WGL Starcraft Season 2

Eternal Darkness vs. les Baiseur

Games began on Saturday April 22, 2000.  les Baiseur (25) advanced through the preliminary via a forfeit by Club-G (8).  Eternal Darkness (24) advanced by beating D-Generation-X (9), (DX tried to gain an advantage somehow by declining obs on the last game-BOO HISS, but lost to [Dark] anyway.  Maybe they won't decline obs next time).

Sunday rolled around for the next batch of games.  I soon found myself ready to observe the Eternal Darkness / les Baiseur match.  this was to be a best of 3 match (2v2) to decide who would continue to the Quarter Finals!

Let's check out the action:

Game 1 involved [Dark]Xin and Jian[Dark] playing for Eternal Darkness and GBAISERTAFEMME and GBAISERTAFILLE (from now on referred to as AFEMME and AFILLE) representing the French Legion of les Baiseur.  Team [Dark] was given the coice of first map, and they picked ----drum roll----   The Lost Temple.

the lost-found-lost-found-lost-found...(you get the picture)... Temple. Game 1 begins.

Phase 1:  Must get Underpants

[Dark]Xin morphed red Zerg at 3:00 while his partner, Jian[Dark] warped in teal Protoss at 12:00.  On the French side, both AFEMME and AFILLE warped in white/orange Protoss at the remaining 9:00 and 6:00 positions respectively.

The game is finally underway.  All the Protoss begin double Gateway builds while the lone Zerg of [Dark]Xin morphs a fast Spawning Pool followed by a second Hatchery.  Scouts are soon all over the map, sent by both teams to find out where and what people are doing.

[Dark]Xin has been bothered by a 'probe that just won't go away' and hatches a batch of zerglings to take care of it decisively.  The zerglings are soon joined by a few more and move on to go cause "Hey, probes!!! Get over here and help!" some havoc of their own targeting AFILLE at 6:00.

AFILLE is only able to slow the early lings down with 1 zealot and 2 probes.  He soon has two more zealots and with the aid of 2 zealots from his partner the early lings are killed with only minimal losses.

AFEMME and Jian[Dark] have both begun gas gathering and [Dark]Xin has gotten both gas and a Hydralisk Den.  There is also a slight buildup of troops as all the Protoss have been warping in zealots.  Team Dark prepares for a combined assault this time.  Jian[Dark] sends a group of about 6 zealots out towards AFEMME at 9:00 and calls for [Dark]Xin's newly hatched lings to assist.  Team Bais has rallied to the center, though, and meet up with [Dark]Xin's lings.  [Dark]Xin quickly retreats knowing his roughly 12 lings will be no match for the same number of zealots.  AFEMME and AFILLE do not follow [Dark]Xin, but instead head forward to their original target - Teal toss at 12:00.

Remember though, Jian[Dark] has his group of zealots marching to AFEMME.  The combined group of Team Bais reaches 12:00 at the same time Jian[Dark]'s force reaches AFEMME at 9:00.  AFEMME has only a light defense and immediately withdraws his zealots from 12:00 and sends them back in an effort to defend his base.  AFILLE is left to attack Jian[Dark] at 12:00 alone.  And to make matters worse (or better depending on who you are rooting for) [Dark]Xin has his 12 lings back up his partner at 12:00.

AFEMME is able to get his forces back in time to safely defend his base, but this left AFILLE's zealots to the mercy of lings and a few more zealots.  AFILLE's troops die in vain as they do not make it up the ramp to Jian[Dark]'s base.

"Rush, we have to hurry!" "Back over here!" "No! Over here!!!" "um, get white"

Jian[Dark] had made it quite far into AFEMME's base as far as scouting goes and reports to his partner that he saw a Templar Archives and suspects Dark Templar to follow.  Jian[Dark] calls for his partner to try and finish AFEMME in his weakened state, but AFEMME has enough zealots at his ramp to repel the zerg.  All are content for the moment to regroup and tech.  This 'contentedness' lasts all of about 30 seconds.

For a quick recap after the initial rushes:

  • [Dark]Xin has support for a Den with 2 Hatcheries.
  • Jian[Dark] is warping dragoons and has a Robotics Bay and an Observatory.
  • AFEMME has the aforementioned Citadel of Adun and Templar Archives.
  • AFILLE is a little behind as he has just gotten his Cybernetics Core.

no one has expanded yet.

Phase 2:  ???

the assumption of DT was right. And the Overlord assists.Team Dark are the first on the offensive again combine their forces on AFILLE at 6:00.  [Dark]Xin brings a mixed group of zerglings and hydralisks, and Jian[Dark] compliments with dragoons and zealots.  AFILLE is able to contain the intrusive force at his ramp until AFEMME shows up with help in the form of zealots and dark templar.  Team Bais is able to hold off the attack.

"What do you mean, get speed??? We have been going as fast as we can!"The pendulum continues back and forth as Team Bais takes their victorious defensive force and send it to the zerg base of [Dark]Xin at 3:00.  [Dark]Xin was able to re-hatch another group of hydras, about 9-12 and has them to defend with one lone sunken.  Jian[Dark] inquires about his partners health status and sends a few goons to help.  He sees that the threat to his partners base will be quelled and provides some tips on what [Dark]Xin should concentrate on.

As long as the fight stays below the ramp, AFEMME is good to go.[Dark]Xin survived and begins hatching hydras anew.  Jian[Dark] has warped in his first reaver and pops it into a shuttle.  Jian[Dark] sends his troops to the 9:00 natural (about 7-8 goons with the reaver in the shuttle).  [Dark]Xin is quick to have his hydras in support.  AFEMME's cannons on the ledge spot the rallying force and Team Bais dispatches forces to rid the containment force.  Both sides take considerable losses, the reaver is popped, blood litters the ground, blue goop is rampant, but Team Bais sustains the attack at AFEMME.

