In the years before the rise of the Dominion, there were only a handful of rebel militias that stood against the Confederate nation. After Mengsk seized control, thousands of militias sprung from the Confederate ashes. They were mainly harmless platoons scattered without effective leadership or any possible future against Dominion rule. They took to the life criminals and outlaws, pillaging and terrorizing colonies on the outer rim of Dominion space. They were more of a pestilence than a threat to Mengsk and he was content to let a few band of rouges bury themselves in public opinion. Many view militias as locust and believed the Dominions media portrayal of militias as violent marauders. Two years after the Brood Wars, Jim Raynor united several of the largest factions and launched a civil war against Mengsk and his Dominion. This coalition met success after success and moved closer and closer to the Dominion homeworld of Korhal. Sadly, during the first offensive against Korhal, Raynor’s ship was shot down over a Dominion installation. With Raynor gone, the rebellion scattered and the war ended.
Those that were not captured or killed, retreated to lick their wounds and return to a life of piracy and theft. However, there were those that refused to let the rebellion die so quickly, and we believed that we could carry out the plans that Raynor had laid out for a full invasion of Korhal. The strategy was to leave the Dominion blind and crippled by destroying both the planetary power grid and destroying the Dominion Arsenal Storage. Raynor’s assault on the arsenal was a failure because the power grid was still operational. It was decided that the power grid had to be destroyed first, so an assault against the arsenal could be possible. We realized such an operation would be difficult. We were an army of five thousand, but without artillery or air support, we would be cut down like weeds. We needed to acquire mechanized firepower in order to fight. Much of our equipment was lost in the retreat and we had only our selves and the guns in our hands to fight with.
Our intelligence found a small outpost on the Dominion Rim. A weapons store and tactical center for this part of space. Isolation played our friend and foe, as it was alone and far from any real support, but it was possibly the most heavily defended fortification this side of Korhal. It was estimated to have three divisions of one thousand men on guard. Ten mechanized siege tank and goliath divisions. The compound housed a full air force of five squadrons and three capital ship escorts, as well as a full nuclear cache. It had seen action in both wars and had prevailed every time defeating Zerg and Protoss alike. It seemed foolish to try and fight such a monster, but the rewards would be well worth the risk. If we prevailed, we would have the power to crush the Dominion and Mengsk. The operation was set for first light; the advantage of surprise would be with us.
The small army settled in for a much needed rest as dusk settled over the sky. The morning would bring carnage that no one was truly ready for. Those that contemplated their fate did their best to cope with destiny. Some chose to pray, while others enjoyed what could be, a last drink with friends. For the commanding officer of this rebel army, consolidation lies in a pen and paper.
“Ever since we lost Jim, I can’t feel that this army lost its soul. The men do not fight or march with the same inspiration and I too feel incomplete. Jim and I had seen our worlds crumble before and we had seen the rise of a few tyrants. It took a long time for him to trust me, but I doubt he’s ever truly forgiven me. I look back and can remember a time where he would have died for me, and I for him. Just as we had been able to gain that kind of loyalty back, he’s killed in action and I’m alone for the first time in a long time. I swore my life to him and I will destroy Mengsk and his Dominion, no longer for my own vengeance, but for Jim. Personal log: Sarah Kerrigan.”
The night faded into morning and the army was on the move. They passed through the valley and could see the compound in the distance. The cold, steel walls that seem to stretch high into the heavens blocked the morning light. Its shadow creep along the sand and the majesty and terror of Golgotha could be seen. The sand in front of the walls was littered with the bodies of the defeated, zerg, protoss and human alike lay sunken and eerie. Among the bodies were the remains of tanks and other wrecks. All were burnt and weathered.
A frontal assault would prove a grand suicide, but might be an even better diversion. With a thousand at her side, Kerrigan elected to lead the front assault. The remaining troops were sent too the rear and were to wait until Kerrigan was heavily engaged. Kerrigan and her army boldly marched forward and waited for a hail of gunfire to envelope them. It was like being marched down death row, with the chair in plain site. The army made it half way down the valley floor, and then a private next to Kerrigan took a bullet to the head. His brain painted his visor red and he was dead before he hit the ground. Several dozen fell to gunfire and the rest scattered to find cover.. Kerrigan was able to duck behind a siege tank and assess the situation.
The entire squad is pinned down with sniper fire picking off anything that moves. The siege tank she ducked behind is rusted through and couldn’t withstand a swift kick let alone a hail of bullets. Worst of all, squads of wraiths were closing on their position. Kerrigan loaded her lockdown rounds and disengaged her cloak. The first wraith flew past and Kerrigan clipped its wing. A lockdown field enveloped the craft and was consumed by gunfire. Those on the ground fired into the air and blindly began to strike the cloaked enemy. Wraith lasers began to mow down man after man, but the overwhelming numbers brought the flying menaces down.
