Greetings to those people who have chosen to read this BR. It is rather different to the majority of BR’s out there and I never would have thought of doing one like this if it weren’t for some other BR writers whose success is high. The reasons for all this are:

A) This game is single player, thus is spread over more then one BR.
B) The game isn’t an RTS; it is a 2D Space Sim/RPG.
C) The game is a Mac game (originally).

Also while reading this report note that the pics are amateur work so please forgive my lack of skill. Also most pics are taken after the battle as I have an extremely hard time taking screens during a life or death battle.

Now to announce the title of the game…

I’ve been playing Escape Velocity: NOVA (EV: N) since it first came out but have never updated the game. Though I have played this game many, many times before I will go through it as more of a beginner for your (the readers) sake.

I started of course by creating a new character. I have opted to create a character that uses naught but guns and turrets, no missiles whatsoever. While thinking up a name for my new person, my gaze wandered over my Warhammer: 40,000 miniature collection…

I have a number of plug-ins (mods for you PC Gamers). One of these is Plug-Pack 1.05. It adds new items and start-up possibilities. I’m choosing to play Federation, as I want to play Rebel later on (alas, the Rebel). I gave my ship a fitting name (Kharn the Betrayer is a blood-crazed lunatic) and fired into the actual game. I couldn’t get the initial story sequence but I think you get it here, along with a ton of other stuff about EV: N.

I had a good start thanks to the Plug-Pack. I had a strong ship (a Patrol Boat is a Tier 2 Federation Vessel) and a tidy sum of money, yet I wanted more! I was asked by a Starbridge (decent civilian ship) to give him some fuel for 2 grand. I, of course, accepted. I then landed on the planet nearby and bought a solar panel (recharge fuel), 2 battery packs (extra fuel), an auto-refueller (if you can’t figure out what that does, give me your address and phone No. so I can fly over there and beat the $#!^ out of you!), an IFF Decoder (tells you whether a ship is friendly or hostile) and a Gravimetric Detector (tells you whether a ship is small or large). I also sold my raven rockets and their pods that I started with.

Having done my start-up shopping I went to the place where it all happened; Sol system! Upon warping in I noticed two things:

1. There were a lot of Fed ships around.
2. There was a Derelict vessel.

Now No. 1 is standard for the birthplace of the human race (pardon the rhyme) but No. 2 could mean one of three things:

1. A trap that causes some (3?) pirate vessels to warp in and attack you.
2. A $75,000 mission in which you take the survivors to a planet.
3. A disabled vessel. Funny thing is that it’s still got the normal % of taking over the ship. If there were crew left to resist you wouldn’t it be option 2?

I flew over to the derelict leviathan and docked with it. I got No. 2 and set course for Gem in the Fomalhaut system. First I noticed that there were blaster-fire sounds among others and rushed to a disabled ship that had been sent flying by the swirling melee. It was a Rebel Viper ripe for capture. I boarded it and stole it from its (now dead) owner.

After selling the Viper for 12 grand I warped twice and ended up in the Fomalhaut system. I landed on the planet Gem and received a mission that requires you to ferry 15 tons of “Rock Group” & “Rock Instruments” to 1st Cornwall in the South Manchester system & then to Galvan in the Syracuse system. You receive 100 grand in total and you only have to beat off a few measly Marauders (novice pirates).

Yes

(Sorry about the horrendous quality of above screenshot(s))

I set course for the South Manchester system. While passing through the Kerella system I saw a massive battle between the Aurorans and the Federation. This took place between 2 Auroran Carriers, their Firebirds (flying trash), 3 Patrol Boats and a Destroyer.

I managed to catch this screen while I was gliding past off-screen on the pic. The fusion and rail on the screen were being fired at a destroyer and I was on the left.
Anyway, when I was in the South Manchester system I caught a glimpse of a Krypt Pod. Here, take a look:

After sightseeing I landed on Cornwall and received my 50 grand. I also bought two more Solar panels and two Light Blaster Turrets. I was now ready to pulverize those pesky marauders!

I lifted off with my trigger-finger ready. As soon as the Marauders warped in I flew over to them and killed all the fighters for loss of about 30% shields. I then had an attack of “Evil Mac OS X”. As a terrapin flew to attack me the computer went to the screensaver. I quickly stopped this and went back to the game. I killed the Terrapin but failed to get any shots. I was on 80% armour thanks to the damned OS! I warped to the Sol system and picked up the Sigma mission (this version only has one mission to get all the stuff).

Yes

I then set a course for the Sanddown system and picked up the equipment. I flew back and I was done.

Sorry about cutting off the bottom but it was just a line more. Anyway I flew to Tichel and being generous I decided to get a screenshot of an open hypergate and explain it all to you.

Hypergates are a fast way of travel through the universe. They are spread throughout the Vell-os remnant section, the Auroran Empire and of course the Fed and Rebel sections.

After hypergating to Kania I bought myself a TraderBank Account. This little beauty costs 60 grand but gives you 800 credits a day. After spending some moolah I landed on Galvan in the Syracuse system.

I forgot to take a screen but it all goes like this:
The bands are actually robots save for Styles (the manager). The Feds take him away for all this and you end with the line:
“If this is show business then it’s not worth it,” or something like that.

After taking off I see two hostile rebel vipers so I engage them. 1 is obliterated and the other disabled. I capture that one.

I jump into the next system and see a derelict. Unfortunately a Pirate Starbridge beats me to it. I send him flying from the explosion of the Derelict. I quickly pursue and disable him. I steal his 35 grand but fail to capture the ship. Oh well!

Soon after I move back towards the planet a Class V Rebel Valkyrie & a Heavily Modded Pirate Enterprise warp in and turn hostile on me. I’m chased out of the system by rail, fusion and blaster fire.

In the Kania system I encounter a derelict with some crew. They ask me to take them to Thraine in the Gefjon system. I hope that there are few pirates as I warp into that dangerous system. An innocent Starbridge serves as a fantastic pincushion for fire allowing me to safely land. Getting off is the hard part!

Upon taking off, a thunderhead, two enterprises, an argosy, a starbridge and three vipers engage me (all highest upgrade save the Class B Starbridge). I act fast zipping in and destroying the three vipers and disabling the thunderhead. I almost disable the argosy before losing my shields. I realise the odds and, shaking off my shiplust, flee.

Well that’s all folks!

Well tell me what it’s like and depending on the comments I might or might not continue.

I’d like to thank EldritchEvil for inspiring me to actually to a BR, let alone a SP BR.

I’d like to thank Evula for creating the Survival Guide.

I’d like to thank Ambrosia for continuing to support Mac gaming (Woo!)

I’d like to thank the Australian (I’m an Aussie) ATMOS for creating the game in the first place!

Until next time, RexRox!

P.S. Sorry about the length.
