Some of you may remember the little row in another comment section on how Protoss kicks Terran any day. I argued against it, and Protoss (with the name spelled funky) said uh-unhuh. So I challenged him to Terran vs. Toss, on River Styx, since he said that was a Toss map. Well, we met in NoHunters today, and I made him live up to the challenge.

Protoss (toss, chosen) top right.
Praetor (terran, chosen) bottom left.

My Phoenix Legion Commnad Center landed on the disputed world of Portoil, and prepared to fight the racist forces of Executor Protoss. We battled in the River Styx region.

Knowing that Protoss would be unable to mount a vigorous attack on me early, I decided to go with my usual teching build order. Depot on 8, bunker on 10, then a refinery, then a bunker, then a depot. I pumped SCV and marines out of a single barracks. I figured he would go for Dark Templar, so I bypassed the engineering bay (only good for marine upgrades) and decided to wait on the acadamy. Instead, I started a factory just after he attacked with three zealots. I had two bunkers, but they were just out of range of each other. He attacked the one with three marines in it, which was good, since I only had one marine in the other one. When the bunker started burning, I repaired it, and his zealots died. With my factory started, I decided to get another supply depot and an acadamy, for a comsat later. I also decided to build a few more marines, might as well finish filling the bunkers.

When the factory was finished, I immediately started a machine shop, and also decided to get a Starport. A comsat might also be useful, so I added that. When my machine shop was finished, I started researching mines, and queued two vultures. My SCV's had filled up the mining lines, so I stopped making more.

I had sent an SCV to scout earlier, and hid it in his natural expansion. I sent it back in, but turned my attention to his base. He still didnt have gas yet, and something was warping in. Either antoher gateway or a core.

Not really caring, I took my two vultures out, started two more, and mined the top road over the river. After I had a few mines up, along come some zealots. Ho hum. I pull my vultures back and mine at the bottom of the bridge. His zealots push through, and start attacking my vultures. Oops, I lost my vultures. I take the two I have built and wait for a third. Having enough money, I expand to my natural. His zealots come in, but turn away from my three vultures and bunker, and instead attack my other bunker, which now has 4 marines. I send my vultures over after mining around the front of my base, and then attack the zealots. I lose the bunker and the 4 marines, and a vulture, I have 3 left, so I send them to his base, but I forgot what happened to them. I start reseaching speed, and mine both of the bridges with six mines, and along come some mixed zeals and goons. Uh oh, no dark templar. Worried, I make a tank and research seige. My last vulture goes up to the expansion south of his main and lays a mine there. My other four vultures had laid their mines, and those mines plus the vultures took out the zealot support for the goons.

The attack takes awhile in coming, which is handy. I'm researching cloak and building wraith, and one tank has come out of the factory. Silly me, I forget to build another. I seige the tank in front of my bunker by the edge of my min, my factory and my barracks. In come his goons, and take out some mines at the front of my base. What the heck, I thought goons had too large a cooldown to shoot mines? Guess I was wrong. A few mines do hit, when a few goons surge forward to get my tank, which fires on them. Not many though. The tank falls quickly, and the goons start firing on my base. Uh-oh. I think I'm going to lose about here. I lose my factory and my barracks to the marauding goons, and I start another barracks at my expansion, I already have a bunker there, but it isn't filled. About this time I realize that I didn't research U-238. Uh-oh. This pack of goons dies to bunker fire, and wraiths which come in by ones and twos as they are built out of 2 starports, and cloak finishes. About three goons retreat, and I lose a wraith after cloak runs out. I had to take about 6 SCV off mining duty to repair my bunker. I build another refinery at my expansion, and start really pumping SCV there.

Along comes another pack of goons. Maybe eight this time? Uh-oh. I just started another factory at my expansion, so no siege tanks yet. I comsat his base, and see a robotics facility has been added to the works. Still only two gates though. I get one goon with my bunker, having like 7 SCV repair. The rest are suddenly out of range. Uh-oh. I add a covert ops to my Sci Facility that I built earlier. I repair for awhile, probably over 200 in repair. Finally, my acadamy finishes U-238 research. Boom, the bunker starts firing. Because they are all in range at once, the bunker fires at only one goon, solving the usual problem with bunkers spreading their fire. This carries over to the next goon, and after two are dead, they surge forward to kill SCV's. They get about four before they are dead. I decide not to make more, as my main is running low on minerals. I have about six wraith. I start a nuclear silo and a machine shop.

When the next attack comes, I take my eight wraith and attack it. The goons retreat. I start another wraith and a sci vessel for reliable detection. Also a ghost and another two marines at my expansion. I plan on filling the bunker there, and want to nuke. About when I start a nuke, along comes a group (10?) of goons. I start a tank, and scan for an observer. There it is. I send in my wraith, scan again for safety, and take out the observer. I attack the goons, and they retreat. He loses one or two before they are back to the bridge, and I head up to his natural to see if he has expanded. Nope. I feel victory dawning.

A few more skirmishes develop. One time he got half my wraith before my Sci vessel comes to get the obs. I repair my bunker a few times. Most importantly, I transport my ghost to his natural, and leave the transport there to keep scouting. I nuke from the back, and devastate two gateways (still his only two) some pylons, his Nexus, and his core. I pull the ghost back to his natural and uncloak, starting another nuke. Another time he attacks, and I seige three tanks who were moving up. A fourth dies unsieged and that threat is over. One time he starts a pylon with some goons at my min only expansion, so I take four marines and three unsieged tanks (I have two factories now) to hit that. The guys die, but I get an obs, and finish most of the goons with wraith. I get rid of the pylon with more tanks and marines. Just when I am sending more guys up the bridge, I move my ghost up to nuke in the same spot, and my attack force dies, just before nuclear launch detected. I move up antoher four tanks and four marines, and watch the nuke land. He apparently had an observer watching the whole time, but only managed to get one dragoon over to my ghost, who took three hits before finishing.

Protoss: God
Protoss: That was a lucky nuke.

lucky?

Protoss claims that the nuke was lucky because he took so long in getting a goon over to my ghost and another got stuck because of pathing. The second nuke took out all his gateways, three pylons, his core, and his nexus (the first also took a cannon). My dropship notes an expansion attempt at his natural, so I send in twelve wraith to kill it. My attack forces destroyes his last three goons, losing a tank. My wraith get the last cannon, and my wraith, plus the attack force decimate his base. He had an assimilator a pylon, a robo fac, an observatory, and a forge.

Protoss graciously says gg.
Then tells my I'm lucky.
lucky?

Protoss: Yeah, if that nuke hadn't dropped I would have won.

???

I took the time to remind him I had more tanks than he had goons before the nuke dropped.

you were lucky
If you didnt have that lucky nuke I would have won.

???

I eliminated him after he said he owned me early game, and had me turtled.

Funny, I thought that I repulsed his attacks and had expanded.

He had also blamed his loss on not knowing the map, after I informed him I had an expansion before he attacked with goons. Eventually he admitted he had played the map before.

I neglected to say gg.

-Take your loss like a man! Especially if you chose the map, and challenge based on race superiority.

-Capitolize on map control and people's mistakes (like me not having tanks.

I would suggest not taking this game as an example on race balance (an issue which, for me, doesn't exist). As the teams were obviously not matched (2 gateways just doesn't cut it). Plus, as Protoss told me after the match, his toss game was rusty (he hadn't played toss in two days).

Two days???

This is .Praetor, laughing as I sign off.
