No hunters was full of dead peopleas it is most of the time so I went and searched for a non hunters pubbie game and came across a 2v2 on dark continent. I was the 2nd and when the third came in, whose name was 'practice', the host by the name of arcknight said he was going to be with him. I said ok, as I often have this problem with a slow friend ;), when a fourth guy came in {can't remember his name) who had a record of 7-34. I immediately messaged arcknight and asked if we could ally in case my ally blew as much chunks as his record, and since he agreed we began with no problems.
Match up:
Omnipresent_one protoss near-center start position
and
(cant remember) terran about 9:00 but mid-left center
vs
arcknight protoss 6:00 start
and
'practice' zerg 4:00 start
Early game: I decided that my partner was going to be unreliable so that I should try to take one out with early dtemps. With that I began my conservative dt build, which starts out using a standard 7.5 pylon, (pylon halfway through 8th) 10 and 12 gate with scout on 10, 13 pylon, and 14 gas. Scouting the top part I found no enemies and immediately asked my partner to aide in the recon. I then decided to check on his progress to see that he was floating a barracks (???) from the back of his peon line to somewhere else and he had a depot up. My suspicions were beginning to be confirmed.
Soon he had found both enemies at the bottom part of the map, scouting the toss completely to reveal a hard zealot rush and barely skimming the zerg. Taking my peon, which had found nothing at all ;-<, I ran him on a suicide mission to see a lair already starting and two hatcheries.
Back at home I began a cyber core when I had around 3 or 4 zealots while constantly pumping probes/zeals/pylons, followed quickly by a citadel. Suddenly I saw my partner under attack by a buttload of zeals. Seeing his only defense consisting of two bunkers at his choke (not walled in) I knew he was a goner and sent my meager force of six zeals and two goons to aid him. By the time I got there all he had was his cc and a few depots, and even with my reinforcements a few zeals remained. If he had rushed me instead he might have finished me! Either way I I figured a more defensive stance was needed and made a forge while sending a peon to a nearby expansion just north of me.
Two dts were dispatched to the arcknight to wreck havoc, followed quickly by two more dts. Unfortunately, these players weren't fools and practice had given arc an overlord. (DOH!!) In the retreat I lost both dts but still had the other two close behind, ordering them to retreat. Back at home two more dts were made just in time to halt the advance of a few zeals on my meager two cannon defense. Knowing all too well the position I was in, as both players were still going strong and mine had just floated off to anotehr starting point near the north east corner, I knew high templar and storm were in order.
Mid game:
I had just started my expansion when a rather large force of hydras tried to break through. 4 dts quickly taught the zerg a lesson and I got by without losing any of my four cannons. Rallying the nexus of my main to the exp, it went up and running wiht two cannons for light defense when suddenly a small fleet of corsairs flew overhead, revealing the location of the near naked exp. I knew I was in trouble and immediately ordered my main defense of 4 dts and 4 goons to save it from an expected assault. About this time practice decided he'd play contain wiht lurkers, but my templar boys called down the thunder, somehow zapping the subterranean beasts into submission.
My forces arrived just in time. Arcknight, though commanding and extremely large force of dragoons, was forced to retreat with no detection. We played a game of chase the goon for a while when suddenly they turned and open fire on me!!! He obviously had an observer, but during this time I was pumping out goons like crazy and with reinforcements drove off the opposition. also, I built another forge to speed up upgrades and two gateways at my expansion. Soon two high templar, fresh from their rest on shakuras, joined the fray, and I was pumping goons from two bases.
Before long I noticed on my map a big blob of what turned out to be goons outside my main, and i quickly ordered my troops into position, expecting a futile assault on my 4 cannons and goons. However, he made another, different tactical error by trying to go AROUND to hit my exp from the back side. My templar had a field day with the goons, weakening every one of them and killing a few wiht the help of two cannons in range. Back at my expansion hydralisks showed up at my front. They were pincering my exp!!!!
With the help of storm from the remaining templar there, (one of them got killed somehow) I distracted the goons hitting my peon line while destroying the hydras with my superior goon force. Finally my partner helped out a little and sent a marine squad to destroy most of the already heavily-damaged goons. (what can I say, storm owns ;D)
Late game:
Seeing as how a major assault from both players on my exp failed thanks to the omnipotent power of storm (man do I love that spell when it's not popping my infantry), I figured I'd take the thunder to their home court. Moving a force of 24 goons and two templar towards brown, who I thought was weaker, I intercepted a decent force of goons attempting to crush my defenseless newbie partner. Outnumbered and outupgraded, the goons didn't stand a chance, and I proceeded to head towards browns base when aabout 5 ultras hit me hard. I figured this would be easy but when I checked my screen, somehow my 2nd control group was nowhere to be found! By hitting 2 twice I saw they were somehow very far behind, so I had to make due with what I had till reinforcements arrived. A little storm here and there wittled the ultras down a bit. Soon, I was pleased to see that I hadn't lost a single goon to the now really gooey ultras.
The rampage continued towards his main where I met a few hydras and some sunkens. My partner then decided to help me and aided me with a vulture (woohoo), and thanks to the bravery of that soldier I was able to bust through his defenses and win the day =)! The zerg finally got smart and decided to target my templar (what an idea), but the remaining one stormed the foolish snot-shooters in payback.
The rest of practice was mop up, when I heard the good old, not to mention always poorly timed, "you are under attack!" I saw a swarm of scoutings hitting my second exp and laying the smack down on my probes. I quickly retreated them to my first exp, which had a lot of goons defending it. The scouts and corsairs then turned to my main, webbed teh cannons there, and began pounding my tech buildings. My goons simply would not have this, and many a scout fell before he retreated.
Arc then said "GG and well played white." Before I could say anything else he left, even though he still had all of his base untouched. Practice then basically stated that we either ally or he'd play a game of hide the fag and put extractors, hatcheries, or whatever all over the map. This 2v1 drained and I was too tired, so we all allied and my confidence was boosted. I just won with a newbie partner ;).
Lessons learned
1. Storm owns all. Without that spell I woulda lost big time to the swarms of goons arc sent at me. Dts are cool too, especially on the defensive, as they crushed a huge swarm of hydras and a decent force of zeals for me early on.
2. Never give up. In the end orange out harvested me, which meant he had a lot of resources left he could have beat me with. Instead he just left.
3. Scouts suck and goons suck alone. If he had gotten carriers he might have hurt me. By the same token, storms of his own, reavers, or da's to feedback or mc me would have gone a long way towards crushing me.
4. I never get pictures in my br's ;(. (Ok so that I knew already ;P)
5. Nothing like a 2v1 to boost your confidence ^_~.
I'm not sure if this was as interesting as my other two reports, but it was really intense for me stopping some of those attacks, especially that pincer attack on my exp. Well, hope you enjoyed.
