Hey everybody, I hope you like the report =)

I am an all toss player. It hasn’t always been that way, but my terran sucks and if my zerg goes up against a good terran the average game lasts around 6 minutes, although I have surprised myself before. Anyway, I feel that PvT is strong with several ways to counter heavy metal, PvZ is tough, but definitely fun and very possible to win. Let’s just say Corbalt has inspired all us little zealot rushers out there… PvP takes some time to figure out, is it a little boring, but can be cool.

I’ve been practicing with just toss for a little while now and last night I decided to start a new account to play ladder with. Questing after the obligatory ten wins, I logged on to b.net and started making pubbie games on Temple. I faced a decent terran first, but I had no trouble expanding and ran him over with goon, z, templar once I was maxed out. I got close to ten wins with little trouble but then lost two PvP games, one to an early expand that I shoulda put more pressure on, the second to 4 DTs about 30 seconds before my observer popped out =( At 9-2 I created game 1v1temple!$% and waited for the chance to get my last win before going to bed. Fredb joined my game shortly. He had 4,00 some odd wins and 900 or so losses. Now, if you ask me, a b.net record is no real testament to someone’s true skill level, but I figured that this guy has played over 5,000 games on this one account, he must know something about the game. I start the game and choose protoss, he goes random.

EARLY GAME SCOUTING

I get the bottom start position and fred gets the left, as protoss as well. I make a pylon on 7 and scout counterclockwise. I went on to build one gate on 10, another on 12, and then a pylon on 13. At this point my scouting probe ran up the ramp on the left and found a warping pylon at the top of it. I headed further into fred’s base as I warped in an assimilator and soon after a cybercore. I had made one zealot out of my first gate, setting the rally points for the top of my ramp. In fred’s base I found an assimilator and a pylon supporting one gate. I searched in vain for his cyber core. As a zealot popped out of his gate I ran back to the pylon at the ramp. No core. I ran back to his nexus. At this point I had 2 zealots and was about to make a robo facility and he was just warping in a core. I’m thinking “maybe this guy’s life consists of joining game after game of compstomp and he gets some kind of gratification out of having more wins on his record than all but a hand full of people on bnet.” As I warped in my robo, I thought to check his natural. I clicked for the probe to gather minerals at his natural. The probe was fried by a cannon at his ramp and hit from the 2 zealots there. I didn’t get to see his nat but I knew there must be a nexus nearly done there.

FIRST BLOOD

My zealot count was up to 3 and as soon as my robo facility finished I started a shuttle and warped a support bay, observatory, followed by a forge and another gate. I wasn’t worried about an early tech threat because of the late core and I figured my 3 zealots could hold do to his one gate and lack of early troops. As my shuttle finished and I started a reaver, 3 zealots came running towards my ramp. He saw my 3 and ran back. I started 2 more zealots in my gates. Just before the two zealots popped out his force of three zealots and two dragoons charged up my ramp. I ran towards my gates without engagement and as soon as the new zealots popped I shift clicked for 2 to attack one goon then the other and I engaged the zealots with my own. One of his three zealots ran after the two that were attacking the goons but didn’t do much. He lost two zealots and a goon and I lost a zealot before he ran. His remaining zealot and a straggling goon both escaped but I was able to trap his last goon in my base. 2 more zealots popped and I commanded them to attack the goon which was able to get a good look at my base before the z’s killed it.

COUNTER!!!

I warped in a cannon to the left side of my nexus, started training an observer, and loaded my reaver up, hotkeying it as “0” I had around 7 zealots guarding my ramp and 2 goons on the way. I flew the shuttle the short distance to his base, but when I spotted a cannon and two goons to the south of his probes I flew back, taking 1 or 2 hits. I also saw that he had a robotics facility out with a support bay. I felt that I was a little ahead after the early fight, so I sent all my ground troops to his min only, along with my shuttle and an observer. The observer spotted a pylon and cannon at his choke as well as the one on his cliff.
I didn’t know how functional his expansion was, but I knew I had to attack before his resource advantage kicked in. I quickly warped in another cannon back at my nexus because of the reaver tech I had seen, started goon range upgrade, and then patrolled my troops into his natural. I landed my reaver on his cliff which killed the lone cannon there, and my ground troops were able to take out his 2 zealots and the cannon. My weakened reaver was killed by a dragoon as I started to pound on his probes, but my shuttle got back to my base. I still had like 5 zealots and two goons, so when 3 goons came down his ramp, I quickly kicked their asses and ran into his base, leaving one zealot to pound on his nexus. I was feeling confident at this point, especially when I found only one gate which I was able to kill along with the cannon by his nexus. I started to pound on a goon that had retreated back to the probes and then two reavers dropped out of a shuttle right behind the goon. One salvo of scarabs killed 4 zealots and another took the two weakened goons. I had 4 goons at his min nat, where I had set my rally points and they were able to finish off the nexus and pylon before I ran as his shuttle dropped the two reavs from a relatively safe distance. I was really still feeling good as I had killed his expo but my troop count was now pretty low as I hadn’t been great about keeping my gates busy.

OOOPS…..

My goons were about half way back to my base when his reavers unloaded on my plateau, killed a cannon and started creeping menacingly towards my probes. It was about then that the “oh shit” light turned on in my head. I ran my workers to the right, but 2 scarabs caught up to the back half of them and about 10 probes exploded into blue dust. My goons arrived back agonizingly slowly and came from the north to attack the shuttle, which had loaded the reavers as was running. I figured two reavers may have been able to take my now 6 goons, but I guess fred was content with the damage he had done and didn’t want to risk losing his drop as his troop count must still be low as well. I sent my probes back to work.
I was a little pissed at myself at this point for giving up the advantage by failing to keep up troop production and having my economy cut by about a third. I had a good amount of minerals and gas though so I replaced my lost cannon, added one more a bit further out, started a new reaver, added two more gates, a citadel of adun, and a nexus at my natural. I also started weapons upgrade and began a second forge.

ATTACKING FROM ALL FRONTS

My new gates were just finishing and I had 8 goons which I sent back up to his base. Soon after my new nexus was online and I was producing constant drones from both. I continued to pump goons from 4 gates, rallying them outside my natural. My observer was still near the top of his ramp and I saw two goons there. I started to charge in with the 8 goons I had immediately available. I gained the top of the ramp as the goons ran. I attack-moved into his base. As I did this I unloaded my one reaver I had at the bottom of his probe line. My goons were immediately encountered by 3 reavers, two being unloaded from the shuttle. I focused fire and was able to kill 2 before the destructive force of scarabs finally took their toll. While watching this battle and microing my goons, I had been hitting my reaver hotkey and pressing the R button repeatedly. When the goons were dead and I brought my view back to his nexus, there were no probes left. Two reavers and a goons came crawling and running, respectively, towards my reaver. The goon had started to hit the shuttle and I couldn’t get it back before two scarabs ripped into my reaver. I ran the shuttle across the valley.
I now felt that I had stemmed any comeback. I continued to power troops out of now 6 gates. Both nexi were at around max efficiency and I soon had about 25 goons, assorted speedy zealots and 3 DT, having gotten the temp archives right after my attack. When I reached his base his 5 or so goons and 4 reavers weren’t enough, especially after the sound of DT’s began to fill the air. As I ran up his ramp he offered a “gg” and left.

Thanks for reading my report. I would appreciate any comments on this game, especially any good thoughts on PvP, maybe how effective or wise it is to get an early expo in this match up. IMO, there’s just too many options to beat down the expo with, but I’m open to any suggestions on how to hold it.
