Mengsk had seen many adversaries in his day, but none could compare to the power and devastation that plagued him now. These beings were a mystery and he had no idea how to fight such creatures. Mengsk looked out over his capital city and look past onto the horizon. They would be coming soon and there was nothing he could do to stop them.
"Transmission from Commander Raynor"
"About damn time, patch it through."
"Mengsk, I have found the Protoss and they are willing to negotiate an alliance. We are on route to Aiur and they require you to be there with as many ships as possible."
"And leave the Dominion defenseless from these aliens? I can not allow that."
"Look, if you do not comply then the Protoss may just leave you to rot. They know what these things are and the one thing they aren't are a new alien race."
"If they aren't aliens then what the Hell are they?"
"It's a long story, but to make it short, a man by the name of Samir Duran has created an army of hybrid warriors using Zerg and Protoss DNA."
"Hybrids? Incredible, how was he able to do it?"
"Look Mengsk, I don't have all the details, but I do know that if you are not at Aiur when we return then you can call the alliance off."
"I do not appreciate being ordered by the likes of you Raynor."
"Well get use to it because either you show or you can kiss your Dominion goodbye."
"Transmission has ended"
Mengsk was left with little choice. He could stay and watch the Dominion fall or he could join the Protoss and Raynor. He didn't really like either choice but then again, he didn't really have to like it. On the other side of the transmission, Raynor too expressed his displeasure in his situation.
"I can not believe I'm helping that son of a bitch. I should let him and his Dominion crash and burn."
"You know that we can not allow that to happen. It is not fair for the innocent should suffer on behalf of tyrants like Mengsk."
"Yeah your probably right. Still I can't help feeling he's getting exactly what he deserves."
"Dealing with stubborn and proud individuals is never easy."
"I wouldn't call Mengsk proud or stubborn Artanis. Maybe psychotic or a lunatic, but not stubborn. Are you having troubles with politicians."
"I fear that the council is being less than cooperative in dealing with Duran."
"Council? What council?"
"After the reconstruction of Aiur began, the tribes formed a council made of the tribe elders. They were created to assist me in my duties as Praetor and to represent each tribe during reconstruction. Zeratul was the representative for the Dark Templar, but he was lost years ago. Without a representative for the Dark Templar the council began to build a resistance to the rejoining of the tribes. They have become more and more difficult to reason with and have become more influential."
"That doesn't sound real encouraging. Are you sure they will except our help and the Dark Templar?"
"They may not have a choice if they wish to survive. I believe that Duran will attack the Protoss soon and we will be powerless to stop them alone."
"Well, if you need me, I am ready to fight with ya."
"It is good to have you at my side Raynor. You have always fought bravely with many of our finest warriors."
"Ah, now don't go getting all mushy on me Artanis."
"Mushy?"
"Never mind."
"Praetor Artanis. We have detected a strange signal coming from a nearby planet. It would appear to have a Protoss signature. Shall we investigate?"
"There is no Protoss encampment here. Is it your brethren?"
"No Praetor, it is not a Dark Templar signal."
"It may be Duran himself, and if it is we might be able to end the conflict here and now. Set a course for that planet and prepare for battle. I would suggest Commander that you do the same."
"Never a dull moment with you guys, eh Artanis?"
"Let us hope that we can end this once and for all."
The two fleets turn as one and headed for a small rim world. The signal that the Protoss had received was the beacon from Zeratul's downed scout. It had been activated since Duran had captured him on this planet when he had launched an unsuccessful attack against Duran and his hybrids. Amazing that it had remained active after all these years and soon it would finally serve its purpose. A mile away sat Duran's main facility, a large steel fortress under the cover of trees. Inside Duran had his laboratory and holding cells. On the outside, Duran had his hybrid guards patrol the perimeter. The fortress was also protected by an automated assault system to protect his facility from ships of any nature.
Duran had a busy day before him and now set to tend to his prisoners. Kerrigan was weak and only needed to be carried out. She was a shell of her former self and could barley speak or stand. Zeratul was always a problem. When he was first caught, Zeratul had to be restrained and even then he fought back. The collars were of little help, for Zeratul could absorb a great deal of pain from the collars electrodes. With the hybrids, Zeratul was less inclined to fight back. He had tried to resist before and his right arm was almost severed from his body. After he did not resist the hybrid guards but he was always watching. Watching for a weakness to exploit or a flaw in their structure. This made him dangerous, even if he didn't lash out.
Both Kerrigan and Zeratul were lead into the main laboratory for extraction. The process used was very painful and it was quite effective at what it did. Since both Zerg and Protoss DNA react to Xel' Naga crystals it was easy to create an extraction process. The Protoss and Zerg draw power from the crystals, but like a door that swing both ways, that energy can be drawn from a Protoss or Zerg. Duran had control over a Zerg brood and they were at his disposal at anytime. Protoss DNA was hard to find and those taken from Aiur were killed by the extraction process inside of four sessions. Zeratul was an exception and had provided Duran with enough Protoss energy to last him a lifetime. Zeratul was a Dark Templar and they can regenerate their energy from the environment. This never-ending supply had served Duran well and soon Kerrigan would provide a final piece to the puzzle. Kerrigan had the energies of the first Overmind and that kind of power would make him a god.
Kerrigan would be drained first and then all of her energy would be his. Zeratul stood by and watched as Duran orchestrated the scientists. Duran looked over and saw Zeratul overseeing the operation.
"Fascinating isn't it? Soon Kerrigan will be dead and I will rise up in her place."
"You are quite proud of your accomplishments but you do not know what power you are dealing with."
"On the contrary, I am well aware of what is transpiring here. You are the lost soul."
"How could you know of such things. What kind of being are you terran?"
"Being? Well I will say that you are quite the deductive mind. I am not terran as you believe."
"Then what are you, Xel' Naga?"
"Please, they were eliminated long ago. I am the lesser form of what she once was."
"Kerrigan? The Overmind made her what she is and that abomination did not live long enough to create another."
"True, but the Overmind had begun a new creation. Kerrigan had proven a great asset to the Zerg. The Overmind had taken me from a science vessel and had begun to morph me into a second Zerg-Terran hybrid. Sadly, the Overmind was destroyed and I awoke not terran and not Zerg. I am incomplete, but when Kerrigan's energy is combined with my DNA I will finally achieve my rightful position as lord of the Zerg. But why stop there, if I add the energy of the Protoss, I will be unstoppable. My hybrids shall ravage this sector and soon we will move out to plague all forms of life."
"You are truly a mad creature. You will mean the death of us all."
"That is one thing I can assure you that you will not have to worry over. I do not intend to stop the extraction process, I will take all of your energy for my own."
"Sir, Kerrigan has completed the extraction process. Our scans indicate that she has been completely drained of Zerg energy."
"Excellent, prepare Zeratul for extraction."
"What about Kerrigan?"
"Kill her. The queen is dead, long live the king."
