SUBJECT: Continued study of Zerg biological entity communications
Commander Dominicus:
Our department's ongoing mission is to decode Zerg communications in the hopes of someday intercepting their strategic plans and perhaps even disrupting their hive unity in combat situations. This goal has not yet been attained, but we are able to provide you with information that may prove useful when facing this species.
The Zerg do not communicate along traditional mediums such as those we use. Their modes of coordination are based on a combination of psychic emanations and genetic coding that we are not yet able to fully decipher as they are communicated - let alone disrupt. We were almost convinced to discontinue our research until your Command Center provided us with samples from the carcasses of several zerges regum - or 'Overlords'.
The aforementioned samples proved critical in our research. Our ESD (Extra-sensory Specialist Department) detected residual psychic emanations from the samples. Also our GAD (Genetic Analysis Department) processed the DNA strands from the samples. Statistical correlation and data-mining of the information obtained by the ESD and GAD have provided a simple basis for understanding what passes as the Zerg 'language'.
The translation has revealed several points of tactical interest to your sector. The Zerg communications are strange, and disturbing at times. Yet we feel you must examine them for the benefit of the population in your sector. This report (for lack of a better word) translates these communications into English text (included below).
Some of the information is incomplete due to lost DNA strands and corruption of the psychic impressions as they traveled through magnetic fields. We have included new protocols for the shipping of these samples that we request you follow so as to minimize this data loss. Please continue to provide further samples of Zerg DNA for us to process. We would prefer live samples, particularly of the zergus regum since they serve as conduits for Zerg communications from Cerebrates. We realize the inherent difficulties that obtaining live samples would entail. We leave such matters to your discretion.
Administrator Darron
P.S. This particular communication centers mostly on events that led to the capture of the Overlord samples. Your records of these events should be cross-referenced for confirmation.
P.P.S. The Cerebrate in command of these Zerg forces was referred to only by a unique genetic and psychic code that was not definable. The closest consonantal and vowel sequence our group could form was 'Nafarias'. It is not known if this word is representative of a name or a rank or some other designation.
P.P.S. A 'project' is referred to many times in this communication. The nature of this project is still unknown - but appears to be a mission or objective of great importance to the Zerg Cerebrate. This may be a find of immense strategic value.
(BODY OF ZERG COMMUNICATION)
I, Nafarias of the [lost text] was [untranslatable] on the planet Char Magma for the greater glory of the Swarm. Char Magma remains the same now as it did upon its first investigation. Lava pools and fissures make some areas inaccessible. However, the surface is primarily obsidian and granite which allows for proper [untranslatable] by the Broods.
The infestation Overlord sent for our transport detatched my [untranslatable] and I formed the base Hatchery that would serve as our home. The glistening walls coalesced and solidified into a serviceable rind from which the Brood could feed. Immediately the four drones suspended in the Overlord were released from their [untranslatable - possible 'hibernation']. The famished drones fed on the [untranslatable text - possibly representative of 'food' but appears to represent the purple slime that blankets Zerg bases. Henceforth referred to as 'Creep']. Once nourished, they commenced the gathering of crystal with which to feed the Hatchery. The Overlord was sent north to investigate the terrain for more resources.
The influx of crystals were broken into their base components and assimilated - spilling out of the Hatchery as larvae and more Creep. I, Nafarias, instructed the larvae to form more drones for the accelerated development of our colony. The larvae formed protective shells and drew the necessary nutrients from the Creep to grow.
The Betrayer [a common reference that seems to address Kerrigan] as of yet has not located my Broods, and Char Magma contains vital nutrients in crystal and Vespene that will be necessary to continue with our project. My primary intent on Char Magma remained the complete absorption of every available resource to fuel our needs. The project must be completed in all haste for the future of all Zerg and the advancement of our race.
The loyal Overlord identified an enemy presence on Char Magma. To the north lay an encampment of the Protoss. These beings contain valuable genetic abilities that still yet must be incorporated into the Swarm. Their [untranslatable] thwarts simple absorption and their pride resists compliance against the inevitable. They would need to be subdued by force. In accordance with the need, I instructed a drone to unravel its being and send [untranslatable] into the Creep to draw more nutrients. The drone began to evolve into a spawning pool from which the genetic [untranslatable] needed to form Zergling would come.
I commanded the Overlord to return before it was attacked. He had provided valuable information. The Protoss Commander had constructed another Pylon. One Gateway was stabilizing and another was appearing. There would be much Protoss [untranslatable] to absorb. I could sense the Protoss Commander's desire to slay me and my Broods. I would waste no words on the Protoss Commander. These haughty entities were ever resistant to the needs of the Swarm.
As the pool formed, the returning Overlord passed another node of resources very close to the Mother Hatchery. Both vespene and crystal were there. A critical risk needed to be taken. Another Hatchery at this point would slow the initial development of Zergling, but would provide increased resource absorption. I mused on our purpose and the inevitable conflict ahead. Another drone was sent and to begin forming a second Hatchery at the new resource node.
As nutrients became available for increased development, I instructed another Overlord and more drones to form. The Protoss would be coming soon I knew. Our defense must be able to withstand them. Yet I knew that both bases could not easily be protected by the use of Sunken colonies. Another great risk. I would forgo Sunken colonies in the hope that the swarm could out produce the Protoss commander with the addition of the Hatchery.
The Pool and the Hatchery completed within minutes of each other and I began the development of Zergling with haste. Drones, Overlords and Zergling were constantly produced. I began a third Hatchery to keep up with the influx of minerals. A scouting Overlord noted the passage of several Protoss Zealots as they entered the plateau in which our colony thrived. Seven Zealots came, no more.
