SCV IncorporatedTM in assosciation with Aus-1 presents...

What not to do in a 2 on 2

Welcome one and all to the first [ScV] battle report in over 10 months. Hopefully it will turn out ok, as I couldn't even remember how to save a picture in Photoshop at first... Oh well, here we go

The game played was game 1 of a best of three series to determine the winner of a mini-tourney held in the Aus-1 channel (for those ofyou that don't know, Aus-1 is an FSGS server set up for all us players down under to avoid some serious b.net lag)

Anyhow, after battling through the first four rounds two teams were set to battle it out for first place. The teams consisted of crap700 and Iori(MT) playing Johnkill and his team mate Demikill

After trying to decide which map to use (after my calls for Dire Straights was shot down by all four players) the game was created on Lost "security blanket" Temple and my fellow observer Goomba and I settled down to watch.

I can't Live if living is without Temple

The game began with Iori selecting Terran and landing at the 12 o'clock position with his team mate crap700 randoming to Zerg at the 3 o'clock location.

As for their opponents, Johnkill decided on Protoss at the 3 o'clock location and his partner Demikill let fate decide and landed his Terran Com Center at the 6 o'clock position

The Game Begins

The players begin their build orders with Iori going first Supply Depot followed two Barracks, a Refinery and a first Factory

crap700 lays down a second Hatchery in his main followed by a Pool and a third Hatch in his main

1st Blood to team Super Mega GosuJohnkill warps in a Pylon, then two Gates and a Forge

while Demikill goes for a Supply Depot, a single Barracks, Refinery and a second Barracks

Team Kill decides to make the first move and Demikill sends 7 Marines and an SCV along with 3 Zealots and a Probe from Johnkill out towards crap700's base. They rally at the bottom of the ramp and then attack into the Zerg base. crap700 has not been idle however and his force of 10 Zerglings and 2 Sunken Colonies hold off the attackers until help arrives in the form of two Vultures from Iori

crap700 is obviously impressed..crap700 decides not to take the assault on his base lying down and sends out his lings, totaling about 8, along with 5 Vultures from Iori towards Johnkill's base. However, the presence of two Cannons and 5 Zealots at the ramp disuade the attackers and they pull back. Before they leave, Iori's Vultures deposit their spider mines around the choke point at the exit of Johnkill's base

Meanwhile, back at home, Johnkill adds a Robo Factory, crap700 has morphed a Hydralisk Den, Iori has 2 Factories and is working on a Star Port and Science Facility and Demikill has added a Factory and Star Port.

Being the resource hungry Zerg that he is, crap700 exapnds to his natural at the same time as Johnkill and Demikill both expand to theirs. Iori decides to put a stop to Johnkill's new home building dreams and deposits two tanks on the ledge overlooking the fledgling expansion. After pounding a Cannon into dust the Tanks fire no more as 4 Zealots are dropped onto them from one of Johnkill's newly made shuttles.

Turbo Newbie PowerDemikill decides that Turbo Newbies are the way to go, so he loads up 3 Marines, an SCV and a Tank into a Dropship and ferries them over to the ridge above crap700's newly completed Hatchery. The SCV builds a bunker and the Tank commences firing. Iori tries to help his team mate but his troops are quashed before they can help. The tank continues to fire and the Hatchery is soon destroyed in a hail of Arclite fire.

Guess no one ever told him about Psi-storm...Iori and crap700 set out again to attack Johnkill. A combined force of around 20 Hydras and assorted Lings, along with 6 Tanks and some Vultures from Iori storm into Johnkill's expansion which is defended by 8 Dragoons, 3 Cannon and some Zealots. Unfortunately for Johnkill (and a seemingly silly mistake to Goomba and myself) he had not yet opted to even attempt to tech to Templar. No Templar = no Storm as we all know. Without the psychic assistance of the Templar, which could have made short work of the attackers, Johnkill is forced to conceed his expansion against the superior numbers of the enemy.

But wait I hear you ask, what about Demikill? He has remained unmolested all game, he has an operating expansion, and he has successfully stalled crap700 from expanding. The answer to tis question is I don't know. Goomba didn't know either. Despite having 3 working Rax, two Factories, a Star Port and a Science Facility the best that Dimikill could send to the aid of his besieged ally was 12 Marines and a Medic, and Johnkill is left to fend for himself. Some nifty work with the Dragoons drives off the Zerg however the Tanks behind them halt any counter attack.

crap700: Strategic MastermindRemember those mines that Iori placed earlier? He did and used them as a screen for his Tanks, drawing the Protoss units in with his Vultures to be attacked by the mines AND the Tanks.