The threat of an air raid was over, but now siege tanks began to pound the ever-dwindling numbers of Kerrigan’s division. Kerrigan was left with few choices, stay and die or charge and die. If the other divisions had attacked as planned, the enemy would be too confused to fight.
“Beta division, this is Kerrigan. What is your position, are you engaged?”
“Negative, we are having trouble penetrating the defenses. The enemy position is heavily fortified. Should we send you support?”
“No, you get your men over that wall and we’ll meet you in the middle. If not, then I’ll see you in Hell, Kerrigan out.”
Kerrigan looked up and saw that the wall had defenders lined up straight down the length of the structure. Behind them were siege tanks and another possible squadron of wraiths, possible Battlecruisers. She checked her power levels and had enough energy for ten minutes of cloak. She loaded her rifle and got ready to move.
“On my word we charge the wall. Keep your guns up and your ass moving. I’ll see you on the other side.”
Kerrigan engaged her cloak and rushed forward. The five hundred survivors of the shattered division followed their lieutenant into the gauntlet. Kerrigan began to target the wall defenders and brought many crashing over the wall. Her men took the brunt of the punishment as the wall defenders laid down a stream of hot lead. Kerrigan ran towards the wall and hastily pulled an explosive charge from her pack. The wall defenders were preoccupied by the division and took little notice of Kerrigan. With a ten second-timer set, Kerrigan turned and ran towards her division. Her cloak energy ran dry and she once again was a visible target. A spray of bullets embedded into her armor and she crashed to the ground. A Dominion sniper saw the prize fall and set up for the kill. As he trained his scope on Kerrigan, a blinding light erupted in his eyes. The explosion torn through the walls infrastructure and sent metal, man and fire crashing to the dirt. The supporting siege tanks found themselves caught in the steel avalanche and were crushed under the sheer weight.
The broken division surged into the wreck and began to kill any survivors. Abandoned siege tanks were turned against their former masters and they now rained death from above on the trapped Dominion soldiers. Reinforcements poured out from the barracks, but they were gunned down as soon as they stepped into the clear. Dominion soldiers on the opposite walls turned to fire down on Kerrigan, but beta division charged the defenses and forced the Dominion soldiers back.
In the end, the remaining Dominion soldiers were forced to surrender and were sent into the desert. Kerrigan ordered the immediate airlift of all confiscated vehicles and boarded her new battlecruiser renamed the Raynor. With a mechanized army and a fleet of ships, Kerrigan set out to keep a promise to an old friend and pay a visit to an old acquaintance.
But at the same time, far off in a Dominion Prison at Korhal, a man lies in an infirmary bed. He has a broken arm, and a large contusion on his head. He isn’t sure where he is. He’s doesn’t even know who he is. He woke up in this bed five days ago and he wasn’t sure what had happen. He knew he was in a prison and that he must have done something very wrong, though he’s not quite sure what that is. He tries to move and is able to stand to his feet. He looks to his chart to see what his name is. He sees that he has a broken arm, a concussion and a contusion on the right side of his head. But there’s no name. He wanders off and looks to the beds to his right and left. As he wanders around a young man stops him in the hall.
“Sir, I did what you told me. There is a way to escape from the prison, but we need more time.”
“I’m sorry kid, are you talking to me?”
“Of course sir. Sir, its me, Private Davidson. We were captured and you ordered us to find a way out.”
“I’m sorry, but I have no idea what your talking about. And why are you calling me sir?”
“Sir, what did they do to you? What’s wrong?”
“I’m sorry, but I can’t help you. Maybe I should get a guard.”
“A guard? Sir, don’t you recognize me? Please, try to remember. What did they do to you?”
A group of guards rushed in and began to beat the young man to the ground. All he could do was watch as they dragged him away, bloody and broken.
“I’m sorry you had to see that. This war prisoners can be quite disturbed.”
He turned to see a man dressed in a military dress, flanked by soldiers. He was about fifty, with gray hair and a gray beard. He spoke very elegantly and address him as he was an old friend.
“I’m sorry, but who are you?”
“Ah, I see that the hit to your head did more damage then we thought. You were attacked here in the prison and suffer a broken arm and a rather nasty blow to the head. We weren’t sure if you would make it, but I knew a soldier of your caliber would pull through.”
“Soldier? Am I a prisoner here?”
“No, you were a spy so to speak. We had been trying to halt the activity of a terrorist group and you volunteered to infiltrate this prison and gain information from several incarcerated terrorists. Sadly, you were found out.”
“Terrorist?”
“I can see that you are a bit confused. I’ve come to take you out of here. We need you by my side and we need to get your wits together.”
“Thank you, I guess. I apologize but I didn’t get your name.”
“Of course I forgot, I am Emperor Mengsk, welcome home Jim.”
