This one is a VERY old BR from 1998, when there was no Brood War, and when my partner Wererhynadon and I played against the cream of the crop on Kali and liked to switch names a lot to fit different themes. Just keep and mind its vanilla SC, there's no pics, aaaaand brace yourself for the action of:
THE WEREMUPPET ARCHIVES
EPISODE II
TRAITORS NEVER PROSPER
My usual partner and I were on Kali as was our weekly ritual, and for this night we chose our GWAR names of Cardinal Syn (Me, Weremuppet) and Whargoul (aka Wererhynadon). We started a 3v3 melee game in the Killing Fields. Here's the setup:
Team 1:
Cardinal Syn (Me) - Green Zerg, NW position
Whargoul (My usual partner) - Blue Terran, SW position
Some random guy - Red Protoss - West position
Team 2:
Zerg guy #1 - Brown Zerg, East position
Zerg guy #2 - Orange Zerg, SE position
Zerg guy #3 - Purple Zerg, South position
As you can see by the setup, it was the three of us, all located in the west, vs. three Zerg somewhere in the east, we didn't know where yet. I started my usual Zerg build order, getting some initial Zergling scouts and then going for several groups of Hydras before attempting to climb the tech tree. By this time Whargoul had set up a good defense in the South West, and a quick scouting report revealed not only Purple's location, but that he was going for a Mutalisk rush. This was bad news for our ally Red, who at this point only really had Zealots, and was just starting to even get Dragoons. Red attacked Purple with his Zealots, and was able to damage Purple's economy before his mighty Protoss warriors were beaten back by Purple's forces.
As Whargoul was beginning to send CCs to the isolated plataus above him, Red's base came under Mutalisk attack. Red, with only a few Dragoons to his name, would not be able to hold off the attack. I sent down 12 Hydras to back him up, and I successfully drove the Mutalisks off. However, that's when sheer masses of Hydralisks from all three opponents poured into Reds base, and there was little my 12 Hydras I had at the moment could do to stop it. But they did put up a valiant fight. At any point, Red was eliminated.
So now it was me and Whargoul vs. a swarm of upgraded Hydralisks. At this time I realized that while Whargoul might be able to handle masses of Hydralisks with his Terran defense, I could never outproduce three Zerg players. Having already had one colony in the north destroyed, I chose to colonize the island position below me before the great Zerg masses arrived. And so I did. It was not too long after that they arrived. Though they met tough resistance from my 36 Hydralisks, they were more upgraded than my own and continued to barrel on through. But by this time I had a Spire and a Queens Nest at my Island, and so I was still alive and well in the game.
That's when the Hydralisks came to their last foe. Pouring against his defenses, the Orange, Purple (He seemed to have given up on Mutalisks), and Brown Hydralisks died in droves before finally breaking the Terran defenses. Fortunately for Whargoul, he had occupied the elevated plataus above his base, as well as a third one in the north. He was already working his way well into Battlecruiser tech. As for me, I had my island and was keeping a couple of undefended colonies on the mainland just to keep them occupied. Yet the facts remained. Both our mains were decimated, the enemy had complete control of the mainland, and the near-limitless resources that went with it. I knew that there was an Mutalisk/Guardian/Overlord combo out there with our names on it just waiting for us. But nothing much happened. We teched up, and they didn't attack. Something was wrong. They had to have been prepping up something horribly and terribly massive for us, like maxing out their control. It was then I noticed:
<(Purple Zerg) has been eliminated>
I couldn't believe it. Clearly neither myself or Whargoul had done the act, which could only mean that our enemy Cerebrates had turned upon themselves. When asked who did the deed, the Brown Zerg accepted the blame. It was not too long after that that we got a second message:
<(Orange Zerg) has been eliminated>
Whargoul and I were bewildered but glad. We had been sent a Godsend. Our destiny was clear before us: Wipe this smug traitor off the face of the Killing Fields. Some fool chose to make his 3v2 advantage in a 2v1 against him. He would regret it.
At this point the game entered a new stage; the long siege. Of Whargoul's plataus in the South West, the easternmost one came under attack by Hydralisks tring to fire uphill. Even though level three, these Hydralisks could do little against the numerous Seige tanks positioned above. Foolishly many of Browns Hydralisks tried to keep Whargoul shelled up while at the same time suffering heavy casualties. He simply didn't understand that Tanks on ledges tear apart just about any units below. We figured he would have to switch to Mutalisks eventually, and when a good two or three squadrons of them did, we weren't surprised.
Waves of Mutalisks collided with the turrets, Science Vessels and marines defending Whargouls second platform, but slowly the platau was falling, and since Whargoul didn't want to recall his Battlecruisers against the Mutalisks, I sent down some backup in the form of some newly created Defilers, along with some Zerglings, to help out. By this time Whargouls Battlecruiser fleet had grown, and he began to make hit-and-runs on Browns colonies. Brown, who had no Defilers to plague those Battlecruisers, could not do a whole lot but watch as his creep colonies and hatcheries exploded in tidal waves of blood. I, using my Defilers, was able to plague the various attacking Mutalisks. It was then through an odd stroke of luck that a single Mutalisk, seperated from the pack, was irradiated by Whargoul, and ordered to attack the same target at the plagued Mutalisks. Ever hear upwards of 30 Mutalisks screech their death tones at once? The carnage was wholesale. I'm not sure exactly how many Mutalisks died right then and there, but it was a lot.
At this point Brown had lost most of his Mutalisks, and Whargoul was razing the colonies capable of funding more. Brown was folding, and throughout his empire we saw the Nydus Canals that he had used as knives to stab the backs of his allies. He seemed broken, but then something unexpected happened...
At my new main base a structure, unseen by me before, drew my attention, as the Brown Nydus canal opened, and Hydralisks flowed into my base, destroying it utterly. Having kept some burrowed Drones on the mainland from an early destroyed colony. I went out to colonize the North before my main could fall. I did so, and while I was rebuilding towards level three Zerglings, Whargoul finally completed his grand fleet of 3/3 Battlecruisers. It set off, stomping through resistance wherever it showed, obliterating not just colonies now, but main hives. With us now on the offensive, Brown realized his folly. He was rapidly dying. When we asked him why he turned on his allies he said that he had to get rid of "dead weight". We pointed out this cost him the win, and with not much more than that he conceded with a "You win, GG" and left. We had won the Killing Fields back from the Overmind.
Though we were put on the defensive early on, and by most rights we probably should have lost, we were able to come back and win for several reasons. Here are the morals of this story:
- If you're Protoss and your enemy's getting Mutalisks, don't get Dragoons, get Cannons! Dragoons can't do enough against Mutalisks. That's why Red was crippled and was left open to the later attack.
- There is not dishonor in retreat. If you can, do so, don't crawl into a corner and let yourself die just because you can't improvise.
- Man does not live by Hydralisks alone. Brown, Orange and Purple mostly tried to get by on Hydralisks when Hydralisks weren't always the best unit, such as in the attacks on Whargoul. There are 11 (Well, 15 if you count the BW units, Broodlings and Larvae, but that doesn't matter) Zerg units. Some players should make use of more than three of them.
- Defilers and Irradiate make a nasty, nasty combo. Just remember that.
- As always, NEVER, EVER GIVE UP! (This is an old BR, and while its cliched now, it wasn't then, so cut me some slack) Even if you can hope for your foe to accidentally disconnect keep on going.
There ya go! Hope you enjoyed this tale of a time before we had to worry about Dark Templar and Lurkers!
