| Battle for the Lost Temple: Part 1 | | | Author: | | | IP: | nchobo05XXXX | | Date: | 03/01/03 09:03 | | Game Type: | Starcraft | | Labels: | none | | Report Rating: , # of Ratings: 1, Max: 7, Min: 7 Lifetime Rating for Holzhammer: 7.0000 | | The seemingly eternal coldness of the Cryo-cell slowly faded away. My eyes opened and I was looking at a white ceiling. A blue light slowly flashed on and off. Slowly I sat up and cracked my neck. I looked around. There were twelve Cryo-cells in the glass room and in each one people were waking up. I got up and stretched my muscles.
“Damn, it feels good to finally be able to stand up. You know, they can say whatever they want but you’re not really asleep when you’re in one of these things.”
Turning around I saw private Patrick Müller talking to the only female soldier in our squad, Sarah McCain. He always tried to impress her with his big muscles and big talk but the only thing it did was annoy her. I just smiled a bit when I saw the annoyed look on her face and walked to the showering room. Everyone slowly poured into the room and got a refreshing shower. We put on our normal outfit and went to the mess. Except for the cooks, nobody else was there. We got some food and started to eat.
“Ok, now explain again what we’re doing here.”, Müller said.
“I thought even you would know by now, seeing as how many times they told us.”, sergeant Shear said without looking up from his food.
“As you know, Arcturus Mengsk has reformed his Sons of Korhal and he’s stronger than ever. Jim Raynor stood up against him and formed Raynor’s Resistance, us. The war between Mengsk’s troops and ours has been waging for many months now. When a scouting party was looking for a planet on which we could hide ourselves in times of need, they discovered a strange form of energy on this planet that was being emitted from this region. Some egghead scientists were send to research it and apparently it’s originating from an old Xel’Naga temple that is somehow still active. Of course Raynor wants to use the energies of the temple as a decisive factor in the war against Mengsk. We’re here to set up a base and defend the temple.”
“Oh yeah...”, Müller simply said and everyone on the table couldn’t help but smile or let out a short laugh.
Everyone was done eating except for the sergeant, or Sarge as we called him. We waited for him to finish, chatting about our mission.
“What if the temple is dug up? I mean, those Xel’Naga made the Zerg and Protoss! Whatever there’s in the temple, it will be huge.”
“Zerg and Protoss... I hope they’re here as well. I never seen one alive but man... I so want to kick their asses!”
“Are you crazy, Stan?! I’ve seen them and I fought them, well the Zerg. You don’t want to fight them, believe me. They got huge claws and teeth, they shoot needles from a shield around their neck and there are huge monsters with them that are bigger than our Arclite tanks.”
“Dave is exaggerating again guys...”
“I am NOT exaggerating. That one time...”
A hard slam from Sarge’s cup on the table shut everyone up. He had finished his meal. He looked on his watch and took a piece of gum to chew on. We all just looked at him.
“If all you girls can calm down... There are no Zerg, Protoss, faeries or Greenpeace pussies on this planet. It’s been thoroughly scanned by scouts and there’s only some local fauna here. Besides, this planet is so remote nobody will ever find it. Probably that’s why the temple was built here, nobody will look here. But that’s nothing we should worry about. We’re just here to set up a base and defend the temple.”
“Defend it from what?”, Stan asked.
“Well, our official mission is to defend the temple. What we’re actually going to do is drink beer, play poker and enjoy some peace.”
The rest of the squad responded with “yeah!”s or similar things. He looked at his watch again, something he always seems to have to do.
“Colonel Hart, the man who leads this expedition expects me in his office. I suggest you people put on your gear and get your asses outside to look where this Command Centre landed.”
He got up and so did we. After putting our empty plates away, Sarge walked towards Hart’s office while we went to put on our army gear: big Titanium suits called Powered Combat Suits that makes us look like we’re 7 feet tall. It was standard equipment but still it had everything you needed: full life-support, NBC shielding and in-field chemical delivery systems. We kept the helmets open so we didn’t have to look through the filtered infrared or ultraviolet screen of the suits.
Müller closed his helmet for a second and looked up and down McCain.
“My heat scanner indicated you’re hot as always, McCain.”
She opened his helmet. “Get a life, Müller... or a dog.”
I shook my head smilingly because I knew Patrick would never give up. We walked to the armament room. No special weapons there, no Stim packs, no U-238 shells. Only your standard C-14 Impaler Gauss rifles. Not that we needed anything else because nobody expected to find someone else on that planet except for some Bengalaas, monkeys or other local fauna.
When everyone was equipped we went to the outside. I looked around saw that we the Command Centre landed on a large plateau. The edges could be seen in the distance. Some SCVs, or Space Construction Vehicles, were mining the blue crystals for minerals. The more we had, the more buildings we could make and the more troops we could maintain. The strange crystals contained everything: metal, minerals, water... But still no base could grow from only that. A supply line was set up between our home planet of Mar Sara and this planet. If we should need it then a whole army could be brought here in just 48 hours. Above the Command Centre there was a Vespene geyser that continually released green gas. The Vespene gas was needed to fuel our vehicles, airplanes and to supply us from power.
