Nohunters has been erratic for the past day or 2 - diablo chat bots, "irrelevent" people, spamming bot, u name it. Anyway, after hours of boring work I come home and head over to kali assuming I wouldn't find a decent game in nohunters cuz it has become your average-joe IRC channel. I played an old battle-mate, Scalp^dag on dire where we both chose random and with god's blessing I go toss vs. his terran. The game dragged, neither side was winning where his BC's would come and my storm'd drive them off. Game ended with his cursing at storm (yes - we all know how gay storm is when you're the one being stormed on =[) and no minerals left on the map. It took a good 1.5 hours.
Nevertheless, the report I bring you today, is about a ladder match on bnet hours after that exhausting dire game. 12AM EST: I logged on, headed over to my usual hangout on bnet - nohunters. Hrmf, I got booted =[ Switching to the NWTR and x17 where the rest of the nohunters refugees were, I learned that it got taken over. Oh c'mon.... this is bnet for Christ's sake, why are we seeing IRC take overs??
Well, x17 was being spammed by people chatting and I was too tired to look for a game in crowded place like that so I took refuge in alt+j - yay, all the 1200+$#@$#@ games were either full or unjoinable. Hosted my own 1218+++ no dis and the first person to join was actually a non-korean. The name was deathgod. His ladder rating was well over mine - 1243 vs my 1218. I start hearing voices in my head; while a little devil tells me to chicken out cuz this guy's got 11-1, a bravish voice tells me to confront him, show him my crap skills and win gloriously, besides - he's a non-korean ladder player! Well, what do we learn from the movies? Good guys always win - hence if I listen to the devil I lose, so I take him on, hoping that I'd win somehow. Hey, but again, Tom Hanks was brave and decided to save private Ryan, he still ended up dying...... ANYWAY, let the game begin.
Setting: The Lost Temple (where is the temple anyway?? the numerous imbalances on this map are starting to make me believe that people over-play this map not because of its design but are on some sort of searching for temple quest)
snowjob(don't ask me where i got this name from, i don't even know): random - zerg, 6 start
deathgod: chose toss, 12 start
Welp, I contemplated a long while before sending my first OL to scout because I was random and I didn't want my opponent to get a quick anti zerg toss-build (is there one?) fast. Before I made up I mind and decided not to scout, my OL was already at 9..... (I guess I sent it there right in the beginning by accident) - empty. Phew.... I dragged my OL back so that no probey could see it. I did my standard vs. toss build:
1) 8 OL
2) 10 pool (dangerous if he attacked with 1 zealot.. or is it?)
oh wait... I got interrupted here - an annoying probe came in and started circling around. Attacked it with a drone, went back 2 mining, sent another one on it so it'd go away. Slapped a creep down fearing an early rush. I go on with my build:
3) something gas (i lost count)
4) 16 2nd hatch at main, touching top-right corner of first hatch
5) 17 another OL
Then suddenly a scouting ling sitting outside his base got gang-raped by about 8 zealots. Uh-oh, I did a anti-2-zealot rush but now 8 are on me. I started pumping zerglings outta all my larvae, hoping that they'd make it in time, and put another sunken behind the existing one. His zealots came in with an escorting probe. Hmm... I've seen 4 zealots + 3 probe rush, but what gives this 8+1? Anyway, I scared him away with those 2 sunkens. And that dumb probe came back again after 20 seconds and my sunkens showed it who was the real probing master.
By this time my evolution chamber and hydra den was done. I made sure I made no hydra until my drone count was up to around 20, and started cranking my hydra weapon+1. His zealots were still on my ramp, constantly being reinforced. I decided to attack when I had 12 lings + 8 hyds. Oops, big mistake - who says you don't need micro when you have lings? I was down to 6 hydras with no ling support and ran pathetically back to my sunkens. His zealots were feeling just as stupid and decided to give chase. 10 zealots or so died to 3 sunkens and 6 hydras. I just ran around with my hydras while my sunkens hit'em... maybe you can call this micro'ing too?
