The Starcraft Chronicles: The Hybrid Wars Episode IV

Kerrigan was filled with a mix of rage and fear. She was human and a human is weak. She began to yell and scream but her cries fell only on the ears of Zeratul. He watched Kerrigan as she moved about the cell, cursing and demanding answers. Inside he felt a small sense of pity for the confused woman who stood before him. Kerrigan slumped into a corner and tried to rationalize her situation. She was no longer Zerg and that meant all of her abilities were gone. She could not regenerate and she could not control her minions. Without an army or basic Zerg abilities she was as helpless as a child. She saw Zeratul hiding in the shadows and could not shake the feeling that he was laughing at her.

"Do not stare at me templar! I warn you!"

"And you will do what Kerrigan? Claw at me with your nails? You are powerless now and I alone can even bother to help you."

"I do not need your help or anyone else's for that matter. I can take care of myself."

"It is a shame Duran could not change your personality as well as your appearance. Without my help you will be dead and I will once again have a quiet cell to myself."

"I would never need the help of a Protoss. I am Kerrigan the Queen of Blades."

"You know that is not true. I hope you realize that before it is too late."

Zeratul watch Kerrigan wrap her hand and fall asleep in the corner. He knew that Duran would return and soon she would be dead. Zeratul knew what Duran had done to Kerrigan and also knew that she could not survive Duran's extraction process. Duran had been using the power of the Xel' Naga crystals to extract the psionic energy from his Protoss DNA. Fortunately for Zeratul, he was a Dark Templar and his body had adapted to absorbing psionic energy through the vastness of space. Kerrigan was infused with energy from the Overmind and the Zerg. That supply was powerful and also limited. Soon Kerrigan's body would be unable to endure the stress of the process and then she would die. Zeratul looked at Kerrigan and saw for the first time her human form. Raynor had described what she had looked like before, but he refused to believe that she was even human. In bad times Zeratul thought back to the days of Raynor and Artanis, and hoped that they were ready for Duran and his armies.

On Shakuras, Artanis had gathered the Dark Templar forces. He knew that preparation to fight Duran's hybrids was key. With the Dark Templar, the Protoss would be able to counter the mysterious creatures under Duran's control. The fleet was ready to return to Aiur when a large terran fleet was detected near Shakuras space. The Artanis ordered his fleet to engage the terran ships and a familiar voice asked him to stand down.

"Easy there pal, were the good guys."

"Raynor?"

"The one and only Artanis, now call your ships back before all Hell breaks loose."

Artanis called his ships back and the two commanders met on Shakuras. Artanis was glad to see Raynor and notice he was commanding a Dominion fleet."

"Tell me Raynor, why do you carry the banner of Emperor Mengsk and his command his ships?"

"We were sent to ask the Protoss for help. Whatever these aliens are, they are attacking Dominion outposts. Mengsk feels he needs help and needs me to ask for assistance."

"But why do you wish to help Mengsk in his request."

"If I don't those aliens will kill innocent people. I can't allow that to happen."

"You are truly a noble spirit Raynor. Fenix would be proud, but you are mistaken about our enemy. They are not aliens, they are the hybrids that Zeratul had seen long ago. Duran is in command of these hybrids"

"Duran? Haven't seen him in awhile. If that's true then he may be working with Kerrigan."

"No one has told you?"

"Told me what?"

"Kerrigan was captured by Duran. He now controls the Zerg broods and has Kerrigan prisoner."

"Ha...about time someone put that bitch on ice. I don't like the idea of having Duran in control of the Broods though."

"I share your sentiment and know that we must stop Duran before he decides to launch an all out assault. We must return to Aiur and plan our next course of action."

"Sounds good to me, if the Protoss are willing to agree to a treaty with the Dominion, you will have the support of the entire terran population."

"I hope that such a truce can be formed. We will need all the help we can muster and we must fight side by side to win the day. I only hope that the council will see the need for such a union and hope that common sense will prevail."

"I don't think the council will have much choice once those hybrids come knocking on Aiur's door."

"I truly hope that it will not come down to that. My people are stubborn and many refuse to believe that we need the help of the terrans or the Dark Templar."

"I know the type of guy your talking about all too well. All too well."

