After being frustrated 1 too many times trying to improve my terran game (I still hate those intergalactic rednecks) I decided to play a quick 2v2 on everyone's favourite overplayed map, The Lost Temple.

Teams:

Wordbird (me) - Zerg, 2:00
DrunkLastKnight - Protoss, 12:00

vs

BeatsMe - Protoss, 6:00
BillyTheKid - Terran, 8:00

As the game opens, I remark to my grizzled Swedish partner that I'm going to go for a hydra+queen combo. He skeptically remarks: In other words, I'm doing all the work?

/me nods.

We open the game with fairly traditional builds, with DrunkLastKnight going for 2 gate goons and myself going for 9 hatchery expansion. I morph in some lings and sunkens, and get my base online. DrunkLastKnight keeps up the pace by building another gate, a robotics factory and a couple forges. He's a little excitable, so he over-estimates his economy, and is forced to expand to his natural. Poor guy.

Meanwhile, our partners were doing the same passive-agressive tactics, with BeatsMe walling up infront of his natural with cannons and zealots, and BillyTheKid putting most of his base directly above his ramp.

A period ensues with no major developements, all players content to tech up. I've expanded to my mineral only. At this point, I've been building hydras for a while, building the usual tech, and I've just plunked down my queens nest. I've got about 24 or so hydras along with droptech for my OL's, and decide that I want the islands, because I'm bored. I drive 11 hydras and 2 drones over to the bottom right island, and what should my wandering eyes find, but BeatsMe'S 2nd expansion!! Goodness!

Far too clever to let this opportunity go to waste, I drop my entire force on the island and raze the nexus and couple pylons. In a daring display of arrogance, I start building 1 hatchery and an extractor before the destruction is complete, giving our opponents a sneak peek of my new exp.

However, while this is occuring, I've decided that queens would be a good idea, and shift from building all hydras, to get about 16 queens. I smash through the walls of my SC piggy bank, and soon after my coffers are empty, with only some pulsating eggs to show for it. I'm about 1/2 way through the Broodling research spell, and am twitching like an addict waiting to start gamete meitosis (+50 queen energy). I've got about 36 hydras now, and decide that that is just going to have to be enough, because I've spent all my money on queens.

My partner has not been idle either, building up a rather large force of goons and zealots, with a heavy bias towards goons. His forces have been upgraded to 1-1-2. These he moves to the center, and finds himself looking down the barrels of BillyTheKid's arclite shock cannons. The valiant effort of the protoss force is in vain as no less than 7 tanks decide that protoss troops are looking at them cockeyed and that they should die. The army falls quickly, but somehow manages to kill 4 tanks and most of the support infantry. I send a wave of zerglings to finish the remaining 3 tanks, not willing to spare my valuable hydras from garrison duty.

BillyTheKid is not impressed. He spent a long time building that army, and he didn't want it to die. This is especially problematic for him, because he hardly has the economy to build another one. Therefore in a classic mid-game maneuver, BillyTheKid decides that now is the time to expand. He does so once, twice three times a lady in rapid succession, to his natural, his mineral only, and the top island. Only wait! Whats this? Oh no... DrunkLastKnight drops a whopping 4 goons on the island and cuts down the threat of an island expansion, while I thrash his mineral only base before it can complete.

Until now, we haven't heard more than a few dirty words and crys of anguish from BeatsMe, but suddenly he arrives on the scene with a massive army of about 16 goons, 12 zealots, and 4 or 5 templar just for good measure. His are upgraded, but not as much as my hydras, or my partners ground forces. However, it is an impressive showcase of Protoss whoopass ability, and the goons and my mineral only expansion get in a heated political argument. The dragoons win. Breathing a sigh of relief, and enjoying the temporary respite from mineral gathering, the drones mining there escape in a nearby overlord. Unfortunately for them, my island expansion is still looking for volunteers to work... Back to the salt mines for those sluggish peons.

At this junction I enlist the help of my partner and ask him to provide a diversion for the lumbering protoss armada. He does so very well, and sends a dozen or so goons of his own into a blue-white spray of death, and holds the attack force in place for a couple minutes. This couple minutes is important for my next trick, which is to pin BeatsMe's army against DrunkLastKnight's base with my medium sized army of hydras. At first things do not look good, with several temps getting in position to release their explosive mind melters, everyone's favourite spell, Psi Storm. But wait! Is that the cavalry in the distance? It is! about 16 queens with enough energy for broodling appear over the horizon, and several more with enough for an ensare or two. 6 templar vanish is a puff of smoke, and squealing zerg pets emerge from their chests. 5 zealots and as many goons meet the same fate, and the remains of the army is slowed to a dead (pun intended) crawl with ensnare. Time for a counter attack.

With my massive economy of about 8 hatches, I produce about 24 more hydras to replace the ones I lost, and load them up in OL's. Another 24 mass in the middle, and I let my queens recharge. It is time for BeatsMe to get a taste of some good ol' zerg lovin'. Several broodlings later, and along with the smell of toasted hydralisk, there is nothing left in the ex-protoss base but the tattered remains of a dragoon slumber party.

Soon after, DrunkLastKnight, with no sense of casualty pours battalion after battalion of fully upped protoss ground troop special sauce into the terran base, laying almost all of it waste. The tanks on the ridge prove to be the deciding factor, but their temporary relief is shot to hell as I unload about 8 OL's worth of asskick on them, along with my queens adding some extra, but unnessecary punch. Several GG's later, BillyTheKid leaves.

Lessons Learned:

1) Queens, although expensive, are kick ass. Most of mine had 3 kills, and because I only broodlinged expensive units like goons, temps and tanks, thats a lot of damage done. And DrunkLastKnight thought he would have to do all the work...