Jian[Dark] had begun an expansion at his natural right before the confrontation.  After the battle outside AFEMME's base, [Dark]Xin and AFEMME both follow suit and expand at their naturals also.  The only upgrades so far are by Jian[Dark]:  ground attack by 1.

Again there is a slight delay of action as the teams prepare for assaults.  This delay is not very long, for both Team Dark and Team Bais seem very adept at production while engaged in battle.

Umbrella, anyone? Bueller....bueller.....Team Bais has rallied and combined their forces first this time.  A large group of white and orange dragoons and zealots are making their way to 12:00 to attack Jian[Dark].  There are a few high templar in tow and the confrontation at Jian[Dark]'s ramp is quite bloody.  Zealots see the newly warped cannons set up to defend the 12:00 and begin to raze the structures with the intent of wiping out Jian[Dark]'s expansion. "can you pass the soup, please?"

The rest of the dragoons and zealots of Team Bais begin to assault the ramp defenses assisted by nasty Psi-storms.  The reaver and the dragoons in defense of the ramp are standing well, but everyone is losing troops.

Just when it seems as though Team Bais is about to break the defensive stand at the 12:00 ramp, [Dark]Xin shows up with a group of hydras in tow to save his partners expansion and finish off the remnants of the Team Bais intrusion.

Jian[Dark] thanks his teamate then heads off on his own counter-offensive.  Deciding that the full frontals used so far throughout the game have been futile on both sides, Jian[Dark] loads a reaver and a probe into a shuttle and heads towards AFEMME at 3:00.  The probe is dropped on the ledge overlooking AFEMME's natural and immediately starts a pylon.  The reaver is dropped in the narrow space behind the minerals to begin firing scarabs at all the mining probes of the somewhat new expansion.  AFEMME runs his probes away and brings in a few dragoons (he had a group rallying near the temple), and eliminates the reaver and the shuttle.

AFEMME did NOT see the cannons that were now warping in above his base.  AFILLE did NOT send help to his partner (it wasn't really needed anyway) because he has just expanded at his natural.

While Jian[Dark] did the "I will reaver drop as a diversion to get offensive cannons on the ledge" maneuver, [Dark]Xin gathered his hydras minions and set them off towards AFILLE at 6:00.  AFILLE was already coming out with a force of dragoons and was joined by AFEMME's (they had dispatched the reaver quickly and immediately turned back to center).

[Dark]Xin, who was initially on the offensive here, saw the combining forces bearing down on him and let out a shout to his partner.  Jian[Dark] was already on the way, however, and before you could say "c'mere you sexy bengalaas" we had a full fledged confrontation right on the grounds of the Temple itself.

The mighty Temple - er um - Thingy Guy watches the festivities.

Tattered remains of Team Bais, the victors of the center battle, trudge onward to [Dark]Xin at 3:00.  [Dark]Xin was coming back out with a small group of hydras, but turns them around and defends at his ramp.  A few spare dragoons from his partner, Jian[Dark], stop the assault of the now-in-dissarray attack force of Team Bais.

So, lets take quick breather here to sort out who has what.

  • All protoss mains are mined out.
  • Jian[Dark] has had his natural expansion up the longest and has been effectively undisturbed in mining efforts there.
  • AFEMME has stopped mining at his natural due to those damn offensive cannons that were placed there earlier!!!
  • AFILLE is mining from his natural.
  • [Dark]Xin has his natural going and still has minerals at his main.

Phase 3:  Profit

AFILLE has decided to boost his mineral intake and expands "without any clothes on" to his mineral natural at 6:00.  He also has opted to save his partners expansion from the irritating cannons on that ledge by dropping a reaver.  Needless to say, the reaver quickly makes it safe for AFEMME to mine again from his 9:00 natural.

"ogogog" yas ot tnaem eh kniht IThe damage has been done, however.  [Dark]Xin has launched a fresh group of hydras to remove the new mineral only nexus of AFILLE.  Though [Dark]Xin was a little dyslectic, he managed to get word to his partner for the combined effort on AFILLE.  Reavers and hydras lay waste to the both the mineral only and natural expansions owned by AFILLE.

Double team assures victory over the vile robotic probes.

With AFILLE's mining now gone Team Dark felt safe to leave him be for the moment and go for AFEMMEAFEMME had only recently begun re-mining at his natural and though he had some defensive troops, he had not the production to provide reinforcements.  AFEMME tried to resurrect his resource intake by warping in a new Nexus at his mineral only natural.  AFILLE was not mining at all, but did have a templar and  a reaver to help AFEMME defend with.

is Xin cheering the Storm on his partner? Or just giving a direction?Jian[Dark] got a little excited dropped two reavers just a bit too soon.  A templar-in-waiting was more than ready to oblige the two reavers with a Psi-storm for each.  Both reavers and the shuttle went up in a great blue cloud sending them back to Aiur.  Unfortunately, the templar was sent back, too.

Team Bais fought hard.  There were some last ditch efforts, but Team Dark was not to be denied.  AFILLE had no running expansions and when the large force of Team Dark came a knocking at the 6:00 mineral only, the game was conceded by Team Bais.

Here are the final scores:

I HATE observer screens that say 'Defeat!" Blizz should really change that. Heh.

I hope I did this game justice.  It was a great game.  both teams were very tenacious in their endeavors.  I give a hearty GG to the players.

Thanks to Xena, Mark4, WGL Teams, and the rest of you geeks that actually read my reports!

Stay tuned for Game 2, Team Dark vs Team Bais!!!
