Hello Geeks

Map: Lost Temple
Type: Ladder
Players: supercooldude-zerg 3:00
{MS}Marine or something like that
-random to zerg 6:00

It has been a long time since I played a game worth reporting, but this one certainly was. I have switched to this handle for ladder since 'corelli' got too many losses and disconnects so no one would play me 8(. I really don't mind losing a good game, it is just that when you actually win it would be nice to get credit for it once in a while...oh well, life on bnet.

First of all you need a little background on this particular day. My friend Dennis, was in town, affectionately known as 'jeezumcrow' in these parts. This was first time to meet someone that I knew solely from the internet, well that is other than that sweet little g...oh this is a public board isn't it. Never mind. I knew that it would be cool and I was really looking forward to meeting him since he is a great guy and a pretty damn good player especially at zerg. In fact, I think he is just about the best zerg player I know.

Anyway...we bummed around New York, walked over the Brooklyn Bridge, ate some sushi (Den informs me that raw fish is very good for hand-eye coordination), and then I couldn't resist. "He Dennis, I know that we are in the Greatest City in the world, but..." We went back to the homestead and got hooked up to bnet. I just had to see him in action.

He wanted me to play first, so... this is the game that followed, Super vs. Marine with Den consulting over my shoulder. I was a little nervous...

I started with at 3:00 with the creep. Build order was the following:

9 2nd hatchery in natural
8 spawning pool
7 ol

then I made an almost fatal mistake. After I had gotten back to 9 drones, my ol popped out. Now instead of building some nice cute defensive zerglings, I got greedy...which I usually am and I built 3 more drones.

just as they finished I started a creep colony or two--one at my main and one at my natural. And that is when the shit hit the fan. Six zerglings rushed into my main. Yikes. My pants are totally down. I danced I juked I jived...I made an additional creep colony, I attacked with my drones, I ran with my drones. I produced some lings.

I can't remember exactly how many waves of lings it was-maybe just two, maybe three, nothing too big, maybe 6-8 lings at a time. But the long and short of it was that after 5-6 minutes of starcraft I have 3 drones, two hatcheries, and a couple of sunkens. I haven't even scratched this guy. Basically I am dead.

Well not only am I dead, I have humiliated myself in front of my good friend Dennis, who has become very quiet in back of me. This whole meeting friends over the internet thing is starting to seem like a mistake. Doh!

Soo...what do I do. There is really nothing I can do. I just start building drones, and lings, and more drones, and lings. And I keep waiting...10-20 lings in the next 2 minutes would have wiped me out. I put up another sunkern The lings still haven't come. Soon I am sort of getting back in it. I've got 20 lings a couple of sunkens. I scout him every once in a while...he hasn't expanded and he has some lings but not many more than I do...what is he up too? Marine has floated a couple of ols in my direction. I figure he is coming in for the muta rush so I build the evo chamber and put up a couple of spores. Not anything great but it is all I can do. Atleast the spores force Marine to move his ol to the edge of my base.

Den speaks up, "You should start some gas." So I do. Both at my natural and my expansion. The attack still hasn't come...I can't figure it out.

I get cocky and start another hatch at the natural of the 12:00 since he has an ol stationed on the plateau. I warp my hatch into a lair, and then in a rare stroke of brilliance, I put up a spire behind my minerals out of sight range of his ol. I also build another hatch at some point because my minerals are building up, in spite of producing constant lings and drones.

Finally Marine's intent becomes clear. Morphing Guardians appear over the horizon of my natural. My spire finishes just in time...

Scourge to the rescue. I had a little gas built up I guess because I was able to produce 20 or so scourge very rapidly. Marine also had a devourer and a couple of mutas in the mix as well. I microed a little. Master Den telling me in my ear that it only takes 2 scourge per guardian. Well...learn something every day. If the accompanying air support had been a little stronger I might have been in trouble, but I was able to take care of this little problem easily.

All of a sudden I was right back in it. In his jump up to tech, Marine had neglected even to expand. My next ling found the morphing creeps colonies forming at his natural.

CounterAttack!!!
I ran my fifty or so lings into his base and though he was able to kill of them by moving his drones into the gap between his sunkens and a couple of evo chambers he had put up in front of them. I killed what was left of his offensive forces and I took a couple of sunkens and some drones out as well.

I started amassing another attack outside his base. I think I had gotten the speed upgrade for the lings by this point but I wanted more...much more. So I laid down another evo chamber and started a queen's nest and got melee and carapace upgrades working. I sent of couple of scourge around the map to see what was going on.

Now I had 2 expansions going full bore and mins were poring in. I was able to get another 30 or forty lings together and they pored into the natural taking out everything. 10 or so were pounding on the hatch when...

the spikes started leaping from the ground...crap.

Now I am many things...but the god of Starcraft micro I am not...so the thought of having to coordinate ol's with my attack-all in front Master Den-was making me sweat a little. But there was nothing else to do. I started a Hive at home. And I must have already gotten the ol speed upgrade at some point cause I knew I might want a little tropical island all to myself one day. I've always thought that would be nice.

I started grouping another set of lings in front of his natural at 6:00 and I sent an ol to watch for the evil spiders. That is when the push started. He started moving his lurkers forward leap-frogging them toward my base. Scourge started the kamakaze attacks on my friendly neighborhood blimps.
I was having a crisis of conscience at this point whether to continue with my crackling plan, or to start with hydras...definitely better against lurks. When I voiced my concern...Master Den set me straight, "You have too many lings. You can take him"

With this voice of confidence I clicked the crackling upgrade on my lings and got another set of upgrades at the chambers. I started producing like mad from my hotkeyed bases. "10,s,z;9,s,z;8,s,z;7,s,z" You know the drill. I still had lings outside his base...but they were scattering as they tried to avoid harm. I click to send another ol or two as I had recently replaced the ones that had been dive bombed. That is when Den contributed his final bit of wisdom. He said softly in my ear, "No...All of them" Now me, I am always a little leary of moving my supply depots into harm's way. But the Master knew better. I sent 12 ol down to watch over my next pack of lings, now fully upgraded. A few scourge hit their mark but he couldn't produce enough to make a difference. With my vision and the adrenals, the lurkers started falling very quickly. I think he had 5-6 by this point. (Maybe next patch will have Ridilin cloud as one of the spells) As the cracklings poured into his natural once more and his expansion hatch went down...the music started...those few beautiful yellow words that seem to appear so rarely in ladder games...

{MS}Marine has left the game

Victory!

Hey, maybe I am not such a schlep after all.
Lessons learned.

1) Den (jeezumcrow)is real.
2) he knows more about starcraft than me.
3) don't ever let your opponent catch his breath. My switch to hydras might have been as deadly as his tech jump at the beginning, if I had given him time to recover.
4) don't play so much Starcraft that you forget how long it takes you to get around New York City--Den after a game of his own almost missed his bus back to Boston. Hehe. We ran from 48th and 10th all the way to 44th and Broadway. Luckily we had good train karma...but then again I was with the Master wasn't I...