I sensed at this time a disturbance in the psychic ether. The Protoss Commander was attempting to communicate with me. It was fruitless I knew, however it was customary to offer the Protoss the opportunity to willingly surrender their [untranslatable] to the Swarm.
"Zerg Cerebrate - I am JourneyMan of the Protoss. I offer you this opportunity to surrender and leave this place. Comply or face destruction." I sensed the emanations from the Protoss Nexus as the Commander communicated with me. I caught glimpses of the inner workings of the Nexus, the humming of Probes, the use of artificial light and form - all perversions of the truth.
"You are either deceived or ignorant if you think my position so weak," I responded. "I make you a counter-proposal. Stand down. Destroy your Pylons, and surrender your troops to me. Come unarmed to our Hatcheries where you will be absorbed. You will obey either alive or you will obey in death. No matter your choice, you will soon join our way of life."
The Protoss Commander discontinued his communication. Such impatient and proud beings they are.
Thirty Zergling leapt in response as the Zealots neared the second Hatchery. More Zergling were being born. In a bloody melee the loyalty of the Zergling were [untranslatable] as they died for the Swarm. All but three Zergling were lost, but this was inconsequential. Their measure of creation had been filled and they would return to the Swarm again in times yet to be. The Universe is only a feeding [untranslatable] - a vessel that holds the nourishment necessary for the Swarm. It is we that give it life and purpose. Death is not a loss - it ensures the future for the Swarm in the ages.
It is more offensive to me that the nourishment needed to better ourselves (and in thus doing better the Universe) is siphoned away by lesser beings. Protoss and Terran alike waste the very [untranslatable] that should feed us. These abominations are undeserving of the blessings that the Universe has dedicated to us. The deaths of these creatures will return the stolen [untranslatable] to the Universe and thence to the Swarm. I have no pity for the Zealots. They are usurpers and thieves unworthy of their gifts.
The time for battle had come. More and more Zergling were birthed as the third Hatchery coalesced and larvae were added to our [untranslatable]. I sent a large group north to the Protoss base where I noted that another Gateway was present and many Zealots were rallying in anticipation of battle. The need of haste was on me and I gauged the distances.
The Zergling I sent in two equal groups. One attacked a Pylon near the furthest Gateway. This Gateway would not function without the Pylon, but I had no hope of destroying it. The Zealots were too many and too close. My purpose rather was to distract the Protoss commander from the second group of Zergling that I sent to the Probes gathering minerals. A gas assimilator was there. The Zergling ignored it as I instructed. If I could cripple the Protoss resource gathering the battle would be mine.
But the Protoss are cunning. The Zealots attacked the Zergling at the Pylon, and my children were quickly slain to join the [untranslatable] from which all life would eventually be drawn into the Swarm. The probes fled towards the Zealots as the Zergling attacked them. Still the probes were congested and only a few escaped. The rest were destroyed. Three Zergling fell to the attacks of the Probes. Only four Probes escaped alive. The Zealots attacked. At my command the Zergling fled for the nonce. It was not expedient for them to die at that time.
The Zealots gave chase as the Probes returned to the minerals, but yet more Zergling were already pressing north from our Hatcheries. These joined with the remaining Zergling that fled the Protoss base and together they turned to face the Zealots. Twelve Zealots clashed with over forty Zergling. Again the battle was almost equal, but Zealots are hardy warriors and in the end only four Zergling remained. Two severely damaged Zealots fled back to their base seeing that more Zergling reinforcements were arriving.
It was not long before another thirty Zergling came as a storm into the Protoss base. Now I knew the time had come to stop the Protoss from stealing our birthright. I estimated the possible outcome. Only five Zealots withstood us - two with wounds gaping. There was a lone Dragoon there as well. I suspected the loss of only five to ten Zergling at most. Inconsequential losses.
The Probes came in desperation to assist, but there were not enough now to be a threat. In the end, the Protoss base fell as the defenses collapsed. A Forge was in the Protoss base now, as well as a Cybernetics Core. We had been fortunate. The Protoss commander had delayed the development of the Forge in lieu of producing more Zealots and a third Gateway. Two Photon cannons and more Dragoons would have turned the tides against us.
As the Zergling continued to remove the offensive Protoss structures, I estimated the loss of resources at the Protoss base to be negligible. Another Hatchery would go here and accelerate the absorption of nutrients.
But a new threat made itself known at this time. The last of the Protoss buildings fell into crumbled pieces as the Protoss Commander escaped. A Terran Marine became visible to the remaining Zergling. This creature was intercepted and overwhelmed, but undoubtedly there were more. Somewhere on Char Magma, a Terran colony had been developing uninterrupted.
I sent several of the more wounded Zergling out to scout the terrain and locate the Terran base - their damaged nature made them less useful and the sooner they perished the sooner they would renew the Swarm. They understood this well and their loyalty will be remembered in the [untranslatable]. The remaining Zergling I immediately returned to the Hatcheries for defense.
The Terrans are dangerous in large groups and I needed more forces for defense if Marines came to the Mother Hatchery. I commanded four Drones to form a network of Sunken Colonies. These would aid greatly in our defense. A Hydralisk Den would also be necessary - and I belatedly commanded a gas extractor to form over the Vespene geysers to expedite the genetic [untranslatable] for this need.
I desired Evolution Chambers with which to accelerate the development of stronger genetic traits for the warrior Broods, but these would need to wait. Even with the additional Hatchery and resource node, we did not yet have the genetic resources and nutrients to develop so quickly. The Extractor was complete and drones were assigned to absorb the Vespene within. The Sunken Colonies were formed, and a Hydralisk Den was half-complete when the Terran Commander saw fit to contact me.
