Mar Sara Colony, 2414
Chapter One: Infestation

Bright lights shone on the dark sand dunes of Mar Sara, challenged only by the dim light cast by the planet's moons. The dune buggy hopped lightly over the planet's desert-like surface, ignoring the occasional bumps of gravel that tore at its heavily reinforced tires. At 1800 hours in the Mar Sara desert, it was already completely dark. Two of Mar Sara's three moons had already appeared, shining a gray, eerie light upon the fast moving vehicle.
"How come you always pick the radio station!" Robert snapped. A private in the Mar Sara Marine Corps, Robert had the attitude and arrogance of a cadet just out of the Terran academy.
"Because I outrank you, soldier," a tough looking man in his mid forties replied.
"Aww Sarge! I never-"
The buggy was suddenly rocked by an impact, a dark shadow cracking the glass of the windshield. Although reinforced steel, the buggy was rocked and almost flipped over. Robert reflexively covered his face.
"What the heck…" Sarge said, "better have a look. Rob, stay in the buggy. This won't take long."
"Do you need your gauss rifle?"
"Nah. Probably nothing but a rhinox. Don't worry about it."
Sarge stepped away from the dune buggy, cautiously approaching the downed animal.
"Jesus it's a Zergling!" Serge said, turning around. "I thought I told you to stay in the buggy, damnit!" The Zergling, the size of a big dog, lay sprawled across the sand like a deflated balloon. Its sharp tusks protruded out of its mouth, its weapon of choice. Zerglings attack by ramming its victim with its sharp tusks, attacking with no concern for its own safety, driven by an eternal bloodlust that it carries by its side like a shadow. Three or four hits from a zergling and even the toughest marine armor will be eaten through.
"A Zergling? I though they never go out farther than the wastelands."
"They shouldn't. We better get back in the buggy and report this to the Commander Raynor. Zerglings never travel alone, so we had better get back to the buggy before…"
The light went out. Or something was blocking it. Sarge and Bob turned around quickly. Standing there, watching them like a predator plays with its prey, were a Hydralisk and three Zerglings. Hydralisks were a step up in the Zerg dominance chain, a good deal smarter and larger than zerglings. Little is known about them, but the few bodies that were found after Hydralisk attacks were mutilated beyond belief.
"Oh shit…" Sarge yelled.
Robert hauled out his gauss rifle just as the Zergs charged. The Zergling to his right was bombarded with a hail of concentrated gauss shells, ripping through its protective carpace and shredding its insides. The Zergling was decapitated in an explosion of blood and brown organs. Robert raised the rifle toward the hydralisk, but his hand was immediately impaled with a hail of tiny, razor sharp spikes. Robert's hands were mutilated, several of his fingers torn off. Robert began to scream, dropping the rifle. His hands were filled with bloody holes down to the wrist, the spikes penetrating down all the way to the bone.
"Bob! Toss me the gun!" Sarge yelled.
Robert continued to scream.
"Damnit!" Sarge dove for the rifle, and pointed it at the zergling. His hand was promptly lopped off by one of the Zergling's razor sharp tusks. The zergling lowered its head for the final blow, and Sarge opened his mouth to scream.

