have gotten him way earlier and then this would have been an entirely different game.
2) I should have used canons to defend my choke right after the initial drop, I had the money for it, I just didn't think. Canons and templars are kick ass defense
3) He should have brought defenses when he expanded, I caught him with his pants down two times where I should have lost instead.
4) working with graphics is fun but there is alot to learn...
Cheers,
