Introduction
The roar of the crowd, psi blades flashing, zerg blood spraying in the air… what could make for a better evening’s entertainment than a good old fashioned game of starcraft? Tonight’s gladiators took part in a Tao of Gaming 2v2 tournament. On one side we have the imports, an old and respected clan. Playing for them is ”/Silent-Strike, a veteran of the Kali 1v1 ladder, and his damn sexy teammate ”/Mantra. Their opponents are 404, comprised of WayCool404JR and 404DJNewStyle. This is the second round of the tournament, and the designated map is Plains of Snow:

404DJ selects red protoss and starts in the lower left, 404JR picks aqua zerg and starts upper left in the spot above 404DJ. The imports both choose to random; ”/Silent draws white zerg in the mid right and ”/Mantra gets purple terran in the bottom right. Watching the game along with me is none other than Johnny_Vegas, the man himself. His sole job is to make witty comments and distract me from taking cool screenshots, and he excels at it. ”/Silent starts out with his signature power opening, getting three hatcheries before his spawning pool. A very interesting move in a 2v2 game, it leaves him wide open to a double rush, but will increase his power tremendously if he gets away with it. 404JR, his zerg counterpart on the other team, uses a much more conservative build, getting a spawning pool and a sunken before his second hatchery, then another two sunkens. This leads to Johnny dubbing him “sunken boy” for the rest of the match. ”/Mantra develops a dual barracks opening to tech, hoping to take advantage of the high ground around every main with the terran siege tanks. And 404DJ opts for a gateway/forge/gateway opening, which immediately makes him “cannon boy” =]. If only me and Johnny could play as well as the people we make fun of….
”Bring some damn SCVs to bunker!”-Johnny
”/Mantra makes the first offensive move of the game. Taking his first six marines, he wanders over to the protoss main and starts trying to toast a few probes from behind the minerals. Unfortunately for him, 404DJ has placed cannons just inside his probe mining area where they are hard for the marines to target but still within range to prevent probe molestation. Two marines fall to the cannons and then two zealots and a few probes charge in to stop the attack, losing nothing to the marines. As Johnny put it “At least the probes stopped mining for a few seconds…” Emboldened by the lack of success of ”/Mantra’s ploy, 404JR calls for an immediate counterattack on the terran main.
”/Mantra has been steadily teching the whole time and is about to complete a starport when the first enemy troops hit him. Two full control groups of zerglings are the first to charge in, quickly running over the five marines that stand guard on the encampment. Then a second later eight zealots move in, engaging a tank just as it emerges from the factory. So what is ”/Silent doing to help his partner? Well, so far he has four hatcheries, around 35 control of drones and two hydras. All hail the mad powerer! On the other hand, that sort of resource intake combined with four hatches can make a lot of hydras pretty darn quick. As ”/Silent masses his forces to relieve his partner, ”/Mantra makes a calculated gamble and uses his barracks to buy him a little time, not lifting them off. His SCVs engage small pockets of zerglings, using their superior numbers to trade off evenly with the more combat worthy enemy. Despite his best efforts, the terran base is slowly crippled as ”/Silent pours more and more hydras into the waiting forces outside. Once he reaches a critical mass of ten hydras ”/Silent moves in, first dealing with the small groups of separated zerglings that are left, moving wounded hydras to the back of the battle, then engaging the zealots in a series of hit and run attacks taking full advantage of the ranged attacks of the hydras. As the battle progresses one factor is telling; every five seconds or so another hydra arrives from ”/Silent’s base while the 404 forces grow steadily smaller. Eventually, with the help of the few remaining SCVs and a vulture, the enemy was forced from ”/Mantra’s base, leaving a few burning structures and two SCVs left to recover.

While ”/Silent has directed all his forces into the salvation of ”/Mantra, 404JR decides to test the defenses of ”/Silent’s main. Sixteen zerglings attack into the undefended outskirts of the mineral patches, heading right for the drones. Just as they hit a few hydras hatch, and ”/Silent directs his drones to attack move in the area between the forces to block the advance. 404JR loses some zerglings but takes down the hydras, then turns on the drones. A few drones fall and then the next set of hydras hatches….then the next, and the set after that. The zerglings are quickly even in numbers with the hydras, and with the addition of the drones are beaten back. This last engagement prompted two discussions between the teamates. ”/Mantra asks ”/Silent if he can quit now with it being pretty much over. Team 404 has a different view:
”/Mantra regains a little of his confidence when he isn’t immediately annihilated and starts the long process of rebuilding. ”/Silent take the initiative, taking nine of his hydras and attacking the back of the protoss probe line. Just as his partner before him was troubled by cannons so was ”/Silent, but with a little focus fire he managed to take them down with minimum damage. A separate force of five hydras watched the front door to the protoss base, assaulting dragoons as they emerged from gateways. 404DJ has to pull his probes from mining to escape their destruction, and doesn’t have enough to force ”/Silent back from his minerals. A quick call for help to 404JR brings a control group and a half of zerglings. The zerglings hit as 404DJ sends his two remaining dragoons and probes into the fray, and the five separate hydras go down. A second move encircles the remaining hydras by the minerals and they too are dispatched at the cost of most of the zerglings. By the time this sortie is over, ”/Mantra has recovered enough to place a 12 mine minefield in front of his base and each member of 404 has expanded. 404DJ to the upper right for some odd reason, and 404JR to the upper left.
”Don’t leave ”/Silent alone…ever”-Mark4

”/Silent is not slacking on his recon. He quickly discovers both expansions and sends a control group of zerglings to the upper right. They take down a newly warped set of cannons and start attacking the pylon before 404JR reinforces the expansion with some zerglings of his own. 404DJ decides to get in on the act and sends six zealots to help out also. If I can direct your attention to the minimap above for a moment you’ll notice a white line covering about half the screen. That’s ”/Silent heading out for the zerg expansion. You see that little red blob? That’s the six zealots. I’ll leave it to your imagination about what happened next, but suffice it to say that the zerg expansion was razed in record time.

