In my opinion, people will be able
to identify better with this report if they know a little about me, the person
behind the computer. My name is Chris,
and I am 19 years old. I live in Kansas City, Missouri,
and go to a small liberal arts college called Truman
State University,
found northeast of here, in a small town of 17,000 people, called Kirksville. I am an English major, about to begin my
sophomore year of school. At this point,
I have no job, no girlfriend, and about 24 hours a day of free time. So I decided to start up Brood War again,
after a rather lengthy fling with World of Warcraft. I decided I would become a professional at
the game, and spend the rest of my life in luxury, surrounded by gorgeous Asian
groupies and making cash money. After
the installation, I began to play.
I spent my first four games getting
pummeled in every which way. I felt like
every orifice on my tender body had been violated my Zerglings, Zealots,
Mutalisks, and so on. At this point, I
was 0-4.
I reminded myself that Rome was not built in a
day, and my professional skills were not going to come to me so quickly. At this point, I realized that I had a
goldmine on my hands: A series that
would detail my path to becoming a pro! And
this, Battlereports.com readers, is my 5th game since coming back to
Brood War. Enjoy.
I innocently made a game, and in
came Hiten(. He tried to bargain with
me, probably smelling the intense beating he would receive from someone like
me, someone who was desperate for a win, and full of spirit and moxie. My superior argument skills eventually won
out.

The game started, and I found
myself at the 9 o’clock position, while Hiten( found himself at the 3 o’clock. He seemed to be suspicious. Perhaps my username was and room name smelled
of professionalism.

Hiten kept talking, and began to
lie to me much like the women I meet do.

Ah ha! Caught in his own lie.

Back to the game. Hiten began a supply depot on 7/10, while I
held steady at 9/9. An overlord soon
hatched. At 10/18, a barracks goes under
construction. Hiten seems to be walling
off his choke point, a common strategy on LT.
On 12/25, I began a hatchery,
putting me at 11/25. Hiten’s constant
babbling distracted me, so I found myself to be a little behind schedule. Eventually, I told him to shut the fuck
up. He didn’t comply, so I simply
ignored him. 12/25 again, I began a
spawning pool.
About this time, the barracks had
completed, and a marine found himself being whipped into shape for a short life
on the lonely terrain of the Lost
Temple. 14/26, Hiten had Refinery in the
makings. After the refinery completes, he
slaps down two factories. I began a
hatchery at my expansion. I also started
a Hydralisk Den, because I like Hydraslisks.
At this point, I scouted him out
and found the walled off choke. My drone
went down in a hailstorm of bullets and sweat.
He had served me well, and thus, the circle of life was complete. Poetic, no?

Hiten began producing Vultures and
researching mines. He sealed off his
chokepoint with these mines, fortifying his position.
At this point, it’s a little over 5
minutes in and here is how the map looks.

I owned more property, which I
intended to sell later for a profit, allowing me to move to Bermuda
and begin a new life with my trophy wife.
Our armies at this point:

vs.

I started a lair, and planned on
getting upgraded Overlord speed and carrying capabilities.
With Vultures would come tanks, and with tanks would come the
molestation of my property from afar. Having my expansion tanked
to hell from a cliff was not what I wanted.
When the speed completed, I sent
out a scout Overlord. I found nothing at
his expansion, so I headed up and around, and checked his main. There, I found my savior.

Completely
unguarded minerals! Finding this made me
feel like I was a frat boy at a party who had just found a drunk girl that came
alone.
Knowing what I had to do, I jumped into action. The Lurker ability was being researched. After it finished, I promptly made two
Lurkers, loaded them up, and headed over to his minerals.
I dropped them, and the carnage began.

Hiten was less than pleased, especially after my gloating.

In response, he began a new command center at his
expansion. Unfortunately for him, the
best defense he had against my lurkers was building some Turrets as close as he
could get. My Lurkers would have none of
this.

I began the next daring move: dropping some Hydralisks in the
area that my Lurkers recently renovated.
I felt that with the Command
Center gone, it could no
longer disrupt the feng shui of the area.
Sadly, my troops
were baited into the tanks that sat at the choke point, and they lost their
lives. God bless, little guys.
I began assembling
my (hopefully) final blow. An Overlord
scout showed the expansion, so I begin two more Lurkers. At this point, I had enough of an advantage
that I could head out to begin more colonies.
I send two drones to the 6 o’clock position, one at the main, one at the
expansion. The Lurkers finished and
hopped inside the Overlord, ready to tear him apart.

Seeing the
destruction of his mineral line, and the lamentations of the surviving SCVs,
Hiten uttered a final “OMG” and left, giving me my first win!
I graciously
accepted the victory. Wiping the sweat
from my brow, I sighed. It had been
quite the game. I still had a lot of
work ahead of me, but this had put me one step closer.
