0300 hrs.
"Sir, we have detected a Zerg colony blocking the division's advance up North." a pilot from the 41st Wraith Recon reported.
"Is there any other pass through these mountains lieutenant?" asked force commander Derrick.
"Negative sir. This is the only way through.."
"Then we have no choice. Prepare for ground assault!"
0500
"Sir we're being attacked by Zerglings!! At least half a dozen of them!" cried the technician who was manning the radar.
Two marines guarded the base and they fought valiantly, but in vain. They fought until their Impalers had run dry but still they were shredded and three of the creatures got through the perimeter.
"SCVs, destroy them."
They were destroyed seconds later. Still more came. But this time, a marine, Private Ryan, was smart enough to utilize the newly built bunker that stood in front of the base camp. With the help of an SCV repairing the bunker, the lone marine destroyed three of the beasts.
Soon, reinforcements arrived. Elements from the 17th Platoon were assembled and marched towards the Zerg base. The force was led by Corporal Laine.
The 12 brave marines engaged the enemy and destroyed three sunken colonies. Unfortunately, the corporal called the retreat too late and the squad was eliminated.
Meanwhile at base, a mobile infantry platoon was assembled. Another attack was to be launched. The force consisted of a dozen marines and three vultures.
The 107th mobile infantry was met at the middle by a Zerg force consisting of around a dozen zerglings and 4 or 5 hydras.
The 107th took over 50% casualties and decided to pull back.
Meanwhile at basecamp, Derrick had ordered the production of siege tanks. Two were already built and were guarding the base.
Not having much troops at his disposal, he assigned a half-dozen marines to join the 107th. This took them back to full-strength. The vulture lost was replaced with 2 siege tanks.
And so the mobile infantry group attacked once more. At first, a wave of hydras defending the pass threatened to crush the 107th. After the tanks were prepared however, they were turned into soup. The 107th pressed on and ravaged most of the base. Little did Derrick know about the xpansion just outside the Zerg base.
The 107th, exhausted and out of supplies and fuel, were ambushed from the rear by a dozen zerglings. Disrupted and unable to regroup, the 107th fought to the last man...
Some zerglings then attempted to enter the Terran base camp but it was a futile attempt. Although he mourned the destruction of the 107th, he knew that it was time to finish off these zerg.
Sixteen marines and four tanks rushed to attack the xpansion. In less than two minutes it was over. The pass was clear.
Derrick sighed and took off his cap and lit his cigarette. That was easy.
