good competition, I head on over to b.net on "nohunters".
I look for a 1v1 and, well, no one really wants to play 1v1
these days. So some guy finally bites and plays. He picks
Snowbound (the "pseudo-island" map) and we both random.
I get terran and he draws toss. Now this is going to be a tough
one. Terran is probably not my
best race on island maps, but what the hell. I spawn at 6, he at
12.
I start with a standard island build, going for early gas, one
barracks, factory, starport. I float my engineering bay to scout
around the nearby area for the bad guy (didn't know what race at
the time). Anyway, eventually, he finds my engineering bay w/
corsairs. Oh boy. Toss.. gonna be a long fight. So I scan his
base and see templar archive. So I think, watch the dt drop. I
build a few extra towers to a total of 3 which cover the base
pretty well. I expand to the 5 o'clock expansion, and set up a
bunker, tower, and barracks there. I scan around some more and
notice he's taken the 3 o'clock spot. I had 2 starports now, so
I had wraiths cranking out of 1 and dropships from the other.
His base was still pretty fledgling so I flew in 2 dropships w/ 1
scv, tank, and a bunch of marines/bats/medics w/ stim. I do some
pretty good damage to his base, but only minimal damage to his
mineral lines before he shuttled some dragoons and a reaver in.
Combined w/ the cannons, that was the end of that offense.
Things were pretty quiet while I consolidated my expansion and
scouted the left half. It was still pretty quiet, so I scanned
his main. He had 2 stargates and a fleet beacon. Hmm.. looks
like carriers. I had the sci facility by this time w/ the covert
ops. I wagered that lockdown would be more valuable than BCs
which would take too long to become effective. Build a bunch of
ghosts and started expanding to SW corner. I have dual comsats
so I scan every 2-3 minutes at every expansion, and he hasn't
expanded beyond his first. This meant he either a) sucked, or
b) was massing something evil like carriers, for an early
knockout blow. B was right and just as I'm dropping off an
expansion force in the SW corner, I see carriers over my first
expansion. Now I only had a bunker, about 5-6 marines a tank and
2 missile turrets at this base. But I did have 4 ghosts :). I
quickly went to work w/ lockdown and locked down 5 of his 6
carriers. My fleet of 10 wraiths scrambled from home base and
quickly dispatched his fleet. My total loss -- a turret, the
marines and the bunker. This bought me some breathing space as I
decided to build a 3rd starport and pump out more wraiths and sci
vessels.
By this time my SW expansion was underway.. and my opponent
conducted a psi-raid from the top of the ridge! D'oh! I didn't
station anything there, and paid the price. Owchie. I scanned
around and he still hadn't expanded, so I decided to stake an
attack on his expansion. Dropped in 3 dropships of tanks,
goliaths, marines, medics and some ghosts. I notice the arbiter
as I approach so I bring in the wraiths at the same time and
dispatch the arbiter --- but not before I notice 3 reavers
sitting there! D'oh! Before I could lockdown the reavers, my
invasion force was dead! My wraith killed the arbiter and the 3
reavers, but that wasn't my goal.
So back to lick my wounds as I see 4 more carriers above my main
w/ an arbiter! Uh oh! I locked down his fleet, but not before
he recalled 4 reavers inside my main! The wraiths took out the
carriers, but he recalled his reavers before they were killed
too. The damage wasn't too bad, one stargate, 2 supply depots
and an armoury (I had 2), but it was clevar of him to recall it
all back. Oooh. I swore
vengeance! During this time he had expanded to the island north
of my SW expansion. So I shuttled in 2 dropship of marines, but
he shuttled in templars as they were wrecking havoc and ended
that assault.
So by this time I have a nuke ready. I send in a dropship of
marines and 2 ghosts. But first I fly in and EMP his tempars,
then chase away his shuttle w/ my wraiths (I have about 18 now,
in various states of disrepair :). I EMP his nexus right after I
start the nuke. Fortune smiled upon me as he decided to sent his
scout fleet after my wraiths just as the nuke was coming down.
Boom! Expansion + probes and about 6 scouts in one nuke. Not
bad!
I'm getting really frantic though, because keeping the toss out
requires 100% effort, and ahem.. dropships suck! I see
another arbiter appear near my main, and just as my wraiths start
pounding on it, he recalls 6(!) reavers! He also escorts the
assault with 6 scouts. My sci vessel was nearby, so I popped his
observer and in desperation, EMPed his scouts & reavers. Of
course, in doing so, it took away my cloak energy too. But
scouts w/out shields are not so bad. Scouts went down quickly
and eventually the reavers. I was lucky again, nothing major
destroyed. 2 barracks, a few supply depots and a starport.
At this point, I was getting pretty worried. But the surprise
came. My opponent surrendered. Apparently, he was out of funds!
I managed to keep just one expansion ahead of him, and managed
to make his attempted invasions very costly for him. Not a
pretty victory at all, but a victory none-the-less.
Morale of the story? Don't know if there is one, except that I
had to work my butt off to stay alive. If I had played protoss,
I could have gotten away with building a bunch of templars and
psi-storming anything that got near the island :P. They have got
to make it easier for terrans to invade protoss bases. It's not
like the protoss really need DWeb that badly with the new pimped
up carriers and hallucination. If nothing else, just make those
damn shuttles unload marines way way way faster. It sucks
marines into the slaughter one at a time while you wait for the
others to unload.
Other thoughts, it's so damn hard to expand w/ terran on island
maps. That 100 gas shuttle for a shuttle makes it the most
expensive transport unit hands down, only to get a slow and weak
product.
Against the protoss on an island map, I found it excruciatingly
difficult to a) mount an offensive that doesn't get obliterated
w/ psi-storm or reavers and b) maintain map control. I
constantly felt like he was dictating where the action was and I
had to counter-punch. Maybe I was successful because I'm a fast
clicker and pretty good at micromanaging, but I'd swear, with the
zerg or protoss I'd have probably expanded at least 2 more times,
while being able to harass a little more succesfully.
Anyway, comments? Questions? Let me know what you think..
