Where It All Starts
I'm gonna start playing on ladder again, I have to! Unfortunately, I just happened to pick the perfect time to ladder, and nobody was in NH whasoever. So instead I create a public game, and someone actually joins (yay!). But of course, I had to make the map Temple or nobody would come. :o( The first thing he said to me was "no disc"...how nice. I love knowing that others have such faith in me. LOL, he must've assumed I was Korean cuz I was on under "l33t-h4x0r". Anyway, I simply replied that I'm not a lamer and began the game.
Let the Games Begin!
So I start off using a standard Depot on 8, Barrack, Barrack, 3 Depot, Academy, Refinery build (I wanna be just like Heartcutter when I grow up!). I send my 9th SCV out scouting. His name is Chip. Not Deon. Off he goes to 3:00 as I begin Barrack #1, closely followed by Barrack #2. SCV's pop out of the Glowing Command Center at a rapid pace and I begin construction of Depot #2. Those tough-as-nails Marines are beginning to become a part of my base as well.
Chip hovers on his little SCV-rocket pack to 3:00 only to find grass and dirt, with a few miscellaneous resources. Although this looks like a fertile ground for expansion, this is not Chip's main objective, so I twist his puppet strings and send him south to 6:00. Back at home things are rosy. Depots 3 and 4 are coming online, and Marines and SCV's are pouring out of their training structures. Soon, an Academy and Refinery are going up. All is well.
Chip glides into the 6:00 start location. Deja vu! he thinks as this spot is very similar to 3:00 - empty. OK Chip, I tell him, we know where the Protoss is. I need you to run a scouting mission into that base and report back to us what you find. It might be dangerous, it's true, and you may very well lose your life. But that doesn't matter. Know why? Because I AM YOUR GOD! I CAN KILL YOU WITH A MERE CLICK!!! BWAHAHAHAHA, YOU HAVE TO DO WHATEVER I SAY!
OK, whoops. My family is staring at me now. Oh well. Chip heads off to 9:00, boldly...he knows I might let him live if he follows my orders. More Marines, more Marines, a few more SCV's. Everything is going exactly as planned. Yay!
Chip cautiously zooms into the Protoss encampment, to see what he can see. He is immediately targetted by an unfriendly Dragoon and Cannon. He reports back, speaking very fast. Sir, sir, we have 3 Zealots, a Dragoon, 2 Cannons and - oh boy - a Citadel warping in! Sir! Detection! You need defense agains--...URRGH!! Chip is sent to the grave before he can finish his transmission. But I know what he meant to say. We had Dark Templar on the horizon, and we had to DO something about it.
I immediately started up an Engineering Bay and a couple Firebats, followed by a Bunker on my ramp with Marines filling the cracks (I also had a Depot and Barrack there). ComSat Station went online, and I scanned him moments later. More Goons, Zealots. 2 Gateways. A Bot Facility, and a Templar Archive - just warping in. SHIT!
Several SCV's are pulled from the line of duty to construct Turrets...2 at my choke, 2 by the CC, and 2 others placed throughout my structures. I also make it a point to begin a Factory ASAP - I suspect Reavers too, and well...what does a Terran do without Tanks there? I add a Bunker beside my SCV's to keep them nice and safe. As I see money building up like wildfire, I also begin upgrading Infantry Armor, queue up 2 more SCV's, 2 Firebats, 2 Marines. DT's? I'm ready bitches - come 'n' get it.
The Dark Ones Are Out to Get Me!
As I'm playing around with all the infantry at my choke, I suddenly hear a Missle Turret firing. I look immediately and see that lovable old Shuttle, undoubtably carrying a DT cargo. How sweet, I think, he's come to drop off a present. He decides against dropping the little bastards in my SCV's and instead plops them down in an obscure southern area of my base. I rally the rest of the Marines and head over to my Command Center.
My poor Marines are horrified as they see the air itself attacking their advanced training structure. I have no Turrets covering my Academy! No, I tell them, this is the work of the Protoss and their evil Jedi mind tricks. I scan there and send a DT straight to hell before they can all run off. A Turret is imeediately started up in that spot, but doesn't finish in time before the DT's begin hitting my Academy again. Scan once again, and I put the hurt on the 3 stealth assassins.
I won't stand for this BS anymore. I'm out for blood. The evil Dark Templar kill the SCV building the Turret and go back to the Academy. The little blue swirl appears and my small Marines stim up and send 2 more of the DT's back to Aiur. Grrr. His remaining DT comes back into view for 1 second, and that's all I need. U-238 Shells end his pathetic existence.
I am now quite happy. Things are going well. An SCV I had previously sent to 3:00 starts an expansion, and my first Tank pops out. I send another SCV to his base (for lack of scan) and see nothing short of a Robotics Support Bay. Good. Tanks can handle Reavers. Quite well too. As my ComSat reaches 50 energy again, I scan his natural. Nothing there. Has he expanded or what? Am I ahead of him?
