Game: Vanilla StarCraft
Map: Meltdown
Contestants:
Colonel.Cease (random) Terran
Thunder~Bunny (random) Protoss
Start Locations:
Colonel.Cease landed his command
center in the top starting location.
Thunder~Bunny had his nexus warp
in at the bottom left start location.
As soon as the game commences both players start what seem to be standard
build orders. Colonel.Cease opting for
the barracks on 7 and supply depot on 8, while Thunder~Bunny
goes for a pylon on 7 followed by a gateway on 8. This however is
where their build orders diverge from those regularly expected.
Part One: A story of odd bases.
Colonel.Cease heads straight for early
gas, creating his refinery directly after his first depot. Things
are complicated more by poor depot placement, forcing him to place 5 scvs
on gas. Once he has a steady gas flow he puts up 3 factories and
starts researching siege.
Thunder~Bunny has not been idle in this
crucial part of the game either. At first his build looks like a
standard zealot rush with an additional pylon and a gateway coming up.
He must have waited too long before building because he already has a few
zealots out by this time. After this he makes an odd move of building
a cybernetics core but not an assimilator.
It is at this time that both players send out
a worker as scouts. After finding each others bases on the first
try, they circle their workers to the back of the bases. This is
where the awkward early game ends and the mid game begins.
Part 2: The slowest cannon push I have ever seen.
With both of their workers safely hidden both
players attempt to build behind their opponents base. Colonel.Cease’s
barracks is built to near to his enemys base and is unfortunately destroyed
by some happy little zealots.
Thunder~Bunny’s attempt goes much better.
After his pylon finishes warping in Thunder~Bunny
warps in a forge at his main and places one shield batter above Colonel.Cease’
s base and starts to cannon push. At the same time he finally realizes
he has no gas and finally warps in an assimilator.
It is soon apparent however that Thunder~Bunny
waited to long as Colonel.Cease’s first tank
rolls of the line and start blasting away at the ominous cannons.
Not willing to have his poorly executed attack
fail miserably, Thunder~Bunny attacks with
all of his units that have been pouring out of his mere 2 gateways.
His attack manages to take out all of Colonel.Cease’s
defenders but is thwarted by units that pop out just in time to save the
day.
Hoping that Colonel.Cease’s tanks
had magically disappeared Thunder~Bunny tries
once again to cannon push. We do not however live in a perfect world
and the push is crushed yet the foolhardy terran
commander decides not to move his tank forward and allows the Protoss
outpost to remain alive.
Frustrated at his cannon push being turned back he decides to once again
attack but his attack barely hurts the Terran
outpost because of the newly placed spidermines and their hippy counterparts.
During the confusion Thunder~Bunny finally
finds the time to expand.
At this point I thought Thunder~Bunny was
done for with his defense coming to a grand total of 3 cannons at an expansion
but the attack never came and Thunder~Bunny
was soon at it again.
Part 3: Death by resources.
Colonel.Cease, seeing that it is
time to move on, techs to wraiths and decides now might be a good time
to expand.
Mere moments after his SCV leaves the base Thunder~Bunny's
first reaver rolls off the line and he proceeds to reaver drop Colonel.Cease’s
main. However He learns the sad fact that many Protoss commander
know, tanks can blow up reavers.
Just as it looks like every ones favorite Terran is about to get back
in the game a hapless probe stumbles upon Colonel.Cease’s
expansion and it is quickly ravaged by zealots and dragoons. However
the command center is not destroyed and soon flies back to resume mining
after opposition has left.
It just isn’t a good spot for expansions as Thunder~Bunny,
being the astute rabit he is, reaver drops the expansion. Thankfully
wraiths fly in and save the day.
Feeling cocky Colonel.Cease decides that
he should expand again. Thunder~Bunny
also decides to expand and decides that now might be a good time to get
an observatory.
Part 4: The lucky march.
Angered at the loss of their robotic friends and army of hopping mad
Protoss march towards Colonel.Cease’s expansion.
Due to his poor choosing of his second expansion site, it is sited
as the army walks right by it giving away it’s location. After decimating
the first expansion the army heads back over to the second expansion and
Colonel.Cease admits defeat.
The stats look like this after the dust has settled.
Thunder~Bunny
30585, 6575, 23286, 60446
Colonel.Cease
31160, 6375, 19648, 57183
Lessons to be learned:
- Always counter attack. Even a half-assed on would have
won this game.
- Watch you building placement.
- Tanks do not disappear over time.
- Even decent players can have horrible games every once
and a while.
