The Battle

So you're Zerg and your opponent's Terran. If you're like most people, you're probably thinking to yourself "Hmm.. I can either rush to lurkers, or do an expansion with a few sunkens and then get late lurkers. Either way I'll use the early lurkers to contain and then move to mutas and eventually guardians". That would be considered the typical sequence for a Zerg. But not for Montaro. Today Montaro decided he's too cool to do Lurkers, Mutalisks, or Guardians.

Montaro began with a build order building drones up to 9, an overlord, 3 more drones, and then a spawning pool.

While Montaro was doing this, :+:Kevin:+: built a supply depot at his choke with 8th SCV, and then a barracks with 10th. He followed this up shortly after with a second barracks before his first barracks was finished and before his second supply depot. Before the spawning pool was finished, Montaro sent out a drone towards :+:Kevin:+:'s base. What was this drone up to? Perhaps this drone was heading out to collect some reconnaissance?

While the drone is sent off to :+:Kevin:+:'s base, :+:Kevin:+: begins doing peon harassment, using the SCV to attack the mining drones. Whlie this is happening, Montaro's drone scoots past :+:Kevin:+:'s front door. :+:Kevin:+: later tells us that he saw the drone, but forgot to check it out.

Surprise! Montaro has begun the production of a hatchery in :+:Kevin:+:'s base! Montaro has placed the hatchery off to the side so that it is out of view. At the same time, Montaro begins producing zerglings non-stop from his hatchery at home. The zerglings serve to keep pressure on :+:Kevin:+: to give the hatchery time to build.

The zerglings run up the ramp and start attacking. What ensues is a very common occurance in terran vs. zerg games. Ordinarily a small handful of marines will lose to a comperable number of marines, and so the terran player often brings some of the sturdy SCV's to help. The SCVs are good both for the fact that they can dish out the damage against the zerglings, but also that they act as a physical barrier, slowing down the zerglings making it harder for the zerglings to engage the marines directly.

Using this technique, :+:Kevin:+: is able to fend off the initial zergling attack, but just as he does so

Montaro's hatchery completes! Montaro immediately begins production of a drone, which he intends to use to build a creep colony, which will eventually become a sunken colony. But it's not over yet! Although Montaro has secured a very dubiuos advantage by building a hatchery inside of :+:Kevin:+:'s main base, the cost has been quite high. The hatchery cost 300 minerals, and the zerglings which were used early on to keep :+:Kevin:+:'s marine count down has also exacted a toll on Montaro's economy. As a result, :+:Kevin:+: is now armed with an army and makes his move to attack Montaro using a force of 4 SCVs and 5-6 marines.! :+:Kevin:+: didn't know it at the time, but if this attack didn't do significant damage to Montaro - he was going to be playing a catch-up game with sunken colonies attacking him in his main.

Fortunately for Montaro, he can see the army approaching with his ever present overlord, and he immediately begins morphing a creep colony.

By the time :+:Kevin:+:'s units reach Montaro's base, the creep colony has finished and Montaro has begun morphing it into a sunken colony. When :+:Kevin:+:'s units arrive, the SCVs get right to work attacking the morphing sunken colony with the marines hot behind.

Unfortunately for :+:Kevin:+:, the zerglings could take down the marines easily because the SCVs aren't standing in the way, and the sunken colony manages to finish. Realizing that the situation is hopeless, :+:Kevin:+: runs his units back towards his main base. The zerglings give chase, accompanied by reinforcements. At this time :+:Kevin:+: realizes he's in trouble as the creep is clearly visible near his ramp. The zerglings run up the ramp and begin attacking a supply depot. They rip down the supply depot and then run for the cover of Montaro's offensive sunken.

Montaro begins making more sunken colonies closer towards :+:Kevin:+:'s base and chokepoint. Realizing that marines would be hopeless against such an advancement, :+:Kevin:+: begins construction of a factory, to try and get siege tanks which would be able to safely dispose of the offensive sunken colony threat.

Unfortunately, it's too little too late. While :+:Kevin:+: is busily spending resources on a factory and bunkers, to try and slow the approaching sunken colonies, Montaro builds up a contingent of zerglings. The whole time :+:Kevin:+: is trying to set up bunkers to slow down the advancing creep colonies, Montaro is easily able to charge his zerglings directly into :+:Kevin:+:'s virtually undefended peon line, ending the game.

Summary

Game time: 08:16

Montaro later commented that this strategy is actually quite hard to stop and not just something "cute" to do. He mentioned that he had this done to him once by Tillerman
