Macro Versus Micro

This is my second battle-report, the first was under the alias [A-laget]Grogg. The reason why I selected this game was because of the typical nature, why the game structure favors certain tactics or races on certain maps.

Zera:) challenged me 1v1 on ladder. I agreed and the map was Lost temple. I selected zerg and Zera choosed the notorious race of random. Game on.

Early game
I started at 3 o clock quickly cloned my drones to mine and sent the overlord straight for the north expansion hoping to find him early, putting aside drones just for scouting is a pain for Zerg.

Overlord at 8, hatchery close to my first at 11, pool next to my new hatchery at 12, gas at 13. Now I more or less gambled that my opponent also was Zerg, in that case I wanted to be sure that I could build mutalisks early on.

While my spawning pool was cooking a shiny sleek probe comes up, sniffing at my buildings, peeing on them and takes a really good glance at my base then decides to attack a drone. A sunken colony was placed protected by my buildings. Now probes is better than drones and the probe got in the first shot, so two members of the swarm was ordered by a newly built overlord to retaliate. The overlord was then sent to the south expansions cliff. As acid started to melt down the shiny surface, the probe fled only to return to harrass in a different location. A new drone was assigned to attack back, the probe fled only to return again, but this time 2 zerglings was spawned and the probe ran away for good.

My first overlord reported back that the north position was empty so it moved towards the west base and two zerglings was ordered to search out the enemy. west was also empty. A couple of zealots heavily argued which part of a zergling should be kept as trophe as it tried to run up the south positions ramp. Zera:) draw the first blood.

Meanwhile I had done nothing but built drones, expanded to my natural and upgraded the hatchery one step. The last of my scouting zerglings was sent to his natural only to find a nexus being warped in. Determined to punish him for expanding so fast, a total of three zerglings attacked. The lings discovered a pylon, three cannons and three zealots guarding the new base...I swear that I heard zergblues sounds when they were ordered to stop. Despite of the latest research, zerglings CAN have emotions. Additional ten speedlings was sent to contain him instead.

Hey!
A spire was put down and suddenly the sleek acidburnt probe that harrassed me earlier appeared and started to scout my main again! It must have hidden itself in a forgotten part of my plateau, overlords all over the area started to scout for nearby zerglings but they all were positioned to contain the protoss expansion.

Twice had the cunning little probe taken a peek at my main and this time he knew for sure what I was about to build. To safe my face I canceled the spire, and started a hydralisk den instead, only to erect the spire in the north part of my base, protected from scout vision by my sunken colony. Two zerglings started to chase the probe who ran in a circle atleast 5 times before dying to the sunken. If Zera:) lost this game, I knew his probes could atleast qualify for Grand Prix.

A couple of minutes went by, a few more lings reinforced the containment but the majority of the larvaes was morphed into drones. When the spire was finished, larvae began to morph into mutalisks.

When I had a total of eleven mutalisks I felt comfortable to expand again, this time to the north's natural. Additional seven mutalisks were created before I ran out of buffered gas.

Macro vs Micro round 1
The eleven mutalisks flew into his main, near his workers only to see a photon cannon. In this case you have two viable options...Sacrifice a mutalisk or two just to attack the probes anyway or take out the cannon in a volley or two and attack them safely. I choosed the later. The cannon died swiftly only scratching the skin of a mutalisks, another cannon which I didn't see first started shooting, but this time I ignored it flew a little closer to the workers and immediately retreated permanently as a hoard of dragoons and templars appeared.

Losses: One photon cannon.
Afterthought: Wrong move from me.
counter: Expand again at the 9 o clocks natural.

An overlord stationed at my mains natural ramp suddenly reported that a shuttle had unloaded a dragoon and a probe, the overlord was chased away and the probe began the warping of a pylon. My early strike force of eleven mutalisks came to rescue just when the first of the five photon cannons was finished, Zera:) saw the impossible in this situation and canceled the rest. The shuttle fled to safety.
Crackling upgrade for my zerglings was old news and when I saw the powernewbie tactic my first move was to research transport incase my mutalisks had failed.
I had a new plan now. Tons of cracklings was built and full control group of mutalisks was stationed at the cliff of his natural.

Macro vs Micro round 2
Dragoons and templars isn't really that good against cracklings. And a total of 88 cracklings was lifted into his main supported by six mutalisks. Fortunate for him, I didn't pay much attention to the drop because my mind had been taken over by the Overmind and was now 100% aimed for Macromanagement!

Attack: 11 overlords, 88 cracklings, 6 mutalisks
Defence: small number of cannons, X dragoons, X templars, X zealots.

Losses: 1 overlord, 88 cracklings, 6 mutalisks.
Losses: 1 zealot, 2 dragoons, houndreds of templar energy.

However The Swarm had just started, The Swarm was no confident that The Swarm had won. The Swarm didn't even bother to expand anymore. The Swarm, swarmed...

Macro vs Micro round 3
New 2-2 cracklings was built and redirected just outside his natural. If you remember the full control group of mutalisks I had at his cliff, they were now morphed into 0-1 guardians. The cracklings charged straight into his cannons, zealots and templars. While the twelve, this time slightly spread out guardians backstabbed him.

The Swarm failed again, the guardians retreated damaged. Only to attack again along with another wave of 3-3 cracklings. Yet again the Swarm failed and half the guardian fleet was burnt out of the sky by psi-storms. But the third wave, oh yes, glory to the Swarm, Succeeded. The expansion had been razed.

Macro vs Micro final round
New waves of cracklings were sent, trying to run up the ramp, and was quickly killed along with the rest of the guardians, but the damage was done, Zera:) could not recover, psi-storms isn't endless and the ramp fell to the Swarms claws also.
As cracklings razed the protoss fortress and the sky was filled with mutalisks, we exchanged 'gg'

Afterthoughts:
Despite of all perfectly executed actions, tricks and moves he did. He lost. To be honest I almost wish he didn't because i'm a micromanagement player at heart also, but the game mechanics and maps forces me to realize the simple fact: Macro > Micro and Zerg > Protoss on LT.

Later he explained that my hydralisk den didn't really fool him, and dragoons/templars is a good combo against mutalisks but I noticed several observers also, which is most useful against lurkers. So I wonder if my lair+hydra den didn't fool him into beliving a lurker push was imminent anyway.

My Macro moves wasn't perfect though, I constantly had a surplus of 1-2000 minerals and gas and should have put up 9+ hatcheries instead of my 5. But when I saw the game was going my way, I kinda stopped building probes.

Good game Zera:)
