I'll put an image in at the end because I don't know enough HTML to put it in the beginning =) Simply put, it's got four starts on islands in the corners, expansions on the sides, and then a large island in the middle.
Players:
Me, Ativus, White Zerg (random) bottom left
Enemy, Blue Toss (Chosen) Bottom right
As soon as he chose Toss, I thought Rush to corsairs and then carriers. I decided to try for a fast Hydra drop, since I thought it might get in before he got corsairs. I went 11/9 drones (extractor and creep) and let them all mine for a second, then simultaneously started a second hatch, spawning pool, and overlord. My starting overlord found him with one gate, a zealot on patrol, a forge (no cannons yet) assimilator and cybercore on the way.
As soon as my second hatch finished, I went double lair. I had some extra minerals (I thought) so I made three sunkens, an evolution chamber and another creep to morph later. My overlord had returned to the expansion between us, I guess a waypointed it wrong, so I sent it back to his base for another look as overlord speed finished. He had a starport, a couple of goons, a spinning cyber core, and a fleet beacon comming. The starport was warping, much to my dismay.
After having to wait for minerals, I now had eight hydra's with range and halfway speed upgrades. My attack evolution was also close to completion They loaded up and headed over just as a corsair came in from the top. I guess he scouted with it but went the wrong way. The poor pilot met a quick doom thanks to the three spore colonies. He hadn't seen my other lords leaving though, so I still had an element or surprise. I also took this time to pop a drone in an OL and send it to the top left start for an expansion.
I landed my troops and started attacking. I managed to level 1/3 of his base, but he had 8 cannons around his nexus, gate, core and starport. Then, nasty blue lightning signaled the end of my assault. It was not all for lost though, since I had an expansion running and had set him back a ways by destroying his beacon and archives. My two OL's had been replaced, so I left them on the fringe of his base to watch him rebuild. Stupid, because three corsairs soon appeared and shredded them.
During my assault, not only had I established my expansion, but I had made a spire and upgraded to Hive. I put a canal connecting my main and expansion and put twelve hyrda's nearby. My scouting OL's had covered every expansion spot, and as yet there was no move by Blue. I sent an OL every few minutes to check on him, but he erected a wall of photons (8 or 9) whihc promptly stopped that. I expanded again, to top right and moved some hydra's to the middle and burrowed. I would have taken the middle, but I felt it was far to vulnerable and would be hard to defend against templar drops or carriers.
I head the attack message just in time to hear the death screams of my original overlord, who had been stationed at the expansion at mid bottom since early game. I caught a glimpse of three shuttles and about eight corsairs. My greater spire finished about the same time, so I morphed some muta's into guards and the rest to devs while morphing nine more. I also made six scourge, and flew them strategically at his bases. Two managed to take out a single corsair, and the rest died providing me with counts of his troops, eight goons , six zeals and 12 temps. My guess was that the carrier fleet would be a while if he spent all that gas.
I launched an attack on his expansion with three OL's, two with hydra's and one with cracklings while I moved my air fleet the long way around to attack his main. Three queens made mini-zerg out of three noble templar and my attack commenced. His corsairs went down fast with all those devs and my guards leveled his main with minimal losses. Sadly, a shuttle full of temps managed to land behind me and stormed the daylights out of me while I was looking at my base =(
He tried a couple times to take the middle, but he didn't commit much to it and my forces hidden there took it out easily. He managed to take another of the side expansions, the one on the right, but I had all the rest except the middle. Finally, a fleet of six carriers and twelve corsairs trudged out of his area toward my main. I cast a couple dark swarms and plagued them all with one shot (yay for me!) and took them out with hydra's. He then conceeded and we chatted for a bit while my forces whittled away his standing defenses.
He congratulated me on my early attack, and said that it cost him the game since he had to re-tech and then didn't have enough cash left to get an expansion force ready. Then his last pylon fell and the Zerg took over this little corner of the universe.
Lessons/Interesting things:
1.) Templars by shield batteries still broodling just as easy
2.) Keep an eye on your attack fleet, don't let it get stormed while you aren't looking
3.) Ground units have a role in island games, especially if you are teching quick and are worried of a drop
4.) Resource deprivation is huge especially when the map has only a few expansions that are all hard to get to.
5.) Hidden tech buildings make for wonderful surprises
Him: I didn't see a defiler mound!
Me: hehehe
Him: @$^%&$!!!