Damn Those Creepy Crawlers
Starport goes up. By the looks of his main, he obviously wants to drop me. Wraiths will put an end to those damn Shuttles...you'll see! But before my Starport can finish, 2 Reavers land in my base, despite the fact that I intercepted the Shuttle with Marines. Boom. Boom. All but 3 Marines are dead, and they stim just so they can run away fast enough. My wildcard Tank (the one left unsieged so I can be flexible) sieges up and blasts the 2 Reavers, hurting them considerably but not enough to kill them when they go out of range...yet. The crawling automations from Hell advance on me and destroy my Academy before my repositioned Tank can destroy them.
And the Dust Settles...
At this point I had a Wraith and 2 ComSat Stations, so I did a little scouting. My Wraith went straight to the top-left island and promptly died to Cannon fire. Aw dammit. I scan all over the place - that's his only exp. Phew. I queue up a Dropship, noticing no Cannons by the wall of his island, when I see a lone Probe at my expansion. Aw damn. He knows I'm here. I send 4 Marines and a Tank there, and Bunkers and Turrets go up immediately. 2 Marines go in each Bunker, so I can sorta exaggerate my defense.
2 more Barracks and another Factory go up at home. I scan his main once again...hmm, few Goons, DT's, Zealots...and CARRIERS!!! That's right boys and girls, there are 2 Carriers floating happily over their little Stargates. Ohh shit again. Science Faciliy goes up, as well as an Armory for Goliaths. What we need is Lockdown. And plenty of it.
But the peace is broken again as I scan his natural. There is a full control group of Goons headed out of his base, and I just know they want my exp on their belts. I send 4 more Marines and another Tank to my exp, wishing luck and hoping it'll hold. But as it turns out, it doesn't. They destroy my Tanks and Bunkers with 4-5 Goons left and eventually my CC too, only 2 SCV's making it back home alive. No, this is not good. This is bad. I grab my Dropship and load it up with 2 SCV's, 2 Marines, and a Tank, and head to the lower right island planning for a new expansion. I will not be denied my proper resources!
More Marines. More Goliaths. More Wraiths. More GHOSTS! My money comes in and goes out in the same breath. I build another expansion at 6:00's natural, which is soon found and destroyed on sight a little after the CC is finished. Errgh. More Marines. More Goliaths. More Wraiths. More Ghosts...
When Aliens Attack
I was pretty sure I could handle whatever he could throw at me...except for those damn Carriers. I would need to rely on Lockdown and I knew it, and he must've known it too. He wiped the lower-east island clean of my presence with about 5 Carriers, with me having no Ghosts in the area at all. There goes my last expansion.
As I'm building things, I hear the Not Enough Minerals message. Uh-oh. My main is dry and I have no expansions and I just ran out of minerals building Goliaths. I cancel my Goliaths so I have 480 minerals again and begin a CC at my natural. My handful of Goliaths, Wraiths, Ghosts and Marines rallies to the center of my base and prepares for imminent doom from Carriers. I won't die without a fight!
I scan his natural. There's a Nexus warping in, surrounded by a mob of Probes. He's obviously low on resources too! But he has Carriers. :o( I look at my little SCV doing his best to begin another expansion for me, and I know it's already over. I cancel the CC and decide that my last hurrah will be destroying his natural from above. 2 Dropships load up 2 SCV's, 6 Marines, 4 Ghosts, and a Tank and head to his cliff.
He attacks. Like 7 Carriers over here, wasting me. I Lockdown 6 of them, but the 1 left is enough to kill my Marines as they hit the other Carriers...even though those brave Marines destroyed 3 Carriers in all, it won't be enough to save the day. So I advance with my original plan, and drop 2 SCV's on his natural's cliff.
Up go 2 Bunkers. This is fun. Job Finished! Job Finished! 3 Marines in each Bunker. Tank sieges up and down go the Probes. Down goes the Assimilator. I also get another 2 Tanks from my main for the sole purpose of destroying this expansion, even if I know I'm dead.Feeling confident somewhat, I unload my Bunkers and send my force to the lower ground and up his ramp, only to be killed off by some Goons (even though my little Ghosts fought well, locking down 3 Carriers and 5 Goons).
At the end I was rambling to him about how my Terran needs work, but he replied back that I'm a good Terran. This sorta shocked me. I have never been a decent Terran player, ever. That had to be the best Terran game I've played to date (and I still lost :o/). Anyway, I left the game in a more positive state, even though my ladder rating has now dropped 24 points. :o/
Lessons learned? What I learned is this: I need to work harder on macro and defending my expansions. And that's all I have to say. |
