Here I am again to tell another Chapter of "In the trenches of Vanilla SC" (Starring Flint). I have to tell ya...I've been really getting sick of Vanilla SC. The only reason I'm there at the moment is because I'm really getting close to 100 wins. When I went back to Vanilla that first time in a while, I had made the promise two play for only a couple of games. I started back with my massive record of like 43/32 and won quite a few games that night. My record just kept growing and growing....and now I've hit the 80's (for wins).
It's interesting to note that thinking back, 3/4 of my losses back then were for obviously bad reasons not known by me then (Aka: Playing BGH when I was a Turbo Newb and stopped SCV producion at 8 for the whole game. ect. :) . Anyway....off topic ;) . Well, I am obsessed with reaching the 100 wins mark (Then playing a game a well needed BW game.....) . Hell, I went this far so why turn back now? Records are pointless I know...But, I'm the kinda guy that sets a goal (No matter how stupid or pointless) and goes for it. Sorry about Flint's life saga for the last paragraph....I've been out of University for a while and writing all the time is something that kinda grows on you.
Now....On to the ACTION.
After playing a Dire game, and picking up some moves from the other guy :) (Still getting used with most of the maps) , I was ready for another game. Well, I did'nt feel like making a game of my own, because at least 7/8 of the players that join are Turbo Newbies. However, joining a 1 vs 1, I've noticed the better players occupy those (Don't ask me). I saw the first game that was playable (Non BGH) , and it was on Challenger. Needless to say, I accepted. It's hard to get a non BGH or Bloodbath game in vanilla sometimes.
Him: Zerg
Me: Terran
Early game: I prepared for the ling rush. Threw down a rax at 6 and worked from there. I soon had one marine standing in my SCV line and threw down another rax while making a marine. I also make my first depot somewhere in there and everything was lookin cool. The ling rush did'nt come when expected. I stepped down from red alert and figured either he was goin for a more powerful ling rush or teching.
Well the lings came in more force. I had my marines in my mineral line and they were brushed off. So he microed them to start smashing against my Reninery. Using the marines and some hold position I brushed them off the refinery. They ran away and went somewhere on my little Island. This was becoming annoying. At intervals they would make runs at my SCV line or buildings. Not too effective ling wise...but annoying to me. I send an SCV to my choke and make a bunker. Then another. I fill em up and am still pumping marines and SCV. The lings make another rush at one of my buildings. My marines finally shoot quite a few of well mircoed lings and the rest opt to run back to their base. They ran straight into the bunkers and there were no survivers. I look outside my choke and see a few hydras. Hmmm...most ling rushers on Vanilla don't tech to much while rushing (As they have not grasped the aspect of Mirco and Macro). This looks like it's gonna be a well needed (Non-Turbo Newbie) match on Challenger.
Mid Game: I get 2 factories, Academy and have a half-decent Marine force. I begin to tech to tanks and get seige mode, plus spider mines at the same time. I get a couple of vutures, and I plan to mine the two mineral patches. Damn...those Hydra's are still loitering at my choke (Just out of range of Bunkers). I know....most newbies don't chick on Hold Position in a case like this. I do a vulture run the Hydras, hoping they will run at my vulture and get lead back to my waiting bunker. They did'nt follow and they dented my vulture a bit.
Oh well. Just as this little attempt was concluded, my first tank rolls off the assembly line. I move it up to my choke and fire upon the Hydras. This works and they ran onto my bunkers. Quick question....do Hydras in Hold Position move anyway when a tank fires upon them? Ok....I'm thinking tank push, so I move out with my 18 + marines and 4 tanks. I also start work on a second CC that I can fly over to the island during the attack. Expand while attacking or counter-attacking if you can. He focuses on your attack...and you marco your economy and mirco your tank push every now and then.