The two fleets turned course towards Aiur and hoped that they were not greeted by a planet once again decimated by war. On Korhal, Mengsk was receiving more and more bad news. The attacks were now striking against key areas of military power inside the Dominion. Construction yards and research centers were being ravaged by these unknown aliens. Mengsk had sent a fleet with Raynor and now had only the elite guard to protect his empire. One thing the crisis had managed to do was create a wave of terror in the numerous rebel factions. New recruits were pouring in to fill the Dominion ranks and the whole populous was behind the emperor. Mengsk needed a victory against these aliens and need one quick. A victory would mean that the military might of the Dominion would stand against this new threat. Most conventional weapons had failed and Mengsk needed to call in the big guns. A trap was set in motion with a large terran outpost as the bait. Manning this outpost were several of the larger factions of rebel fighters. Even if the plan failed, he would be eliminating one problem. The outpost was built near a major mining operation in the deserts of Beta 6. The base was located in a large valley and was the perfect place to spring a trap. With the factions was sent an elite ghost troop with orders to shadow the operations and to eliminate any hostile aliens.

The desert sands of beta 6 cooled under the night sky. The outpost was at peace as the sounds of desert bugs and birds was all to be heard. The guards sat in cold steel bunkers and waited for an attack. They share a smoke and a few bottles of beer and wonder what kind of asshole put them on this God forsaken rock. For two men nature begins to call loud and hard, and both leave the safety of the bunker to answer the call. The move into privacy but in the range of a nearby turret. A lone science vessel sails overhead and the night is quiet. Another marines leaves the bunker for some fresh air and another smoke. He pulls a cigarette out and fumbles for a lighter. A few seconds later he's enjoying that fine mix of tobacco and beer and looks over for the other two marines. They are headed back and he goes to put out his cigarette. The three return to the bunker and hop inside. In a flash the three men are hauling ass from the bunker and screaming like madmen. The guards rush over to the bunker to see the mutilated body of the fourth private. The alarm sounds and the special agent ghosts spies the action.

The flood lights kick in and the base is a whirl of activity. Every man on the base is up and armed for a full engagement. The wraiths are scattered and immediately start circling the base. As according to plan, the wraiths begin to dive bomb the area and release paint bombs. The paint sprays the area and soon the entire outpost is covered. As expected, the creatures are also soaked in bright orange paint. With a target, the marines and tanks begin to focus on the painted creatures. Tank fire and guasse rifles begin to pound the alien lines. The semi invisible warriors charge forward and being to slash away at troops and tanks alike. A large, tall creature charges in on all fours and slashes the nearest tank with its claws. The it reels up on its hind legs and a psionic storms erupts over the wraiths and marines. The storm sends the fighters crashing to the ground and the energy collapses the terran soldiers skulls. Another creature runs forward and dives into the sands. Nearby soldiers, are shredded by psionic blades as they pierce the surface into their legs. The base defenses begin to fail as the creatures overrun the outnumbered defenders. The marines and tanks continue to fire but the creatures do not appear to be dying. The relentless tide has the few remaining troops pinned down inside the buildings and the ghost is ordered by Mengsk to carry out his final orders. He removes a small laser from his pack and attaches it to his rifle. A set of coordinates are programmed into the laser computer and the launch codes are authorized.

"Nuclear Launch Confirmed"

The long wait begins as the ghost remains motionless on the hill overlooking the battle. The pinned marines have been overtaken and the creatures begin to tear apart the base. Twenty more seconds to go as the terran buildings burn and fall. Ten more seconds until impact, the creatures have spotted him. Five more seconds, the creatures are charging towards him.

"Missile Delivered"

The ghost turns and runs for dear life with the creatures in hot pursuit. The missile detonates and the sky is filled with an intense, bright light. The ghost is flung forward and sees that his pursuers were not so lucky. The small army is enveloped with the ruins of the terran base. The lone ghost reestablishes the video link with the emperor and surveys the ruins.

"Your plan was a success emperor. The nuclear missile has obliterated the enemy forces."

"I am glad to see these creatures are not as invincible as many believe. A little paint and a silo class nuke does the trick. You did good kid, ya did real good."

"Thank you my emperor. Shall I return to Korhal?"

"You may, but first bring me a trophy. I'm sure you won't find a whole body, but maybe you could get an arm."

"I'm sorry sir but there does not appear to be much left. Wait sir, there appears to be movement inside the kill zone."

The video link showed the dirt part and up rose a lone creature. It was followed by another, then another, until the whole area was a sea of aliens. Mengsk saw that the creatures had survived and they appeared unharmed.

"The creatures have survived. I repeat, the creatures have survived."

"Abort the mission and return back to the fleet."

The link was terminated and Mengsk was without a plan. Not even a nuke could kill them, how could he fight such a creature. More appropriately, who?