Johnkill salvages the remainder of his forces and pulls back into his main base to regroup. Meanwhile, Iori takes a time out to expand to his natural and crap700 expands to the Mineral only in front of Iori's base. Demikill finally decides to chip in and sends 2 tanks to reinforce his partner's Main.

How Things Stand

the lay of the land

The answer is noUnfortunately for crap700, Demikill's relief squad of Marines happens onto the naked expansion at Iori's Mineral only, and without protection it is soon razed. Following this successful attack Demikill sends out his ultra mega super attacking force of two wraiths, prompting Goomba to ask: "Does Blue have shit all?" The wraiths hassle the Tanks parked outside Johnkill's base, until they are shot down by some towers errected by one of Iori's SCVs.

Iori expands again, this time by floating a Command Center to the top left island, while crap700 gets ready to make a drop on Johnkill. 6 Overlords, loaded with Hydras head toward the Protoss base. If only he would have scouted first crap700 would have known that there were 16 dragoons and 2 seige Tanks inside Johnkill's base. Those Hydras that do make it to the ground are squashed in a pool of blood and muck killing a grand total of 1 Dragoon.

well, at least someone thought it was funny

While this is taking place, much to the amusement of, well, everyone in the game, Demikill expands again to his Mineral only using a number of floated buildings to speed up the process. Johnkill has been straved for minerals since losing his natural, and still has not teched beyond Dragoons. To try and remedy the situation, he shuttles some probes to the bottom right Island where the set up a nexus and begin to mine happily away.and there's more on the way

Iori decides that Demikill has had enough of being unmolested and muster his force to attack. The Terran war engine sets up shop just outside Demikill's mineral only expansion and begins to blast away. Demikill attempts to drive them away, but his Marines are reduced to bloodied messes, and his Wraiths gunned down by angry Goliaths. Demikill falls back to regroup in his expansion, but Iori continues to reinforce the position with more and more Tanks.

I took a moment now to check on upgrades. I mean after all, Demikill had to be spending all that moohlah on something, right??

Well everyone makes mistakes

Wrong. No upgrades at all. At least the other players had tried. Oh well. crap700 decides that an expansion really would be nice and sets off to Iori's Mineral only again, while at the same time finally ridding his ledge of the Turbo Newbie that had plagued him all game.

Johnkill decides that he has sat around in his base for long enough, and with a new expansion bringing in the cash he sets out to help his besieged partner. Mustering his Dragoons (the ones that had so successfully dealt with crap700's drop earlier) he begins to push out of his main. With some skillful play he destroys the waiting Hydras and Tanks and heads south. He finds 8 Siege Tanks, 8 Goliaths, some random Vultures and an SCV camped outside his partner's base.

commnication.... lines... broken...The forces clash, but Johnkill's Dragoons are too few in number and too weakened from the earlier fighting. They almost suceed but Iori's metal proves too strong. It is worth noting that if Demikill had joined in the attack with his forces they would have defeated Iori's units.

To make matters worse for Johnkill, crap700 chooses that exact moment to launch an attack on the Protoss expansion on the bottom right Island. With no way to protect it, Johnkill's only source of income is destroyed.

Where did all that money go?? Things begin to look grim for team kill as both crap700 and Iori begin to push into Demikill's base. For some explicable reason, Demikill has prepared no defences, and to top it off has only a bare minimum of units to defend himself. With nothing to stop the, the Terran and Zerg steamroll into Demikill's Main. With his team mate all but destroyed and with no units of his own Johnkill declares GG and leaves, closely followed by his partner, leaving Iori and crap700 the victors of game 1.

Well folks there you have it, some prime examples of what not to do in a two on two. Or a one on one for that matter. Demikill left right after the game so I couldn't find out what happened to all his minerals. There was also a distinct lack of communication between team kill, where as Iori and crap700 were in contact the whole game.

Now without further ado I will present my awards for the game.

  1. Iori recieves the "More heavy metal than Pantera" award after finishing his factories. he produced a grand total of 4 marines from his Barracks.
  2. crap700 earns himself the "Nah the drop is a great plan" award for his oustanding efforts in Johnkill's Main.
  3. as for Johnkill, he gains the "Whats a Templar?" award for his complete lack of teching past Dragoons, and
  4. Demikill is the winner of the "My buildings own your bones" award. In total he produced almost as many structures as he did units.

Iori also wins the MVP award for his all round good efforts through out the game.

Thanx for reading. Please feel free to comment, and be on the look out for my next report - "Battle of the Newbies"
