BGH Strat of the Day (Beating the Terran Turtler)

Welcome to the second installment of the BGH strat of the day. If you missed the first installment, you can check it out by clicking here

Today's strategy centers around the Zerg drone. Normally, this harmless looking creature is considered to be a little slug with no uses but resource gathering, making buildings, and the occasional scouting. However, I have discovered a new powerful use for these drones that can be used against Terrans that turtle during a BGH game.

Confused? Well, the following game will demonstrate what I'm talking about.

The Game:

I joined a 2v2 BGH game looking for some fun. It was a "TvB" game and I saw that my opponents were SealTeam8 and Mourcoran. My ally for this game would be someone named Tobin.

The game creator clicked okay and the countdown to the game ensued. As my countdown hit three, I saw Mourcoran's lag bar shoot way into the red. "Uh oh," I thought. Sure enough, "Mourcoran has been dropped from the game" flashed across my screen.

"What do we do now?" SealTeam8 asked?
"Us two Versus you," I replied.
"Great :(" he said.

He didn't leave so we continued the game. My ally was blue and started in the bottom left. I was brown and started in the middle left. Our lone opponent, Sealteam8 was yellow and started in the bottom right.

I wasn't sure what was going to happen in this game, so I decided to build 6 hatcheries before building anything else. This way, if I needed units quickly, I would have them. I constructed 4 hatcheries at my main and 2 hatcheries at my natural expansion.

I watched my ally scout and he found our random opponent's base. He had 3 bunkers at his choke. A shiver of dread ran through my body, it was the dreaded terran turtle.

My newbie ally was not doing much, he was just kind of doinking around, building an scv or a marine every once in awhile. I knew I was going to have to take the reins and become the key to taking this victory home. Improvising quickly, I threw up a quick evolution chamber and 4 more hatcheries bringing my total to 10. Then I started pumping drones.

I got my gas going and built a spawning pool. Other than that I didn't build any thing else. I didn't want to hinder my drone production. I had about 100 hundred drones gathering minerals at my main and natural when my ally started questioning my tactics.

"When should we attack?" he asked.
"When I have 200 drones," I replied.
"Why 200?" he asked.
"Because then I won't be able to build anymore," I replied.
"But you won't be able to build any attack units," he said.
"I'm attacking with drones," I said.
"Why not zerglings?"
"Drones cost more so they must be better," I said.

He must have agreed with me because he didn't respond.

I had 150 drones now so I upgraded one of my hatcheries to a Lair and researched the overlord upgrades. My plan was finally coming to a head.

When my transport upgrade completed, I started loading drones into Overlords. With the evolution chamber that I built earlier, I had managed to upgrade my drone's armor to +2. What sheer power!

Finally I'm ready, all 200 of my drones are loaded into 25 overlords and I moved out across the map. I instructed my ally to create a diversion at his choke while I delivered my payload. He sent 8 marines and 2 medics.

It was time for the moment of truth. I sent 6 empty overlords ahead of my main group to take hits and then sent in my main force.

I killed quite a few troops and buildings with my assault. He was obviously rattled. I microed those suckers like crazy right down until the last one died.

** On a side note, if you want to practice your micro skills, try microing 200 drones inside an enemy base.

However devastating my drone assault was, I wan't able to finish him, and my ally was still in no position to help me. Luckily, I still had 18,000+ minerals and 8500+ gas. I went back to my base and built 3 drones. I built a hydra den with one and put 1 on minerals and 1 on gas. Then with my 10 hatcheries, I built 30 hydras and finished him off with the help of a few marines from my ally.

The Scores:

As you can see, this is a very effective strat. Nothing like 200 drones with +2 armor to bust up a turtling terran.

I will say this though. It takes a helluva long time to load 200 drones into 25 overlords.

Anyways, happy hunters, see ya next time!
