I've been playing DragonLance and other RPG's quite a bit of late - but have found that they are just too hard to finish. I keep dying, and for this I began to question my abilities at even playing, I couldn't win no matter what I did. So I joined a melee game on that evil map Hunters. (Not that it really is that old to me anymore, I rarely have time to play) So I was in a random public game with a couple of clan mates, twin Zerg no less against a public Terran partner and myself.
I started in the best on Hunters, the top left corner and my partner was bottom middle. I ended up Protoss and I know that on any 128x128 or bigger map as toss I can go forge first and have 2 cannons to beat the 6 ling rush - and with 2 Zerg clannies as opponents I was sure I would be seeing 12 lings on route. So I made my standard tight base with forge and pylon blocking the cannons between the nexus and my partner started off solidly as well. The attack was pitiful at best, they sent about 10 lings at me and 16+ at my partner at the same time, his 2 bunkers chewed the lings to a stain as did my 6 zealots and 2 cannons. I went 2 gateways, assimilator and core, sent 4 zealots to scout the top middle and blocked the choke securing my 3 bases there. My 4 zealots found an orange expansion attempt at the top right that I crushed and I started my top middle expansion and my natural seconds later. My partner was great out of the gates but lacked the depth to make it to the offensive side of his shell and paid dearly for his inability to expand. The red Zerg launched a full frontal on him with lurkers and did a 6 OL drop in his back door. I sent observer, 12 zealots and 4 DTs to save his sorry butt but he quit before I got there, so I cleaned up the mess and it was 2v1. I had 3 solid bases, 2 possible expansions and knowledge of 2 empty starts and was on the way to check the bottom right. Here I got lucky and found orange's attempt at taking this base, I quickly dispatched this with the remnants of my attack force and then lost my guys with a red squad of 12 mutas that hit hard and fast. I knew with red still unchecked he had at least 4 possible bases mining that could have my in a world of hurt - so I decided to get my 4th going, as my main was running low on ca$h anyway. I took the bottom right and started on some corsairs to deal with the muta threat.
They finally came together and made me pay for trying to rule the board - 12-24 mutas (a big juicy clump) and 8+ OL's came to my main from red and started unloading lings, lurkers and hydras - at my top middle base orange dumped in 10+ OL's of hydras and I let the PSI storm fill the sky! With no less than 3 fully charged HT's at each base I reigned about 5 storms over each Zerg attack force, reducing them to a fine crimson mist and upon checking my inventory was only short about 7 cannons at 3 bases and a few pylons. I had a nice stockpile of minerals, gas was good as well but my military forces were somewhat lacking (anyone whose played with me has seen this before). So I slammed up to 4 stargates and 8 gateways at 4 locations and started pumping, well anything I could. I took the top right base, it was fated to be the site for challenge the rest of the game.
I had 6 'sairs and began to OL hunt, a first find of no less than 30 red OL's was a great gift, but my carelessness and greed led them to kill half and then the corsairs died to massed hydras, so up goes the fleet beacon (I know, too reactionary). Well, 6 more were ready so I went the other way…
NOTE: When playing a 2v2 it's INCREDIBLY important to keep pressure on both opponents. There are too many times when you will try to kill one and make it a 1v1, only to have the other guy massing at the top of his tech tree and walk over you when he hits max supply. I like to take one guy, force him to defend or replace something then hit the other to keep them wondering who I'm coming after next, the paranoia keeps them on their heels and unless they can focus their efforts you can keep them contained with good recon.
I found that orange had spread his OL's out so I went on a round up, using way points to chase them back to a group to sue my splash advantage and keep the 'sairs together. I noticed orange was mined out at his main and my 3 expansion crushing attacks had his last few drones commuting… this sends only one message loud and clear !!!!!!!!! So I sent my 8 zealots, 3 goonz, 2 archons, 1 observer and 2 HT to his base storming the lurkers and obliterating his base. I saw his drones and a few OL's running, I let them go and kept him off his side. I now controlled the top and right sides of the map - they had the left with the bottom middle and natural clear.
Red responded to my attack as any goo player would, he sent 50+ hydras to my top right base and with no warning and no effort eliminated my presence there with at maximum a loss of 1 hydra. Oh well, I still had 2 producing bases and had orange in the worst shape. I have a 3 month old chocolate lab, he wanted to go outside to the can, so I asked if we could pause to let the dog out, they quite politely replied with F*** You I built 3 more cannons at the key spots and let the dog out, got a beer, took a leak myself and came back, my main was under hard attack with 2 squads of mutas and my bottom right was under attack with 30 or so hydras left (gotta love archons and DT's). So I moved in stormed the mutas and saved my main, decided that they were back to massing hydras and went reavers. I blocked the bottom choke to the top middle with 4 reavers and 2 archons, 3 HT's and started massing goonz and zealots. There was an endless supply of hydras that met their makers at the hands of my reavers. I moved an observer up to see what I could see and noticed 8 lurkers protecting the middle base, orange was in full production there, so I positioned 2 HT's and 3 storms later I had a clear path of no lurkers left ;o) My reavers inched forward clearing the orange base, I sent 24 zealots and 8 goonz, 6 scouts and 6 corsairs into the mid left, reds main and found little resistance - he fell and I had 95% of my force left. We all know the map, the only remaining start is bottom left, red had the start, orange had the natural - I sent a goon to each mineral patch on the map to stop any futile attempts at reviving themselves and found each had started a hatch. I let the goonz on patrol, I moved forward into the final encampment…
Orange fell with 4 sunkens and a few lings under his command, no match for my combined forces and I crushed forward - I hit red's front line of a few scattered troops red has paused the game all ally, this is boring, I'm not having any fun
AidanEnos: What was your reply earlier????
AidanEnos: You'll be dead soon anyway, then you can go play with yourself and have fun!
AidanEnos resumed the game.
Waiting for Red….
Orange had quite craftily built his last hatch at the bottom land portion of the top right base, I eliminated him and victory was at hand.
Kills:
AidanEnos = 983
Red = 300 ish
Orange = 200 ish
Terran = 40 ish