We started to scout the plateau. It was wide at the basis but as we went to the north it suddenly got smaller. There was a natural way down the plateau in the north. According to scientists this plateau used to be the beginning of a river and the water ran down where the entrance now was, making a smooth way down. Below the plateau and a bit to the north of it we could see another batch of crystals and a Vespene geyser. Should we need it, we could expand there.
I went back and saw that an SCV was building a Supply Depot right above the group of crystals. We would need it to store building materials, food, gasoline and other things that were stashed away in the Command Centre for now. Sarge suddenly walked out.
“Squad, gather at the HQ entrance.”, he said through the intercom. I ran at the entrance of the building and waited for everyone to arrive.
“Alright men. Colonel Hart has ordered us to scout the immediate environment. As we speak, your helmet vision is being upgraded so you can look at a minimap of the area where will be operating. Every rock, tree or piece of grass you find will be shown on the minimap so you won’t get lost. We will split up in groups of three. One group will stay here to guard it from any curious Bengalaas or group of monkeys. The other groups will scout the north, east and west. Now let’s get moving!”
We immediately made groups of three. Sarge’s group went north, Patrick’s group went east and my group scouted the south.
Mario, Dave and me descended the plateau and walked past the expansion below. We walked along the edges of the plateau and spotted another group of crystals in the distance. I guess this planet was full of those things. We passed some trees and some beautiful birds quickly flew up from them as we passed. They probably never saw humans before.
After some time we saw yet another group of crystals in the south. To the east we could see some water. We went further south and saw even more crystals and a Vespene geyser to the south of it. To the west there was a plateau, and a way up. It was about the same like our entrance and it was probably created in the same manner.
We went up and we smelled something weird. I don’t know what it was but I almost had to throw up from it. In the distance we could see some weird things reaching high in the air. Carefully we went closer to see what it was. Images of me in military school flashed before me. It looked like things they showed us there. All those images and what I saw before me all pointed at one word: Zerg!
There were three “buildings”. Well, they looked like buildings but they were pulsating. Like if they were breathing. The ground was covered with thick, purple slime. How’s it called? Oh yes, creep. A large building, probably the command centre, was used as a drop-off point for the crystals that were mined by weird-looking creatures, the Drones. Another building was placed right under the Vespene geyser. It was round and filled thin green slime. The smell of it was unbelievable, even worse than a rotten corpse. The third building was created right before our eyes. A Drone scattered towards the Vespene geyser, sat on it and it looked like it melted. A light brown slime covered the geyser and it started to pulsate, growing bigger and bigger. A disgusting sight.
“Valeo!”, Dave yelled and I looked. A few bug-like creatures were running at us from the command centre. Strange, I haven’t noticed them before. Although there were some large worms crawling around it. We opened fire at the creatures and concentrated on the same one, like we were taught. They fell down quite easily but there were at least ten. That was just too much for us three. We ran backwards towards the way down while shooting at the bugs, the Zerglings. Suddenly the intercom crackled.
“Sarge to base, Sarge to base. We found humans in the north and we’re under attack. We’re coming back to the base right now, I suggest you put up defences right away!”
Shit! Even more problems. We ran away from the plateau but I heard a scream behind me. I kept running but turned to see what was happening. Mario fell down and a rock rolled down with him. He probably tripped over him. Three Zerglings jumped from the top of the plateau on him and started to tear him apart. Dave ran at him to help but I pulled him back.
“Let’s go you idiot! We can’t help him anymore. They’ll just kill us as well.”
Mario’s screaming came through an abrupt end as a Zergling ripped his head off. I pulled Dave with me and we ran to our base. The bugs stopped their chase and went back to their slimy base.
“Valeo to base, Valeo to base. We got even more troubles. There’s Zerg here and they killed Mario. We’re returning to base right now.”
People were yelling over the intercom about the Zerg and the other human base. I switched the intercom off. We kept running towards our base and finally we got there. Sarge greeted us and we saluted him.
“Sarge, what’s going on here?”
“No time to explain but things can’t go worse. We got humans in the north, Zerg in the south and... Protoss in the east. Müller just came back, alone and wounded. He said that large weird warrior with some kind of energy blades killed the persons that were with him. He managed to get away. No doubt about it, they are Zealots, Protoss.”
I was shocked. Humans, Zerg and Protoss. Could things be any worse?
“Colonel Hart is already reporting to Raynor. An army will probably be send asap to clear this region out. But right now, everyone stays here at the entrance and report anything suspicious immediately. I’m going to see how things are with Hart.”
Sarge turned around and walked to the Command Centre. I saw that another Supply Depot was set up already. A Barracks was being constructed only a few meters away from me and a Refinery just came online on the Vespene Geyser.
The dice has been thrown and the battle is near...