I arrive at his choke and blast some hydras to announce, "It's tank push time, rise and shine". He replies with some about approx 6 mutas and various land forces. I was impressed. The first attempt to stop my tank push was unsuccessful. He found we was taking too my muta deaths. He did get a couple of tanks but I had like 3 more set down. Well...I had my SCV throw up a turret at my push area. He was attacking and attacking in waves...and the turret did it fair share of combat duty, when finally a zerg force came that I figured would overwhelm my outpost. I left it for dead and macroed my base more. I went back to marcoing: Making tanks, marines, seeing if my ecomomy is maximized and getting nessary upgrades for a few short moments. I notce a few green spots still on the mini-map by his choke. YEAH!!!! My outpost lived!!! Survived it with no micro on my part to boot :0 . The survivors were a tank, a full bunker, my turret and my reliable scv. Not much I can do with it now....but my SCV repaired everything it could, and I sent down what marines I could spare for the time and 3 tanks to try and get the push going again. Just as my tanks arrive two guardians attack my outpost and I say, "To hell with this for the time being....I got teching I gotta do now." I retreat everything outta there and start to get in order. I comstat is island and see he has expanded there...Whoa, that was quick. He even had a half decent defence set up. Panic gives me tart slap in the chops and I get down to work.
Late Game: I expand as well and hope his mutas don't rape it. I Throw down 2 starports and put a Control Tower on one and have the other make the first wriath. It's time for Flint to contest air control. (Inspiring music kicks in). The mutas did'nt find the expansion (for now) and I have half the anti-air done :) . My wraiths are now numbering about 9 or ten with the cloak upgrade.
I then see his muta pack arrive on the side of the island least defended. I also see one of them morphing into a guardian (I take this one guard morph as a sign of his lack of gas) and 3 Overlords giving detection. I assumed the rest of his guards were en-route from his base or whatever. I send my wraiths in un-cloaked and attack the Overlords first. My wraiths get knicked a bit (One really bad), but the powerfull air to air missles won the day and the Overlords were killed. I then cloaked and the muta pack accepted defeat and ran away just as their detection went down. I killed one as it was leaving and then focused on the Morphing egg (Destroying it).
I repaired the wraiths when I could afford to devote time to them. I began to get Goaliths and used all my spare gas to feed the hungry SV that were in production (I build the second Control Tower when I finished my wraith navy, knowing I would need it for more some of the craft up the tech tree). I had about 7 or eight SV and everynow and then I would find his muta navy somewhere on the map and get off a couple of irradicates before retreating to my island expansion were the turrets were my savehaven for him :) . I notice I have quite a few Goaliths, and decide on a Marine/Goalith/SCV/SV Tank push on his main. Just then he complains about lag. I start to get a nuke going while I start the tank push and move out of my base. He messages to me:
Him: You know, I really don't care about records.
Me: Neither do I (Well...I knida did this, time cuz I want my 100th win...but I really don't care about losing either. I learn the most when I lose.)
Him: Then please stop using the lag hack.
Me: Ummm...I'm not.
Him: Records are for losers.
Me: ok....but I not using any hacks.
*He leaves, giving me the win*
NooooooooOooOOOooOoOoooo. Damn. I have'nt gotten into a game of SC like that in while. I was just about to push his main too. I continued playing just too see what he had. I was out-produicing him now...His expansion had been neglected and the only guards his made were the two from the start. Feeling that my attck would have been quite successful...I took the game as a rightful win. I was still thirsty for more action and I created a game on Challenger, hoping that I could re-create another game that gets kinda intense.
This one will hopefully be a bit shorter as this BR is getting quite long. I hope none of you are bored.
Next Game:
Me: Toss
Him: Toss
His record was'nt that hot, but he still may a challenge.
Early-Game: I start my normal build and get a pylon on seven, gate on 8, gate on 9 and work from there. I have a few zeals and send one out to scout. I throw down another pylon and start a cyber-core for the goons that were soon to come. My zealot arrives and hits his wall-in cannon defence. I did'nt see much else that was scary. I'm praying he is not a turtle...I'm soo tired of cracking turtles these days. Not to mention, I find Toss turtles quite annoying (Templar/cannons all over the place). At this point he asks me, "Are U good?". I'm so sick and tired of answering this all the time. This time I reply, "No, I'm horrible" :).
Mid-Game: I have quite the goon army built and a zealot at his mineral natural seeing if he expands. I scout again with a probe. And see a few cannons at his choke. I decide to risk an attack. I attack with my 16+ goons and hit the choke full force. They break through the choke, but die to many more cannons and a handfull of zealots. My goons did their damage though :) . Yep, a turtle. He did'nt even have goons. Plus, from what I saw...no futher teching done on his part. I now decide the name of the game is, "Crack the turtle". I scout a second later to find that the attack I just did, scared the shit outta him...made like a TON more cannons.
