| The computer can actually be a good player once in a while... | | | Author: | | | IP: | XXXX | | Date: | 05/25/99 09:05 | | Game Type: | Starcraft | | Labels: | Starcraft(1), Text Only(1) | | Report Rating: , # of Ratings: 2, Max: 4, Min: 4 Lifetime Rating for War_Lord{WG}: 4.0000 | | It started out as any basic game for me usually does. I made a public game intending to play 3 vs 5 comps on Bloodier Bath. A person by the nick of ragman49 joined, and after giving up waiting for a 3rd, we chose to go 2 vs 4 computers. Sounds easy enough, but it wasn't.
The game started out bad enough. I was Protoss, and my ally was Terran. We were up against one Protoss, one Terran, and two Zerg. On top of that, I was on the right side of the map in the middle, and my ally was at the bottom middle, leaving an AI (which we later found was Terran) between us. Also, I was slow on my build order, and payed dearly for it. Before I could get 3 cannons warped in at the choke, my base was rushed by both zerg AI's. This threw a monkey wrench in the game, forcing me to abandon my base with my probes and run to ragman49's base. I had 18 running, but only about 8 made it. Immediately I build a Nexus within ragman's base, barely in time before my base was wiped off the map.
Shortly afterward, all 4 AI's were knocking down the door to our base. Luckily though, my ally had several bunkers, turrets, and tanks up. I too had some defenses up, but I was more intent on building a Robotics Facility so to drop some dragoons and probes on my former base and reclaim it before ragman49 ran out of mineral at his. This took some time, but before long I did just that. I reclaimed my base with ease, and built a good 14 cannons at the choke point.
This was about the time I figure that all the AI's decided to tech. Shortly after reclaiming my base, a white defiler plagues my cannons. This, as we all know, drops the hit points of the target to 1. That wasn't good at all, especially since I had Protoss beating down the door seconds later. I made it out with 4 cannons left, but barely. I rebuilt my cannons, along with 8 carriers and 4 shield batteries, only to find I was quickly running out of minerals.
So here we were, versus 4 teched-out AI's, tanks, cannons, and other stuff with 1 HP, and almost out of minerals. Another well-timed plague then hydra rush put an end to 2 of my carriers, and the others were left with 1 hit point (thankfully I also had level two shielding on them). My ally had been double rushed by the Terran and Protoss, breaking his defenses and weakening his tank line badly. As I recall, he had 12 or so tanks at one point, and only 9 left.
Out of money and quickly running out of time, I decided I needed to expand. I trekked my carriers north, to the nearest unoccupied area, or at least I thought it was unoccupied. A swarm of white hydralisks were waiting there for me, but thanks to my shield batteries and some hit-and-run tactics, I was able to level the base in a few minutes. That didn't do much good, however, because the mineral was already gone. Figuring the other expansion's mineral was also out, I could only think of one thing left to do... attack.
I headed west, toward the yellow Protoss base first. They were out of mineral, and low on units, but certainly not low on cannons. There were at least 6 cannons guarding the base, which doesn't sound like a whole lot, but you've got to remember my carriers had a mere 1 hit point a piece, excluding the shields. I took my chances, and was not disappointed. The carriers managed to make it through with no problem, but I did have to fly to base 3 times to recharge sheilds during it.
This was pretty much what I did to the brown AI (the weaker of the two zerg) as well, while my ally focused on the Terrans. Slowly but surely, these bases were taken, and brown's expansion as well. I still managed to lose no carriers, but my ally's 9 tanks were down to 5.
I figured this is what the rest of the game would be like, but unfortunately I was mistaken. White was the enemy which had attacked us the most, so we figured it had used all its minerals. We took no chances, though. We teamed forces, and rushed the choke point.
I swear, the whole Swarm was waiting for us there. Hydralisks, zerglings, lurkers, and mutalisks all met us at the choke. I must've returned to base (all the way across the map) 4 times to recharge sheilds. We eventually did make it, but barely. I was left with 4 carriers left, and my ally was severly crippled too (though I don't recall how many tanks he had left). Unfortunately, the only screen shot I thought to take was that of the victory screen. It shows that I had an amazing 1094 kills, and my ally had 743. That's 3 times more than usual! That oughta show you people who think playing computers is a bore... not this one. This game was certainly as hard as playing some humans, and for a while we didn't think we'd win. But, we did, and it was an awesome game, and I hope I find ragman49 again.
Ragman49... if you're reading this now... gg!!!! And catch me on again sometime! |