"You're no newbie" deathgod complained
I never said I was one, I just stated that I kill newbs for ladder points.... according to Mark4's theory. Which, I'd like to waste a paragraph arguing against. He states that if you do (rating-1000) / (wins - losses) and you get less than 20 or 25 you're a newbie killer. Now now....my ladder record was 42-25 prior to entering this game, and I only have 1218. Meaning I gain on an average of 12.8. Ok.. that is pathetic, but my point is that 15+ of my losses came from my first 30 ladder game this season. Where my constant K was still at 50, making each game +-24~25 when I play someone of my own rating. After those 30 games I started winning a little more, only finding myself winning about 14~15 when playing someone of my own rating. But honestly there was only 2 games where I played someone who had substantially lower ladder rating than I did. =[ Anyway, just my 2 cents on this.
Back to the game....
After the short-lived victory I felt good, brought about 10 hydras , marching to his base, knowing that if he tech'ed I'd lose because even with 1 base toss will be outresourcing my 2hatch hyds build at any given point. My hydra squadron leader reported a cannon behind ramp supported by 8 or so zealots after sacrificing his life to my bad micro'ing. I ran home with those zealots on my hydra tail. 6 or so more hydras attack-walked to my choke where those zealots ended up dying. I tried micro'ing, and found myself dragging the wrong hydras every single time. Losing more hydras than I really should have, his zealots died with 9 or so hydras remaining. At this point my armor upgraded +1 was half way done because I forgot to do lair and couldn't do weapon +2 instead =[
This cat/mice game went back and forth a couple times. I saw myself losing despite I won every single battle because he switched zealots escort from probe to high templars this time, hoping to fullfil his zealots' lusts for "mature" ones. Good thing he wasn't micro'ing much - I managed to kill all temps before any "good" placed storms could be placed. I ran like crazy from storm, getting free hits from zealots. In the end I had 2 control groups of hydras with about 40 health each. Some careful micro attempts still won me the battles after the templars died.
Expand time - seeing that he has not expanded at his natural I took my time to build a 3rd hatch at mine. I also sent 2 hydras patrolling between 9 and 3's main/natural. Caught a probe building pylon on 9's ramp, tsk tsk - probe got probed again. More cat/mice between his zealots/temps and my hydras. At this point my hydras were at 2/2 while his zealots were still 0/0/0. But I was exhausted, I didn't know how much longer I could kill temps before losing groups of hydras. I guess he spent all his upgrade $$$ into making zealots, because he had a damn lot! Suddenly, an idling OL eating dragonfiles caught a glimpse of lined probes walking out of his base toward 9. Hm... WTF were the 3 letters spinning in my head but when I double checked my minimap, I realized my "patrolling" hydra at 9 never patrolled all the way into 9 start. Worried about a fully established base while rejoicing the fact that he has to transfer his probes like this, I sent 12 hydras to end those probes' miserable lives.
Boy oh boy was I wrong or what. He had at least 12+ zealots coming out of his main and my hydras were forced to retreat because they were my only ones. After a fierce battle at my natural between raw hyds and raw zealots....
"you won" deathgod said
Dragging my hydra at 9 to his base, I was relieved to see nothing but probes and a nexus.... not even assimilator. At this point I guess I had the game, the lone hydra danced with the probes, killing like 3 before I let it sit and got probed. Deathgod left the game when his last batch of zealots were intercepted at 9's mineral natural with exchange of "gg"'s.
Awesome, I saved private Ryan and managed to live. Making the movie a little less sad, but I get to go home to my wife with my ever-trembling hand. Upon reviewing the score page - I came across something I've never seen before: deathgod outscored me in everything but structures!
This left me pondering.... if he had built that nexus at his natural instead of naked 9, I think I'd have lost. Now, people keep saying zerg > toss on land, and I'm definitely having my doubts after this game. Although I'd have known about his natural if he were to expand there in the first place, there was nothing I could do - most of the battles took place on the bottom half of the map where he attacked me and I fended him off. A couple cannons/temps and his close-by gates' zealots could've easily driven me away from his natural. I don't know.... any comments/suggestions on my part? As to what I could do if he were to have a well defended natural with constantly flow of temps/zealots. I know some will say "go mass lings! or mutas or ultras!" or wutever but I was on a tight budget.... my constanly flow of hydra was my only way of driving his zealots away.
Lessons learned: Tom Hanks'd have survived if he didn't let that German guy go, oh ya, and that chicken with the ammos, he should've died.
Thanks for reading my BR - this is my first, any suggestions welcome =]