Late-Game: Right after this attack I go into high speed. I make a few more goons to ward off any counter-attacks (LOL) that he may throw at me. I expand twice at the same time. One expansion at my mineral only natural, and I had a robo fac for the shuttle needed to expand to the nearby island. I got observers and saw he was'nt expanding. My observer also saw that he was throwing ALL of his money into cannons and his minerals were running out at his one base.
I close and rub my eyes for a second while sighing deeply. After a newbie Toss player cannons up to a point (Like A LOT of cannons), he forces you to go carriers. I really did'nt feel like making carriers...but I did was HAS to be done I suppose. Mass goons is what he wants from me....I'm not gonna give it to him. I threw down three Starports at my island and a fleet beacon. I was making pylons like crazy so as not to hold up carrier production. I shuttled over the probes from my finished out main. And got the two expansion running full blast. At this point I see a shuttle. Ok people...it's the reaver drop, relax people we are ready for this. He drops off one zealot that walks into the ONE cannon I made (At my mineral line) and dies. He says, "I see your not a newbie". I did'nt even send my goon army to meet the zealot attacker.
Well, after recovering from the massive zealot attack he had just had layed upon me, I get the 4 more intercepters upgrade. and get an attack upgrade as well for my air fleet. I was also throwing extra money every now and then into goon upgrades. He also dropped a shuttle load of probes on his island expansion that my observer noticed. To my suprise...they did'nt get to work right away and stood around on smoke break. I decided to drop only goons there to stop the expansion attempt. This would bee a good way to test his forces. He would attack them with whatever he had and I can see what I'm up against.
Well, nothing attacked them (Except the probes, that were killed). My 2 goons held the island for the rest of the game as they had a few cold-ones on the beach after kicking some probe ass. He FINALLY found my zealot guarding his mineral expansion and chased after it with a Scout. Then another scout joined the chase (I think it just popped out of his stargate). Two scouts. I laughed at his apparent non-expansion air force and decide to run my zealot onto his choke to see what is goin on. He dies to MANY cannons. Surprise, suprise.
The 7 Carriers SLOWLY made their way from way back home through the gate and I noticed I was at max supply. I have tons of goons and quite a few probes to boot. He then messages me.
Him: "Are you going to attack?"
Me: "Yes"
Him: "Ummm...how about now."
Me: "Ok"
I sent my carriers down to his base. I entered at the right side of his base. As I was on the way my observer notices him throw down another cannon behind his nexus at his finished out mineral line. I chuckled and thought of him saying, "Ok everyone....this last cannon is the "Alamo" rally point...It is our LAST line of defence!".
My carriers intercepted his long distance mining operation from his main to his natural. I assume he did'nt have enough to build his second nexus when he tried to expand with the idle probes. I click hold position with my carriers and the long-distance mining stops. I attack his un-cannoned area of the base (About 1/2 was undefended...and the other half was just packed with cannons) that was the side far away from the choke. I begin bashing him in and say, "Can we say turtle?". He does'nt respond. I say, "You did'nt even attack me once". This gets him angry and attacks my carriers with everything his has. a Few goons and the dreaded two scouts. I lose one carrier and send another one down. He then throws his zealots at me. Hmmm...dead. And he leaves before I finish his cannons.
I continued playing just to see how many cannons he had. I took a few pics to remember this by and for you too look at. Yet...I don't know the html or whatever to put them up. If somebody can give me a hand with that...I'll throw them up pronto. If you wanna see them...e-mail me at werrett@interlinks.net and they are in the mail (Worth a laugh). I looked at the end-game stats...and even though he made mucho cannons and I made one cannon, he only beat me by 3 or 4 structures. I also made 150+ more units than him, I believe. I then sighed and shut off the computer for the night.
This ends another tale of Flint's Vanilla SC nights.
Sorry about the length of this BR....but I was having fun writing this and wanted a good fair amount of detail.
Lessons learned:
-Toss Turtles are a pain in the ass. Fortunatly he did'nt have templars.
-If you create a game on Vanilla, chances are a newb is walkin in that door :( .
-Did I say much turtles suck?...oh yeah...I covered that.
Question: Do I get the longest BR award?
Oh well....Later folks. |
