I had taken the day before my vacation off and was trying to play on line. BNET was in an awful way and it took me 30 minutes just to get on with a stable connection. After “/whoing” my favorite channel, I decided to see what was shaking in the pubs under melee. I found a game relatively quickly with a name that I recognized so I joined:
likwid donqui! was the creator of the game and the map was Binary Burghs:
likwid donqui, immediately recognized my nick as I begun the chat with “I know you!” Even though we had never played together before or even seen each other on line before, it felt like getting a game going with an old friend. After comments on the state of BNET that day and the emptiness of the normal channel we began the game.
We both selected protoss.
Rychean = Green
likwid donqui! = Teal.
I started lower left and he was at upper right.
I got a little distracted in my opening build and I got behind. donqui’s scout probe showed up in my base and I had just my pylon with a GW warping. He scouted and attacked my warping GW. I warped my next GW and pylon, and then tried to chase him off with a probe, but then I sent it out to scout instead. My first zeal finally got rid of his probe.
My scouting was a little late for my liking. Both gates at my main were warping zeals 2 and 3. My scout reveals donqui had 3 Gates and 2 pylons. No zealots yet, but he most likely already had three warping in. I sent my first zealot to his town, hoping to maybe get there before his zeals came out. No such luck, my first zeal dies to his three then they headed towards my base. I sent my next two zealots towards his base to meet the 3 zeals he has coming my way. I did the same with the next 2 zeals I was trying to delay him so I could get a forge and cannons up. At times, I thought I won some of the zealot exchanges as I mistook his teal for my green. I manage a cannon or two when his 6-8 zealots attacked. He must have waited to rally his Zeals together. I only had 2-3 zeals with 2 coming in. I already had my gas and cyber core going.
Donqui losses a few zeals and pulls back. I train a few more zeals and I have my RoboFacility warping in at the very back of my base. He attacks again, this time with a mix of zeals and goons. I manage to bring down his zeals and head for the goons as they dance away. I didn’t want anything to do with chasing dancing goons, so I pulled my zeals back. I got a few goons of my own and started the range upgrade. My shuttle came out; so I took a probe to the middle expansion by hugging the left side of the map and then moving at a right angle to the middle. This kept my shuttle from being discovered by units in route to my base.
At this point, I had a reaver warping and a small force of 4 Goons and 5-8 Zeals. My shuttle comes back to my main, hugging the edge again. I began my nexus in the middle. Donqui sends in a mass of Goons, at least 8-10. My shuttle has already left my base in route to his with a reaver and a Goon aboard, again hugging the edge of the map. I have another reaver building and 2 zeals warping. My cannons fall, as does my infantry. My 2 zeals came out and managed some damage before they died; Then my reaver came out and got 2 goons before it went down. There are still 2 enemy Goons left beating on my base, but I had an important task that required my full attention.
Judging form the fact that my base was being pummeled, I knew that I had to get a pretty big return out of my Shuttle/Reaver/Goon combo. I basically thought the game was over but I had to at least follow through with my drop. My shuttle finally makes it to his base and I push all the way through to the corner of his base behind the minerals and away from his cannons. My shuttle received a good deal of damage on the way in from the photon fire of his cannons. He attacks with his probes. I pop the reaver once or twice and no more probes. I then begin focusing all scarab fire on his nexus. I placed my goon on hold position to keep it from trying to engage the cannons. I micro’ed my scarabs by right clicking on his nexus continually to make sure that each newly produced scarab targeted the nexus and not anything else. Meanwhile, his remaining Goons are destroying my main. Two freshly produced goons converge on my reaver, goon, and shuttle. I made sure that the reaver continued to fire at the nexus even though the enemy goons were in range. The very last scarab that my reaver was able to muster brought the nexus crumbling down. The reaver then died having served his purpose. I tried to get away with the goon and the shuttle, but I lost them both to his cannons and goons as I focused back on my base.
Back at my base, I have nothing but probes and a reaver training. I attacked with my probes since I had an expansion already going. My only hope was that I got all his probes and that he had not expanded. I was hoping that my attacking probes would buy some time for my reaver to pop out. I was in a bad way as the 2 goons that swatted my reaver/goon/shuttle came and joined his other 2 at my base. I lost all my probes and my buildings started falling one by one. He had four dragoons and I had nothing left to stop them. I focused on my expansion and I got a couple of cannons up and started warping probes.
Donqui now says he has to go; I shared vision with him and I asked him if he had any probes around. He informs that he did not and stated that I would have won. We exchanged GGs.
We both took a draw on this game and really it pretty much was. I had 4 units, all probes; he had 4 units all dragoons. The key was my expansion was on high ground and required a shuttle to reach it. I had 2 cannons protecting it. Donqui had no way of getting to the expansion, other than firing from low ground. He also had no means of getting more units as he did not have a nexus or even a probe.
It was a friendly exchange and the game was over in about 15 minutes.
Observations:
Scarab Control Tactic - I have been preaching about this for awhile, but you can control your scarabs to fire at a desired target even if you are waiting on them to be produced. The trick is to make sure you are already right clicking the desired target as the scarabs are produced. This tactic allowed me to take down his nexus while ignoring all other threats, including cannons and goons. I only razed 2 structures, but one of them was his Nexus.
Multi-Tasking and Defense - I needed better defense at my main and more unit production. My base crumbled very quickly especially once I was focusing my attention on my drop. I should have had my Gates hotkeyed and been pumping zeals or something while I was attacking.
Get a back up plan - Neither one of us had one. I guess I had an expansion but that is hardly a back up plan. If my reaver drop did not work, I would have had nothing left. Donqui had very little at his base for defense and probably did not see the drop coming. I tried to hide the Robo faciltiy at the back of my base.
Probes don’t fair very well against ranged or splash damage units. LOL! We both lost all our probes at our mains because we attacked with them rather than running them away. I think we should have ran them away.
Anyway, tt was nice to get a quick, friendly game in with a player I recognized.
Rychean
P.S. I had some screen shots of this battle, but they were not very good and were taken at the end once the outcome had been decided and we had shared vision. I opted to leave them out of the report because they really did not add anything to this battle report.