"Channel open. Goliath Epsilon-4 requesting coordinates of last seen whereabouts of dune buggy, control tower," A metallic voice calmly stated. All-purpose attack vehicles, Goliaths were huge humanoid resembling walkers, armed with twin auto-cannons and a wide variety of missiles.
"Roger Epsilon-4, sending coordinates now."
"Received, control tower. Heading out." A Goliath usually had a support squad of five marines and an assault bike, or vulture, but on reconnaissance missions the fast, armored Goliath walkers didn't want to be slowed by mobile infantry.
"ETA approximately seven minutes control tower. Epsilon-4 out."
Terran command headquarters in Mar Sara colony was established almost a century ago, but the command center and barracks look good as new. Squads of marines practiced on the shooting ranges while technicians put the finishing touches on the newly build Goliaths and Vultures. The war room bristled with activity. Ever since the growing Zerg presence was discovered, more and more soldiers were needed to defend the civilians against Zerg attacks.
"Commander Raynor!" a shrill voice called.
"Yes, Luanne. I know about the lost buggy," Jim Raynor said.
"We sent a Goliath to check it out, it should be getting there any minute now,"
"Good. Give me a full status report."
"Commander Raynor!"
"What is it now?" Jim said.
A lean man wearing a lab coat and eyepiece approached him, waving a tan-colored folder in his hands.
"We just completed the schematics of a new CMC-400 Combat suit, a vast improvement over the 300. It gives the marine an extra seven percent armor all the while sacrificing nothing in the weight department. If you follow me to the Academy I'll show you the design of the new spider mine tracking-"
"By the way, what's your name, scientist?"
"Ahhh, Mobius, Antwain Mobius."
"I'm a little busy right now, Antwain. Hows about you just go test those spider mines near the mineral deposits south of here? I here they have extra Zerg activity there, ok?"
"Yes sir, commander," Antwain said, leaving the war room.
"Sir! We have report from Epsilon-4 coming in on visual."
"On screen," Raynor commanded.
"Epsilon-4 reporting. Dune buggy destroyed, three bodies, none living. Sergeant Drayson, an unknown private, and a Zergling, sir. Request orders."
"Bring the bodies back-,"Raynor began.
"Alert. Approximately fifteen to eighteen unidentified alien life forms approaching. Epsilon-4 en route to engage," the computerized voice said, icy calm.
"Acknowledged, Epsilon-4. Radio the Tantiss Starport, order an immeadiate Wrathim air strike."
"Sir is that necessary? We could just send a Vulture and a Marine Squad, do we really have to waste precious-"
"Send a Vulture and a Marine squad then. The Wrathims won't get there for at least thirty minutes, because Tantiss is a good deal farther away than we are. Give Epsilon-4 some back up. Go!"
A squad of fifteen marines marched out, flanked by a Vulture attack bike. The newly polished gauss rifles glistened in the morning sunlight, along with the marines' armor.
"What's the name of the squad we sent out?" Raynor asked.
"Um…Omega-3, originally stationed at-" the com officer replied.
"Omega-3, eh? Experience?"
"Three years of Academy training, but only one real combat skirmish."
"They're about to get some more experience now," Raynor said.

The marines charged across the golden sand dunes, their faces completely covered in the black glass of their facemasks, blocking out all the poisonous air, insects, and for now, the sand that the Vulture kicks up in front of them. They could almost make out the outline of the Goliath Epsilon-4 in the distance. Only it wasn't upright.
"Goliath down!" the lieutenant barked, "defensive formation!"
"What the hell is that?" a private yelled.
In the distance, a large, bloated blimp like object drifted toward them. It had large crab like claws, and long, vine like tentacles hung down from its stomach.
"Zerg Overlord, they use them to-" the lieutenant said.
As he finished the line, Zerglings appeared atop a western sand dune, and seeing the marines, charged with animal like ferocity, followed by four larger hydralisks.
"Open fire!"
Before the lieutenant could yank out his own gauss rifle, the Vulture had taken out half the zerglings with two plasma grenades. The Vulture wheeled to face the rest of them, but was rammed and fell over, the rider tumbling on the sand. Immeadiatly six or seven zerglings tore at him, reducing him to a mass of bloody, pulpy flesh, and some of his stomach insides could be seen, staining the zergling tusks yellow. The Zerglings gave a unified scream, and charged, but the marines were quicker. The zerglings didn't even reach the first private before they were bombarded by a hail of metal spikes, and quickly were taken down. "That it?"
"Where are the Hydras?" the lieutenant asked.
Suddenly, the ground beneath them shook. A Hydralisk popped up from the ground.
"Oh, lord."
The Hydra took out one marine, and then was killed. More hydras appeared, and more, until nearly forty Hydralisks had risen from the sand, attacking with razor sharp spines.
"Behind you! Lewis!" a private said.
A marine, shooting a hydra at point blank range, was decapitated from behind by three others. Another marine had a hole the size of a football torn in his stomach from the concentrated hydra spines.
"They are headed toward Mar Sara!" the lieutenant said, "we must warn the base before-" the lieutenant never finished his statement.
Marines died everywhere. Limbs lay scattered, and blood stained the sand of Mar Sara. The forty or so Hydralisks continued toward Mar Sara colony, undisturbed by the carnage around them. More Hydralisks and the flying Mutalisks as well, until the Zerg force numbered nearly 400. They advanced quickly on Mar Sara.