”/Mantra has had plenty of time to recover by now, but he’s not up to any large scale engagement. So, using the good old terran cost effectiveness he puts a dropship worth of tanks on the ledge above the protoss base. One tank goes to work hammering on some new stargates while the other smacks half of the mineral line. While 404DJ is distracted ”/Silent sends two control groups of zerglings to the upper right expansion and finishes it off. ”/Mantra did make one mistake in his tank placement though, getting too close to the edge of the cliff in his eagerness to rape the probes. 404DJ took advantage of this by moving a control group of dragoons directly under the cliff and attacking up. Even with the height advantage, 12 dragoons don’t have all that much problem with one tank. The second tank fell a few moments later as a corsair chased away the dropship.

Trying to take advantage of ”/Silent’s attacks, 404JR launched an attack of his own in the hope that ”/Silent had overextended. His crackling upgrade had just finished and he moved five full control groups through the bottom route towards ”/Silent’s base. ”/Silent had a control group and a half of hydras and one of zerglings at the entrance to his base. His superior upgrades let him use the hydras range to hold off the first control group, and the second, but the next three started tearing his troops apart. Just then three lurkers finished morphing, and ”/Silent quickly buried them, then retreated his forces right on top of them. The results weren’t pretty. The zerglings pretty much vaporized and 404JR’s gambit failed.
Damn right I did =].
About this time ”/Mantra started getting antsy. So he takes his massive force of six vultures and moves out to attack 404DJ. About the same time 404DJ moved a control group of dragoons and a few odd zealots out to play. ”/Mantra quickly hit the brakes and hid in his minefield. The minefield was enough to get 404DJ to run back to his base. ”/Silent took the few minutes of respite to expand to the upper right, while ”/Mantra took one of the islands in the middle and the bottom left. 404JR hit ”/Silent’s expansion soon after the hatchery finished and a few drones had been maynarded over, but ”/Silent reinforced with lings of his own from his main in short order. 404DJ did an attack also, sending a control group of zealots to the new expansion in the bottom left and forcing ”/Mantra to abandon it.
”Mutas>Tanks”-Johnny
A little annoyed by 404DJ’s last attack, ”/Mantra drops six tanks on the ledge above 404DJ’s base. No low ground goons are going to rain on his parade this time. Unfortunately for ”/Mantra’s morale, 404JR came in with four mutas and start taking the tanks apart one by one. To try and recover from the resource drain the constant tank attacks have put on him, 404DJ expands to the bottom left where he had just evicted ”/Mantra. ”/Silent expands also, this time to the upper right. In addition to his expanding, 404DJ does the incredibly skilled Double Citadel of Adun Rush ™, prompting a few comments from the peanut gallery =]

In the meantime 404JR scouted around with his mutas and found that ”/Mantra had taken not one but two of the middle islands…and turreted them well.

With the money provided by three bases each, the imports were about to start laying the smack down. 404DJ’s new expansion is the first to feel the wrath, prompting an annoyed exclamation as the forces start pouring in. ”/Silent uses what can only be described “way too many” hydras to provide support for ”/Mantra’s tanks. The tanks pound away on the cannons and outer structures until 404DJ sends out what he has to attack, then the massive amounts of hydras just swarm over the zealots and dragoons. With the cannons weakened, the hydra swarm just rolls in and destroys the area.
Heck if I know ”/Mantra =].
”I knew ”/Silent and ”/Mantra would win all along”-Johnny
Once the protoss expansion falls ”/Silent leads the way into 404DJ’s main. A screening force of nine dragoons temporarily blocks the way, until the rest of the hydra horde arrives. As ”/Silent commits his reserves, 404JR does too, sending a control group of mutas to attack the top flank of the hydras. The mutas start inflicting damage, and with the dragoons it looks like the offensive might be stopped. Then a third and fourth control group of hydras patrol in, one from ”/Silent’s main and one from the cleanup effort at 404DJ’s former expansion. The end is clearly seen as ”/Mantra brings in a control group of tanks and goliaths to help finish.
With the fall of the protoss main only 404JR is left to oppose the imports. ”/Mantra takes the lead with his tank battalion, siegeing up just out of sight of the zerg forces, then letting loose with a massive volley. When six guardians make one last attempt to stop the slaughter, the combined goliaths and hydras dispatch them with few casualties. With this final effort the game is won and the Imports are victorious!

But what’s this? Somehow in the excitement ”/Silent targets his own hive with a control group of hydras at his main! I’m sure I’ve heard of this gosu strat somewhere before… Oh, right here actually.
